Vitoria Setubal vs FC Porto Report

Sunday February 19 2012,
FC Porto bounced back from their Europa League defeat at Zenit St. Petersburg with a 3-1 triumph at rock bottom Vitória Setúbal on Sunday night.
Porto were always too good for struggling Vitória, who have not a game in the league since October last year.

New signing Marc Janko continued his fine form with a powerful 3rd-minute header to make it 3 goals in 3 games since signing for the Portuguese champions.

Midfielder Fernando doubled Porto's lead before half time with a calm finish after being played in by Hulk.

FC Porto travel to rock bottom Vitoria Setubal on Sunday knowing that a strong end to the campaign to snatch the Liga ZON Sagres title from leaders Benfica is increasingly looking like the only salvation from a disappointing season.
The 2-1 home defeat to Manchester City in the Europa League on Thursday further fuelled the considerable criticism that has been thrown the way of coach Vítor Pereira.

“We haven’t got the luxury of being able to drop points,” said Pereira. He’s right. Trailing Benfica by five points, and with a rampant Braga waiting for a slip-up to take 2nd place, anything other than a win at struggling Vitória will be a disaster for the Dragons.

Several chances had already been created and missed before Nolito equalised in the 24th minute.

A quickfire brace from Cardozo then put Benfica 3-1 up and well in charge as the players went into the interval.

A buoyant Benfica will be looking to consolidate top spot as they host struggling Vitória de Setúbal at the Estádio da Luz on Saturday night.
The Eagles are soaring after finally pulling away from bitter rivals FC Porto at the table summit after last weekend’s results, albeit only by two points.

Benfica have been in scintillating form of late, scoring no fewer than 13 goals in their last 3 matches. And having lost only once in all competitions this season, perhaps the biggest task Benfica coach Jorge Jesus faces this weekend is to stamp out any complacency among his players.

“Nobody wins a match before it is played. If we think we are the better team we’ll have to prove it on the pitch. We want to defend first place. The Benfica players and coach know that you only achieve things with a lot of sacrifice and a lot of hard work,” said Jesus.
