Match facts and other stats

  • Nigeria has won just one of its past 13 games at the World Cup (W1 D3 L9)
  • Their sole win during that run was against Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2014
  • Iceland are the smallest ever nation to qualify for a World Cup (with a population under 340.000)
  • The last debutant side to avoid defeat in its first two World Cup games was Senegal in 2002
  • In terms of European teams, Croatia, as debutants at the 1998 edition, also managed to avoid a loss

Preview

Both sides will be hoping to earn a vital win, albeit one team will be a lot more satisfied with their result from matchday one than the other.

Just like they did at their first ever tournament two years ago, Iceland are keen on making a huge splash at their debut World Cup. And so far, it's been working, as they held tournament favorites Argentina to an impressive 1-1 draw. More important, goalkeeper Hannes Halldórsson came up big to produce a great save against Lionel Messi from the spot, ensuring that Iceland were able to hang on for a point.

With Argentina shockingly losing 3-0 to a determined and hungry Croatian side, Iceland will come into this game knowing that they could jump into second place if they can see off Nigeria. Meanwhile, the Super Eagles were surprisingly poor against the Croatians, failing to have any impact as they slumped to a 2-0 loss. They'll obviously be keen on showing that was just a bad day at the office as they chase not just their first World Cup win, but to try to score a goal.

Iceland, obviously won't make it easy, as their ultra-defensive approach earned them a deserved draw against Argentina.
