The historic derby, because it was the first since the relegation of River Plate to the Argentine second division, was decided by a goal in each half by talented Boca Juniors striker Nicolas Blandi.
River pushed to the attack straight from the kick-off and although they looked extremely dangerous, their approach appeared to backfire as from the run of play Blandi fired Boca ahead in the 6th minute when he connected to a precise right-wing cross from Pablo Mouche with a bullet header.

Fierce rivals Boca Juniors and River Plate clash in the latest edition of the always eagerly-awaited Argentine superclasico at the Centenario stadium in Chaco on Wednesday.
For the first time in the entire history of the Buenos Aires derby, the rivals will face each other coming from different divisions, as while Boca are the reigning Argentine champions, River ended 2011 in second place of the second division, after having been relegated from the top-flight midway through last year.
Nevertheless, the superclasico is always a special occasion, and this time won't be the exception, as both teams are eager to inflict defeat upon each other regardless of whether it is a pre-season friendly or a top-of-the-table league clash.
David Trezeguet scores on his River Plate debut to help the Argentine giants beat Racing Club to obtain the Copa Cuidad de Mar del Plata.

French striker David Trezeguet was on target in his River Plate debut to help Los Millonarios defeat Racing Club 2-1 to lift the Copa Cuidad de Mar del Plata at the Jose Maria Minella stadium on Thursday.
River started the game in the best possible manner, as with just six minutes gone they went ahead when Rogelio Funes Mori bursted into the area and beat Racing goalkeeper Sebastian Saja with a superb lobbed effort.
Racing appeared to be shell-shocked after conceding the goal, and a pumped River would have capitalised on this if Saja hadn't kept out goal-bound efforts from Lucas Ocampos and Alejandro Dominguez.
The midfielder believes the fact that both teams find themselves in different divisions will be irrelevant come kick-off time.

"River will win 2-1," Sanchez declared to Radio Cooperativa program 'De cano vale doble' on Thursday.
Even if the match is still almost two weeks away, there has been ongoing talk about what the final outcome of the encounter will be, especially because for the first time in the history of the derby the teams don't find themselves in the same league division.
"For the quality of both squads, the difference won't be noticeable even if the teams play in different divisions," affirmed the former Godoy Cruz player.
The defensive midfielder has returned to the club to help them in their fight to return to the Argentine top-flight.
Experienced defensive midfielder Leonardo Ponzio returned to Argentine giants River Plate after signing a three-year deal with the club on Saturday. The former Real Zaragoza captain decided to join the club to help them return to the Argentine first division.

The Argentine international, who is clearly hurt by River's lack of appreciation for him, believes the club was relegated to the Argentine second division for "working very badly in the last few years." But he didn't want to expand on the subject.
"I had a family problem with my son, in which I had to return to live in Argentina for a while and they didn't want me. Nobody called me to return. I grew up at the club and I was really hurt by the fact that they didn't want me," explained D'Alessandro.

Argentine heavyweights River Plate confirmed the signing of French striker David Trezeguet on Monday night. The former Juventus scoring-machine penned a two and a half year deal with Los Millonarios, with an option for a further year.
Trezeguet, 32, is the first new signing for River, however, he won't be the last, as the club board have decided that they will listen to the wishes of coach Matias Almeyda in bringing in a high-profile midfielder.
This player could either be Fernando Belluschi or Leonardo Ponzio, who are based in Portugal and Spain, respectively. Although there has been contact with both players talks are still premature.
El Clasico finds River and Boca in poor form. River tries a new manager as Borghi chances his arm as Boca coach.

"I have no idea whether I'll be sitting on the bench for the Clasico" said Boca manager Claudio Borghi earlier on the week, but he finally assumed the challenge when River president Daniel Passarella gave Miguel Angel Cappa the sack as Millonario manager.
River is drifting in the middle of the positions table after a promising debut in the tournament. J J Lopez is likely to be the manager for the Superclasico. He didn't want to reveal much about his strategies. Sidelined by River former coach Cappa, River legendary striker Ariel Ortega might return to the starting eleven.
An unexpected defeat All Boys last week in Floresta killed the spirit of the players who'll have to work hard during the week to improve their playing for the derby.
River dominated the game but their lack of accuracy forced them to suffer until the last minute. Jonathan Maidana was the unexpected scorer of the winning goal early in the second half.

River failed to celebrate a single victory without Matias Almeyda in the midfield. His return granted River a decisive victory.
J J Lopez's Millonarios might have not played at their best but made enough merits to defeat Claudio Borghi's Boca Juniors in a game that offered little excitement to the crowds. Juan Roman Riquelme finished the first half struggling with injuries, making room for Cristian Chavez, who could do nothing to sharpen Boca offense.
River attackers created many opportunities to score but Boca goalkeeper Javier Garcia's excellent form denied their every attempt. Martin Palermo was unable to score his tenth goal in a Superclasico.
Former Boca player Jonathan Maidana score the winning goal with a powerful header that beat the star of the match, Javier Garcia.
Claudio Borghi's time as Boca head coach might be running out. Lopez had the best possible welcome at the Monumental. Perhaps his intership will last longer than expected.
Two leaders will fight for their right to lead the positions table

Arsenal has been the nightmare of many big teams in this tournament, as Gustavo Alfaro's boys wield weapons of mass destruction in the offense, with a coherent defense which exposes no weakness. River Plate has individual capacities that outshine Arsenal's strategy, but their powerful team work might be enough to bring River Plate to its knees at the Monumental. Luciano Leguizamon and Mauro Obolo for arsenal and Rogelio Funes Mori for River Plate stand as the top strikers of this league: Whoever scores this week might claim the top only for himself, who will make it?
A two-faced Millionaire
River Plate is always under the spotlight, as the Rojiblancos are able to unleash enormous forces when focused, but the players lose the concentration frequently enough to expose certain weaknesses and mistakes when advancing. The coach is aware his team combines veterans and young promises on almost equal proportions, and week after week only the fittest make it within the starting eleven.
Two major teams, leading the positions table take on each other on Sunday's hottest match.

When your rival's coach states you are the natural candidate for the title, it is clear half match is won. Miguel Angel Cappa cannot ignore the uncanny strength of Velez's squad, but River itself has shown numerous reasons to be taken seriously for this year's title fight. River Plate might finally escape from the relegation fight, as the mediocre performance of the last seasons doomed Cappa's boys to a restless battle. A draw will be worthless for both teams, who would bag this Apertura's six pointer?
The sound of silence
One week ago, Velez was without a doubt the strongest team in Argentina's Apertura.. Perfect scoring, perfect natural interaction between midfielder and striker and much more. But first Boca Juniors last Sunday and later on Banfield for the Copa Sudamericana had given Ricardo Gareca's boys an opportunity to taste the bitterness of a defeat. Many problems appeared in these last two matches and Gareca should find some answers soon not to be overwhelmed by the lack of results.
In a week of many Derbies none will catch more attention than River vs Independiente, a clash of giants in which only one would leave the stadium with a smile upon its face.

Miguel Angel Cappa is slowly awakening River's fury, and thanks to him the Millonarios are recovering their spirit after over three years of disappointment. The crowds believe River can fight once again at the top of Argentina's football. Independiente could have lifted last Clausura's title, but something went wrong along the way and the Rojos had to taste the bitterness of mediocrity only a few months ago. Much more than three points will be in play this Saturday night, as on such early stages of a tournament a minor advantage can be overwhelming. Two young players (Manuel Lanzini for River and Fernando Godoy for Independiente) will replace experienced players as Ariel Ortega and Sebastian Battion).
Dream is destiny
It's been over 16 years since Independiente could celebrate its last title in Argentina's professional football. And the former King of Cups is starving without victories. Tolo Gallego managed to jealously guard the top of the Clausura for over five weeks, but the whole oneness of the team shattered during the last weeks of the tournament, allowing Argentinos to run wildly for the top, which they conquered finally.
Two teams in a tight situation will face each other on Argentina's most popular match. But more than three points will be in play for both sides
Without a doubt this will be one of the strangest Superclasico in years, as both Boca Juniors and River Plate appear to have left their place as Argentina's major teams to other, but nonetheless their fans are waiting for this game with the same expectation as every other...
