Arsenal’s coach Arsene Wenger has an eye for talent. Despite the recent problems in Arsenal, one cannot deny that Wenger can easily spot unknown players and groom them into fantastic ones. Borussia Dortmund’s Mario Goetze though is already a star. Wenger recently tabled a very high offer for him but had it rejected by the German champions.
Reports from German club Werder Bremen claim that veteran striker Claudio Pizarro is carrying a knee injury. The extent of the player’s recovery time remains unknown as of now. However, it has been confirmed that the Peruvian national team will be deprived from his services during July’s Copa America in Argentina.
Bremen’s Champions League adventure has been miserable this season. They languish at the bottom of Group A with only 2 points and a (-9) goal difference. Tonight’s match against Inter Milan will mark their last European game of the season and coach Thomas Schaaf, who is disgusted about Werder Bremen’s Champions League fate, revealed his ambitions while talking to reporters.
“The match [on Tuesday] is very important for us although we are out of the competition. Werder Bremen vs Inter Milan is a big game.
“We are very happy to play against the Champions League’s titleholders. For us, it represents a big challenge. Our aim isn’t only to compete against Inter Milan, but to win the match.
“I don’t know which players will start yet. All I know is that those who will play will do so with the ambition of winning,” Coach Benitez told the media as he talked about his debatable man-squad to face Werder Bremen.
“This game is important for us. It’s 10 out of 10 and that’s what every player who will enter the pitch will think.”
The fact that Rafael Benitez has rested these 3 key players doesn’t mean that the Inter Milan coach takes tonight’s match against Werder Bremen for granted. The Spaniard is under pressure to live up to expectations since Internazionale keep struggling following the departure of the charismatic Jose Mourinho.
Internazionale have already booked their place for the Last 16 of the competition. However, this doesn’t mean that there will be nothing to play for in Germany on Tuesday. The Champions League titleholders have something at stake in terms of the top spot in Group A.
Tottenham Hotspur have proven very strong in what is only their first ever Champions League campaign. Both teams have 10 points going into match-day 6 of the competition, and we are yet to know which team will take hold of the first position ahead of the draw for the Last 16.
So Werder Bremen vs Inter Milan is an important match for Rafael Benitez who has more to do to convince Internazionale fans that he is the right man for the job.
As they seat on top of Group A with 7 points, a win at White Hart Lane will seal Tottenham’s qualification into the next round of the competition even though it will not guarantee them a top spot finish. Harry Redknapp’s men are doing remarkably well in the Champions League.
Nothing has changed in Group A; all four teams have a single point after drawing on match-day one. It looks like chances are open for any side to qualify for the Last 16 even if it seems too early to make such analysis. Actually, Group A’s contenders are yet to prove which team has the most potential on the pitch but Coach Thomas Schaaf wants Werder Bremen to beat Inter Milan tonight.
“We know how good Inter Milan were last season. They won everything they could. We are looking forward to meeting them,” the manager explained to UEFA.com.
“They are a great team, with the same qualities as ever. Inter Milan will probably try to score from the start, but we don’t want to just sit back. We want to show that we can be tough opponents.”
Internazionale have experienced mixed results this season and the team is yet to adjust to Rafael Benitez’s plans since Jose Mourinho’s departure. A 2-2 draw against FC Twente was all that the UEFA Champions League titleholders could earn in the Netherlands as they kicked off their 2010/2011 European campaign two weeks ago.
Group A: FC Twente 2-2 Inter Milan; Werder Bremen 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Now Coach Harry Redknapp is keen to avoid the same mistake again as he takes Spurs away to Werder Bremen on match-day one of the UEFA Champions League. In an interview with Sky Sports, the manager openly spoke about ideas concerning Tottenham Hotspur’s formation.
Harry Redknapp, who would have to deal with the absence of crocked Jermaine Defoe, explained:
“I’m not going away from home to play 4-4-2 as we’ll get opened up. We’ll go to Germany and...
Group A: Inter Milan, Werder Bremen, Tottenham Hotspur, FC Twente
These four teams compose an interesting section. Let’s see what Tottenham Hotspur will make of their first season in the UEFA Champions League. In the meantime, Rafael Benitez will try to help Inter Milan defend their title so starting well in the group stages will surely be imperative. Don’t write off FC Twente’s chances just yet, by the way, and don’t forget about Werder Bremen’s power either.
Group B: Olympique Lyonnais, Benfica, Schalke 04, Hapoel Tel-Aviv
A fairly balanced group. Top seeds Lyon will have to watch out for an upset, though. Benfica won’t seat back for yet another season. Likewise, Schalke 04 would love to prove what German football is all about. They might also benefit a lot from Raul’s remarkable knowledge in the UEFA Champions League. Hapoel Tel-Aviv? Well, they will need to work out wonders because they look more likely to occupy the bottom of Group B after match-day 6.
However, Angelo Palombo remains confident that the Italians can turn things around and thus make it into the group stages of Europe’s greatest club football tournament. The Sampdoria skipper analyzed things ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League play-off match. UEFA’s official website quoted Palombo as saying:
“We need to be even more aggressive than we were in the first game. They [Werder Bremen] seemed to be vulnerable to our counter-attacks and to our fast breaks at times. But we were just missing the final pass.”
Hamburg SV vs Schalke 04 – Coach Felix Magath Doesn’t Entertain Fears
Statements from the manager on Schalke 04’s official website reveal how keen Felix Magath is ahead of the 2010/2011 German Bundesliga season. The former Wolfsburg boss stated:
“I’m glad that the time for preparation is over. I’d rather play away after a long summer break; the home team is under more pressure to win. I think we hold a good chance.
“Like in our team, the Hamburg squad has changed. They have strengthened.” But as Hamburg have shown defensive weakness, the Schalke 04 coach added:
Now as many may think that the German club have just committed suicide, Werder Bremen could prove otherwise on Wednesday night when they take on Italy’s Sampdoria in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off. The general manager of the Bundesliga side, Klaus Allofs, declared a few days ago:
“We will be focusing on sporting matters. We won’t be giving consideration to potential transfer issues. Against Sampdoria, we will play with our strongest team.”
