Rafael Marquez believes that Mexico will need to impose their true style of play in order to defend the Gold Cup title they won two years ago.
Mexico will kick off their Gold Cup campaign against El Salvador tomorrow and Rafael Marquez is already talking on tactics that will enable them a higher chance of retaining the title they won against the USA in 2009. He believes that they will need to implement the same brand of football they showcased two years ago.

“The style that we’ve displayed for a few years now [is to be aggressive], and that style will prevail for now. So we’re going to try and play that way in this Gold Cup.

“I think we have to play our way, as we’ve always done, and not play a style that’s not ours and one that our rivals want us to play,” he added. “El Salvador won’t play as New Zealand did, so we’ll have to try to impose our style and maybe adapt [to El Salvador].”

Despite the fact that the Monarcas may very well win the Clausura 2011, Rafael Marquez Lugo will probably not get all the recognition he deserves from his splendid season and post-season efforts.

Alas he has been overlooked for Mexico’s Gold Cup squad—eclipsed by Monterrey’s Aldo De Nigris and his own teammate, Elias Hernandez. Yet Marquez Lugo has been a consistent drive in Morelia’s fight to the championship and should be allowed to play for El Tri.

Perhaps the grounds for neglecting Marquez Lugo centre on the notion that he is neither an “old pro” nor a “superstar kid.” He has not had the experience of an “old pro,” like that other Rafael Marquez of FC Barcelona and now NYC Red Bulls.

In an animated game, Morelia comes out on top and puts America in a precarious position
By: C.I. Sanchez

Morelia took an early 1-0 head start in the 16th minute and never let go of its lead. Now, America will have to figure out a master plan to overcome its slight 1-2 deficit. Tomas Boy, Morelia’s animated manager, must certainly be happy with the way his team defended and took advantage of its few attacking opportunities.

Minus a mishap in the 69th minute, the Morelia backline had a fairly solid performance. For a squad that allowed an unexpected 24 goals during the regular season of the Clausura, goalkeeper Federico Vilar had his defenders cover the 18-yard box quite well.

Does Rafael Marquez Lugo Have The Firepower To Lead Morelia To A Championship?

On paper, Morelia striker Rafael Marquez Lugo looks impressive: 9 goals, 3 assists, a 60% shot on goal rate, and scoring goals in 7 of 14 games.
By: C.I. Sanchez

On the field, he seems all the more dangerous with his almost uncanny ability to quickly penetrate the box and ultimately hit the back of the net. Indeed, a prime example of his impressive form was his goal against Club America—a nice strike that beat Mexico’s top goalkeeper Memo Ochoa in the first minute of match!

Marquez Lugo has put on a brilliant display that has propelled the Monarcas to an impressive 8-3-3 record (currently second overall and second in group 3). After tumultuous to average seasons with 7 different clubs in the Primera Division, the Clausura 2011 just might be Marquez Lugo’s best season that can be topped off with a championship for the Monarcas.
