Champions League: Chelsea wary as Messi and Guardiola’s Barcelona remain confident

Only the scoreboard shows that Chelsea have the edge over Barcelona ahead of tonight’s crucial game at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona enter tonight’s Champions League match against Chelsea with a 1-0 loss from the first-leg defeat in London to overturn. The competition’s titleholders have not beaten the Blues in their last 6 meetings but only a 2-0 margin victory at the Camp Nou would do.

“We begin with a 1-0 disadvantage and we have 90 minutes to turn it around. […] I have no doubt that we will be in Munich, I have been thinking like this since the start of the season,” Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola revealed in Monday’s pre-match press conference.

“It is possible that we will have to score three goals [because Chelsea may score one]. I do not know if this [game] will be the biggest challenge since I have been a coach, but I always look at these matches with optimism because of the faith I have in these players.

Chelsea managed to make an impact on transfer deadline day with the 12 million pound signing of Portuguese midfielder Raul Meireles.
Meireles handed in a transfer request to Liverpool on Wednesday, and will be reunited with Andre Villas-Boas. The Chelsea manager briefly working with the fellow Portuguese Meireles before the midfielder moved to Liverpool last year.

Meireles finished last season as arguably Liverpool’s form player, and when he recovers from his current collarbone injury he will be an important addition for the Blue’s.

Chelsea have undoubted talent in the midfield department, but do have some depth issues that could hurt them over the course of a season. As impressive as Manchester United look right now, it is worth remembering that Chelsea had scored more, conceded less and looked equally impressive in the opening stages of the season.

It will be Roy Hodgson's first encounter against Liverpool since the club sacked him three months ago as Liverpool prepare to visit West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
While it seems like a normal Premier League clash between West Brom and Liverpool, there is something else that is providing all the personification as both teams seek to continue their revival towards the end of the season. Roy Hodgson will be facing his former employers, Liverpool who sacked him in January after only six months into the job.

Hodgson's time at Liverpool was never a satisfying or a productive one. Having guided Fulham to new heights in the previous season, lots of aspects were expected from the widely-travelled Hodgson.

However, there wasn't any sort of inspiring moment for the KOP fan to acknowledge and it always seemed that things were never going to materialize for him at Anfield. Consequently, he was sacked from his position, much to the pleasure of their suffering fans.

Liverpool Capture Raul Meireles Praised By Portugal Coach Carlos Queiroz

Liverpool’s new signing Raul Meireles has received praises from his Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz. The former FC Porto play maker, who was targeted by Manchester United before joining English Premier League rivals Liverpool, is meant to fill the void created by the departure of Javier Mascherano to Barcelona.

Now that Real Madrid have beaten Manchester United to land Mesut Ozil, Sir Alex Ferguson may be even more serious in his desire to sign FC Porto and Portugal midfielder Raul Meireles.

FC Porto's Raul Meireles reacts as Manchester United's Ryan Giggs gestures.According to English magazine Sunday Mirror, the 27-year-old who has a few more years left on his FC Porto contract could join the Mancunian outfit if the Red Devils provide a high amount of money. Reports state that £15m will be enough for an agreement to be reached between the two clubs.

Over the past couple of season, Raul Meireles faced English sides against which FC Porto succumbed in the knock-out stages of the Champions League.

FC Porto lost 3-2 on aggregate in the quarter-finals of the European competion two years ago as Raul Meireles' fellow Portuguese national team mate, Cristiano Ronaldo, emerged as the hero for scoring the winning goal of the tie.
