De Cymru Premier (ook wel bekend als de Welsh Premier League) is de hoogste voetbalcompetitie voor mannen in Wales. Deze competitie werd in 1991 opgericht door de Football Association of Wales (FAW) en begon officieel te draaien in augustus 1992, bij aanvang van het seizoen 1992/93. Elk seizoen start doorgaans in augustus en loopt tot mei van het volgende jaar. Onder het huidige format is elk seizoen opgedeeld in twee fasen, met een play-off om te bepalen welk team zich ook kwalificeert voor de Europese competitie in het volgende seizoen.
Het eerste deel van het seizoen begint gewoonlijk in augustus en eindigt medio januari. Elk team speelt twee keer tegen elkaar, zowel thuis als uit. Zodra dit deel van het seizoen is afgerond, splitst de competitie zich op in twee secties. De teams met de meeste punten vormen de kampioenschapsgroep, terwijl de teams met de minste punten overgaan naar de play-off groep.
Het tweede deel van het seizoen begint doorgaans in het begin van februari en loopt tot eind april. Alle punten die tijdens het eerste deel van het seizoen zijn verzameld, worden meegenomen naar het tweede deel. In elke groep speelt elk team twee keer tegen elkaar, zowel thuis als uit, maar de teams spelen niet tegen teams uit de andere groep.
Het team dat aan het eind van het seizoen (inclusief deel één) de meeste punten behaalt in de kampioenschapsgroep, wordt tot competitiekampioen gekroond en krijgt de kans om deel te nemen aan de UEFA Champions League. De tweede plaats in de kampioenschapsgroep biedt een kans om deel te nemen aan de UEFA Europa Conference League, terwijl de andere overgebleven teams in de kampioenschapsgroep deelnemen aan een apart mini-toernooi om te bepalen welk team zich ook kan kwalificeren voor de Europese competitie (de Europese play-offs van de competitie).
De teams aan de onderkant van de play-off groep worden automatisch gedegradeerd, terwijl het team dat als beste uit de play-off groep komt, ook de kans krijgt om deel te nemen aan de play-offs van de Europese competitie.
Ten slotte wordt het seizoen afgesloten met de Europese competitie play-offs, waar verschillende teams zullen strijden om een ticket te verdienen voor de UEFA Europa Conference League.
Interessant is dat de Welsh Premier League geen volledig professionele competitie is, maar bestaat uit een mix van professionele en semi-professionele teams. Tot op heden is The New Saints een van de meest succesvolle teams in de geschiedenis van de Premier League, met meer gewonnen titels dan enig ander team.
Wat betreft de mediaberichtgeving had de Welsh Premier League geen specifieke omroep in Wales. In plaats daarvan verschenen wedstrijden op verschillende kanalen. S4C werd eind jaren negentig en begin 2000 de primaire tv-omroep van de WPL, tot commerciële omroep Setanta Sports de tv-uitzendrechten overnam in het laatste deel van de jaren 2000. Sinds het einde van de jaren 2010 zijn de niet-exclusieve uitzendrechten van de WPL echter teruggekeerd naar S4C. Hoewel niet alle wedstrijden op hun tv-kanalen worden uitgezonden, zet het netwerk zich in om alle wedstrijden live te streamen op zijn speciale Facebook-pagina.
