A Look Back at the Bundesliga Season that Was

Monday May 7 2012,
Tags: Dortmund, Bayern, Koln, Hamburg, Ausgburg, Monchengladbach, Schalke
Köln’s seasons went up in flames as a Bundesliga giant managed to keep their status despite a season of struggles.

Since the inception of the Bundesliga in 1963, only one team has represented it every season- Hamburger SV. Their status as the Bundesliga’s ‘dinosaur’ was being seriously threatened as Frank Arnesen brought along a line of Chelsea youngsters to represent the Germans. Arnesen almost contradicted the statements he had earlier made about...

Match day 34- A day of goodbyes in the Bundesliga

Friday May 4 2012,
Tags: Köln, Bayern, Hertha, Schalke
Last week, Senor Raul Gonzalez and Michael Ballack brought an end to their careers in the Bundesliga. This week, the prodigal son of Köln will be playing his final match in Germany’s top-flight.
‘Revenge is a dish best served cold.’ This saying might run true in Berlin this week as Hoffenheim visits. Hertha will be at their knees hoping that Bayern and Markus Babel help them survive in the top flight. Just one season after their promotion, they will most likely depart the Bundesliga, leaving Germany without a club from its capital in its premier league.

Hertha went downhill ever since Babel was shown the door on Match-day 17 following a match against his current club. That day the score was 1-1. A draw won’t be enough for Hertha to grab the relegation play-off spot this time. A win for them coupled with a loss for Köln against a Bayern side challenging on two fronts will see Hertha finish 16th.

A Look Ahead to the Bundesliga this Weekend

Friday April 27 2012,
Tags: Bayern, Stuttgart, Dortmund, Schalke, Monchengladbach
The Champions League spots are almost settled but there is still quite a lot to fight for at the bottom.
The top two sides in the league are Bayern and Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund has already won the league while Bayern has already made second place their own. Bayern has nothing to play for in the league in the last two remaining games. However, the players and board alike feel that their fans always deserve a good performance.

They were true to their words in Bremen, when, despite fielding a side filled with reserve players, they claimed a 1-2 victory last week. This week, Bayern plays the final home game in the league and their second last home game of the season. Their final home game will be against Chelsea in the Champions League final on May 19th.

Will Dortmund finally shut the door in Bayern's face this week?

Friday April 20 2012,
Tags: Bayern, Dortmund, Monchengladbach, Schalke, Augsburg, Bremen
The Bundesliga title race is as good as over. The standings as far as the top four are concerned can be settled this week.

Werder Bremen vs. FC Bayern München

In past seasons, this fixture might have acted as a title decider. This season, this fixture is nothing but a side note. Bremen, sitting eighth in the table, is still chasing a Europa League spot. They aren’t doing themselves much...

The title race is settled but there are still exciting games to be played in the Bundesliga.

Bundesliga Review: Bayern and Dortmund both win ahead of Wednesday's clash

Monday April 9 2012,
Tags: Bayern, Dortmund, Augsburg, Schalke, Hannover, Leverkusen
The matches this week almost transpired as expected- in mid week, we might find out where the title will be heading to at the end of the season.
Bastian Schweinsteiger shunned a reporter’s questions after Bayern’s derby victory. The reporter’s question was meant to belittle Augsburg and Schweinsteiger, out of respect, chose to move away from the scene. The German completed 90 minutes in a match for the first time since October.

An almost unknown side has emerged to Bayern’s character now. Bayern has learnt how to win ‘ugly’. Mario Gomez in his post match comments said that Bayern cannot be expected to thrash opponents every week. Indeed, Bayern’s win over Augsburg was an ‘ugly’ one. Dortmund beat Wolfsburg on the same day at the same time consigning die Wolfe to only their fourth home defeat of the season.

There is plenty to play for in the Bundesliga this week

Three vital matches take place in the Bundesliga this week aside from the blockbuster between Dortmund and Bayern.

Bremen – Mönchengladbach

Gladbach has virtually almost nothing left to play for this season. On current form and considering Schalke’s current form, third place is seemingly unreachable. They are tucked comfortable in the fourth and final Champions League spot, nine points...

Bayern - Augsburg

Bayern is now well and truly fighting for an elusive treble. They must win to remain in the title race. Bayern is currently on an eight match winning streak. Europa League: Can Hannover and Schalke overturn their first leg deficits to win their respective ties?

Wednesday April 4 2012,
Tags: Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Schalke, Hannover 96
Schalke has a mountain to climb after the first leg loss to Bilbao while Hannover will be looking to pull off another surprising victory.

Athletic Bilbao – Schalke

Schalke’s problems at the back are no secret to any casual observer of the Bundesliga. Amongst the top four sides in the league, Schalke has conceded the largest number of goals. It is their potency at the other end which has helped them escape many a time in matches. Against Bilbao in the first leg, Schalke was...

A mouth watering contest awaits us in the Europa League between Schalke and Bilbao

Wednesday March 28 2012,
Tags: Schalke, Athletic Bilbao
This Europa League clash is the one to watch considering the attacking talent that will take to the pitch.
Athletic Bilbao isn’t having the best of league campaigns. They currently sit eleventh in La Liga. Their fans perhaps expect a better finish in the league than eleventh spot considering the attacking riches that are available to them. In the Europa League, Bilbao has been nothing short of brilliant; Sir Alex Ferguson can tell you just how devastating this Bilbao side can be when their attack truly ticks.

Schalke is having one of their best ever seasons in recent memory. Schalke in the 2010 season finished second in the Bundesliga and reached the semifinals of the German Cup. They then won the DFB Pokal and reached the Champions League semifinals in 2011. Manuel Neuer then transferred out of the club; however, his transfer had very little impact on Schalke.

Bundesliga Review: The Ruhr Teams Lit the League Up as Bayern continued to win this week

Monday March 26 2012,
Tags: Bayern, Dortmund, Hertha Berlin, Schalke, Leverkusen, Hanover
The Bundesliga recorded a massive away victory in its history books this week. However, Bayern wasn’t the team to go off on a goal-scoring rampage this time around.
When Köln scored the opener against Dortmund via Milivoje Novakovic, there was a slight doubt about Dortmund’s chances of winning the game. All those doubts were erased soon afterwards as Robert Lewandowski, Shinji Kagawa, Ivan Perisic, Lukasz Pizsczek and Ilkay Guendogan all scored to win 1-6.

Monchengladbach failed to recover from the misery of a cup defeat on penalties. They succumbed to Hoffenheim in strange fashion. Gladbach led the match for 75 minutes after Marco Reus grabbed an early goal to give his side the lead. In the 77th and 79th minutes, Hoffenheim scored through Roberto Firmino and Boris Vukcevic to lead and eventually win the game.

An Exciting Weekend awaits us in the Bundesliga

Friday March 23 2012,
Tags: Bayern, Dortmund, Monchengladbach, Schalke, Leverkusen, Hanover, Koln
‘Exciting’ is the only word which can describe the Bundesliga action which will take place tomorrow.
Köln always is a very entertaining side- regarding matters on and off the pitch. After having been absolutely thumped 4-1 by Hanover last week, they take to the pitch against the holders Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund was in action in mid-week in the DFB Pokal. It took them a full 120 minutes to dispose of SpVgg Greuther Furth with Ilkay Guendogan scoring the winner in the final minute of extra time.

Other matches include a contest between Hoffenheim and Monchengladbach, who were also in cup action during the week. Bayern takes on Hanover, a contest which has seen Hanover come out on top in the previous two meetings. The biggest match of the weekend takes places between two of the most exciting sides of the league, fourth placed Schalke and fifth placed Leverkusen.

What can we make of the Champions League and Europa League draw results for Bundesliga clubs?

Friday March 16 2012,
Tags: Hanover, Bayern, Schalke
The Champions League and Europa League draws have been completed – the German teams have tough tasks on their hands if they are to win either European tournament.
In the inaugural Champions League season in 1992-93, Marseille won the competition. The stadium they won the final on was the Olympiastadion, precisely Bayern’s former stadium in Munich. Nowadays, the stadium is called the Allianz Arena and Bayern features there every other week and sometimes in midweek too.

The sides have never faced each other in the history of the competition and have been paired with each other for the first time. Bayern players are perhaps relieved at avoiding Barcelona and Real Madrid but nothing can be taken for granted. Two teams that have beaten Bayern soundly in recent memory were defeated by Marseille- Dortmund and Inter won’t have fond memories of the French.

The Bundesliga promises plenty of excitement this week

Friday March 16 2012,
Tags: Bayern, Dortmund, Monchengladbach, Schalke
The Bundesliga this week promises nothing but pure excitement as the top three sides all have tough tasks in their hands.
Bayern’s away troubles are no secret to anybody. Two victories at the Allianz Arena by score-lines of 7-1 (against Hoffenheim) and 7-0 (against Basel) might make a few historians turning pages; however, while the results might have raised team morale, the bitter truth is Bayern has won just one away game in 2012.

Dortmund meanwhile takes on Bremen, a side they beat with just ten men in the first half of the season, 0-2. Bremen last week absolutely battered Hanover 3-0. Bremen’s deficiencies at the back are what have caused their fans headaches for many a season under Thomas Schaaf and Dortmund as we know, is brilliant at punishing defences.

Bayern München vs Schalke 04 Preview

Friday February 24 2012,
Tags: Schalke 04, Bayern Munchen, Germand Bundesliga
Schalke is perhaps waiting with delight to avenge the defeat in Gelsenkirchen this season.

Bayern will play Schalke in the aftermath of their Champions League upset to Basel.Team News

For Bayern, Bastian Schweinsteiger is definitely out of this match as is Daniel Van Buyten. Diego Contento is yet to return while Breno is still being hampered by knee problems. Jupp Heynckes otherwise has a full strength squad to choose from. At the moment though, he might prefer substituting his whole attack for a fit Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Schalke has been hit by injuries to goalkeepers Ralf Fahrmann and Lars Unnerstall. Former Bundesliga winner, Timo Hildebrand is currently keeping for them. Sergio Escudero will not play a part in this one due to injury. Jermaine Jones is yet to return from a long term suspension thanks to a moment of madness on his part when he maliciously attempted to hurt Marco Reus of Mönchengladbach earlier in the season.

Bundesliga Review: Stuttgart, Köln, Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim battered by title contenders

Monday January 30 2012,
Tags: Schalke, Dortmund, Bayern, Leverkusen, bremen, Mönchengladbach
Bayern continues to lead the way on goal difference in the Bundesliga. None of the four teams which are contenders for the salad bowl dropped points this week.
Schalke was on the verge of losing their connection with the top four. Lukas Podolski struck in the fourth minute and Köln took the lead into half-time. Köln actually held on till the hour mark but Schalke found a way. An unlikely source in the form of Ciprian Marica scored the equalizer. Then, Schalke started compounding misery on Köln.

Marica grabbed a second 12 minutes later. Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored from the penalty spot just six minutes after the second goal. Benjamin Höger added one more just four minutes after the third. Now, that is what you call an ‘attacking force’. While their Ruhr rivals aren’t exactly scoring for fun, they are scoring quite a few too.

Bundesliga: Do we have a four-way title race on our hands?

Monday January 23 2012,
Tags: Bayern, Monchengladbach, Schalke, Stuttgart
One similarity was extremely obvious in the matches of the big sides this week: they were all terribly one-sided games.
The biggest game of the weekend took place at Borussia Park between Bayern and Gladbach. The result was a one-sided victory….. for Gladbach. Schalke took on Stuttgart and dismantled them just as Gladbach did to Bayern. Dortmund drubbed HSV in sophisticated fashion in the north of Germany.

As a result, the top four teams in the Bundesliga are separated by just one point, with the top three separated by just goal difference. Karl Heinz Rummenigge wanted Bayern to be the team that every other team chases. They are the top side in the league even after the defeat- however, they are hanging on to the coveted position by nothing more than a single thread.

Who is the most likely Candidate to Win the Bundesliga title?

Wednesday January 4 2012,
Tags: Bayern, Dortmund, Monchengladbach, Schalke, Bremen, Leverkusen
The top four teams are separated by only four points. This Bundesliga title race has the makings of a very intense and special one.
Marco Reus today dedicated himself to the club that rejected him not too long ago, Borussia Dortmund following the end of the current season. In retrospect, that transfer was a rivalry between Bayern and Dortmund, with Dortmund triumphing again. Bayern had targeted Reus publicly and as we all know, Bayern does not like to lose out in any aspect to their rivals.

Bayern nonetheless has the edge where it really matters- the Bundesliga title race. They are comfortably at the top with a three point lead over the Ruhr sides and a four point lead over Moenchengladbach. Two sides who have contended in recent seasons sit fifth and sixth in table: Bremen and Leverkusen.

Bundesliga Mid Season Review 2011-12

The Final Weekend of 2011 in the Bundesliga ended with plenty of drama as Markus Babbel was sacked as coach of Hertha Berlin.
Markus Babbel is an ambitious man. He spent long years as a player with Bayern and Liverpool and thus has a winning mentality. He perhaps saw Hertha as a club that was not going to move forward. As a result, he opted not to extend his contract and he said as much to Hertha’s general manager Michael Preetz. Preetz according to Babbel refused to be truthful to the media.

Babbel was sacked this week. He will be replaced by Michael Skibbe. Hertha’s final result under Babbel was a 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim in Sinsheim. Hertha is seated not too securely in mid table. Babel’s former team meanwhile secured the Autumn Championship in Bavaria.
