Galaxy XII C-band (G5)

The Galaxy XII PanAmSat is somewhat different from the other providers listed here, because it's an actual satellite, the twelfth launched by the company PanAmSat to provide North American TV coverage (and the 22nd in PanAmSat's fleet). Official titled the Galaxy XII C-band (G5) satellite, this 1,790-kg machine includes a total of twenty-four 36-Mhz C-band transponders, and can cover the North American continent from 74 degrees west longitude to 133 degrees west longitude (which includes both Alaska and Hawaii). It was boosted into orbit in April 2003 by Arianespace in France, and was the first of three C-band satellites emplaced by PanAmSat over a period of 2.5 years. The Galaxy XII is expected to be in use until at least the year 2018. The satellite's primary purpose is to provide backup for cable and broadcast video customers, but it also offers capacity for news services, digital cable, and HDTV, on an as-needed basis.

At the moment, the Galaxy XII satellite provides regular capacity for just two networks that offer live soccer matches: ESPN and ESPN2. Their coverage, however, offers a great deal of variety from a soccer perspective. The satellite can be found at orbital slot 125 degrees west longitude.
