Real Madrid too steady for Barcelona with 13 weeks to go in La Liga

Ten-man Barcelona overcame the threat of Sporting Gijon on Saturday with a 3-1 victory. However, Real Madrid’s 5-0 demolition of Espanyol means that the 10-point between the two giants is yet to decrease.

The match saw midfielder Andres Iniesta net his first league goal of the season. David Barral equalized early in the second half for Sporting Gijon but Barcelona stole the show during the last 15 minutes of the game.

Seydou Keita put his side in front for the second time on the night with a terrific curling shot. Xavi ensured Barca’s victory with a goal in the 88th minute. With that win, Barcelona temporarily closed the gap to 7 points against foes Real Madrid.

“I’m very pleased because it was very important to win. We were ten points down so the league would have been lost [if Barca had not won],” Seydou Keita told news source Sport after the Gijon win.

Cote d’Ivoire also kicked out co-hosts Equatorial Guinea. The Elephants’ victory was straightforward, though: two powerful goals from Didier Drogba and an outrageous free-kick by Yaya Toure did the trick.

Like Cote d’Ivoire, Zambia recorded a 3-0 win in the quarter-finals. Christopher Katongo was the star man as the Chipolopolo dismantled the brave Sudanese.

Ghana joined Zambia in the semis thanks to a hard-fought triumph over Tunisia. Dede Ayew scored the winning goal in extra-time to force the Tunisians to a 2-1 defeat.

Seydou Keita has urged Barcelona to clinch their third Supercopa de España trophy in a row.
Barcelona will travel to Real Madrid for the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup on August 14 before hosting Los Blancos on August 17. Ahead of this two-legged contest, midfielder Seydou Keita has underlined the importance of winning for the sake of great momentum.

“Obviously, it’s not a World Cup Final. But a game against Real Madrid is always important, both for the fans and for us players,” Seydou Keita told reporters this week.

“It’s a final and both teams will want to win. What’s more, it’s the first official competition in the season and it’s always important to start on a winning note.”
