Uruguayan striker Santiago Silva will be the latest reinforcement of Argentine champions Boca Juniors it was confirmed on Friday. Despite the imminent transfer, the player will only be able to participate in the Copa Libertadores in the first half of 2012.
Daniel Angelici, the president of Boca, revealed to Deportivo Telam that "half an hour ago FIFA approved that Silva can play for Boca in the Copa Libertadores."
Silva, 31, has been linked with a move to Boca for several weeks now, but the club were hesitant to purchase the player because they were unsure as to whether FIFA law would permit him to play for a third club within the space of a year.
The Uruguayan goal-poacher could return to Argentina with defending champions Boca Juniors.
The agent of Santiago Silva, Pablo Betancourt, discarded any possibilities of the Uruguayan striker returning to Velez Sarsfield, opening the door for a future transfer to Argentine Apertura champions Boca Juniors.
"We spoke with Velez, we reunited with them, but they couldn't buy out his contract. Now we can negotiate with other teams," the agent explained to TyC Sports on Friday.
Betancourt stated that if Boca want to purchase the striker first they would have to ask for the collaboration of the AFA so that the regulation would permit the Uruguayan to be eligible to play for three clubs in the space of a year.
