The third and final leg of the final went Juan Aurich's way after a dramatic penalty shootout.
Juan Aurich won the Peruvian championship for the first time after defeating Alianza Lima 3-1 on penalty kicks, in the third and final match of the title decider on Thursday. The match finished scoreless after 120 minutes.
The win was a historic achievement for Juan Aurich, as it was their first title triumph in their 89-year history. The hero of the night was goalkeeper Diego Penny, who saved two spot-kicks in the penalty shootout.
It was a very hotly contested encounter between two solid sides at a Estadio Nacional de Lima stadium that was packed with Alianza Lima fans. Despite it being an exciting match, it ended scoreless, with Juan Aurich prevailing courtesy of penalty kick assertions from Renzo Sheput, Edgar Balbuena and Colombian veteran Ricardo Ciciliano.
Edison Mendez and Christian Benitez led Ecuador to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Peru in Quito.

Ecuador defeated Peru 2-0 in Quito with second-half goals from Edison Mendez and Christian Benitez. With the win Ecuador moved within one point of South American World Cup qualifying group leaders Uruguay.
The match lacked excitement at the beginning, as both teams were locked in the midfield and hardly created any decent goal-scoring opportunities. Ecuador's best chance to find the back of the net arrived five minutes before the half-time break, but midfielder Segundo Castillo couldn't beat Peru goalkeeper Raul Fernandez.
Peru came more into the game towards the end of the half, and almost went ahead with good efforts from Juan Vargas and Jefferson Farfan, two of their most dangerous players. Other than that they were restricted to long-range shots on goal.
Peru's 'fantastic four' will intend to inflict a rare home defeat upon Ecuador in the altitude of Quito on Tuesday.

Both Ecuador and Peru will be after the three points when they clash in Round 4 of the South American 2014 World Cup qualifiers at the Olimpico Atahualpa stadium in Quito on Tuesday. Both teams have started their campaigns with mixed results and will be looking for a boosting win that would steer them closer towards group leaders Uruguay.
Having narrowly missed out on the 2010 World Cup, Ecuador are desperate to return to the world stage and in order to achieve this they know that they have to continue to win their home games. Having beaten Venezuela comfortably in Quito in their opening World Cup qualifier, Ecuador are well aware that they are capable of inflicting defeat upon the Peruvians as well.
Chile proved too strong for Peru with a valuable victory in the second round of South American World Cup qualifying on Tuesday.

Chile claimed a boosting 4-2 win over Peru, in an intense World Cup qualifier played in front of 35,000 fans at the Monumental stadium in Santiago.
Claudio Borghi's side rebounded from their heavy defeat to Argentina last week, with a good victory that gives them three points from two games.
Goals from Waldo Ponce, Eduardo Vargas and Gary Medel put Chile in a comfortable position, before goals from Claudio Pizarro and Jefferson Farfan made the game very interesting. However, Humberto Suazo restored Chile's advantage from the penalty spot to put the result completely beyond Peru.
Chile look to rebound from their World Cup qualifying defeat to Argentina when they entertain Peru in the latest edition of the 'Derby of the Pacific' on Tuesday.

The Chilean national team will be pressured to claim maximum points when it takes on Peru at the Monumental stadium in Santiago on Tuesday. La Roja were crushed 4-1 by Argentina in their World Cup qualifying opener and are in need of a boosting result.
Chile, who beat Peru 1-0 in the 2011 Copa America in Argentina, are generally very strong when playing in front of their home fans, and will be disappointed with anything less than the three points.
New-look Peru put on a fine performance as they defeated Paraguay 2-0 in their World Cup qualifying opener.

Fresh from a memorable Copa America where they finished in third-place, Peru continued with their big improvement with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Paraguay at the Estadio Nacional in Lima.
Peru, who featured their 'fantastic four', comprising of Claudio Pizarro, Jefferson Farfan, Juan Vargas and Paolo Guerrero, put on a fine display, winning the match with two second half goals from Guerrero, who also finished as the top goal-scorer of the Copa America.
There is great expectation in Peru as the hosts open their road to Brazil 2014 against Paraguay at the Estadio Nacional.

The national teams of Peru and Paraguay, who have undergone dramatic change in recent times, begin their 2014 World Cup qualifying quest with an eagerly awaited match-up in the Peruvian capital.
There is great expectation ahead of the match, because both teams have heaps to prove. While Paraguay were the runner-ups of the Copa America, only losing to Uruguay in the final, the Peruvians crushed Venezuela to claim third-place, a historic feat for the nation, considering that they haven't had too much to cheer about in several years.
Peru have left Venezuela empty-handed as a Guerrero hat-trick punished La Vinotinto in Saturday’s 2011 Copa America third-place final.

Chiroque opened the score line 3 minutes before half-time to give Peru the lead. Paolo Guerrero doubled his team’s advantage with a goal as well. But when Arango found the net for Venezuela in the 78th minute of the match, it seemed like the game was far from being settled.
However, Paolo Guerrero had other ideas. The Peruvian striker scored two more goals in quick succession during the very last moments of the match to break the hearts of the Venezuelans.
With this hat-trick, Paolo Guerrero looks favorite to win the 2011 Copa America’s top scorer award. Following Peru’s feat, the striker told ESPN:
The 2011 Copa America’s third place final will be contested by Venezuela and Peru.

Peru and Venezuela both suffered disappointment in the semi-finals of the 2011 Copa America but they now have a genuine chance of finding consolation through the third-place final battle. The moment has come for Peru and Venezuela to rectify what they got wrong against eventual finalists Uruguay and Paraguay respectively.
But the logic of the word ‘competition’ explains that one team—between Peru and Venezuela—will stumble to misery again while the other will be offered bronze medals at the end of proceedings. It could be hard to define a favorite ahead of this weekend’s third-place final match.
Uruguay are well on track to becoming 2011 Copa America champions! Luis Suarez’s second half brace powered La Celeste Olimpica past Peru to reach the final of the competition.

As of now, many are fancying the Uruguayans to lift the title in Buenos Aires in a week’s time. It’s never easy to oust hosts, is it? We saw Japan stunning Germany at the Women’s World Cup. The rest of the story is easy to tell; the Japanese went on to win the title. Is this something Uruguay are going to emulate at the Copa America?
Their chances to do so are big enough. The Uruguayans don’t just have great strikers in the form of Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez. They have a great goalkeeper too. Muslera is the name.
This is a shot stopper whose pair of hands make Uruguay’s goal post seem protected by gates. Indeed, Muslera’s performance has caught the eye of the public at the benefit of Oscar Tabarez’s team.
The 2011 Copa America final is so near now for both Peru and Uruguay.

If Argentina’s soil was meant to let minnows prevail at the end of the road, then bet on Peru to stun Uruguay in midweek. The Peruvians took Colombia by surprise in the quarter-finals of the tournament with 2 goals in extra-time. Uruguay, meanwhile, exhibited their defensive skills against a Messi-led Argentina.
Talking about Uruguay’s team info, they have mixed news. Mauricio Victorino’s fitness condition is doubtful following the injury he sustained the other time.
But Uruguay will welcome back Sebastian Coates who has finished serving his suspension. Meanwhile, the exclusion of Diego Perez has been confirmed since the player received a red card against Argentina.
Brazil and Chile must secure the game in 90 minutes to avoid an awkward surprise this Sunday.

A smart, tactical football gave Peru and Uruguay the opportunity to outwit the alleged candidates and advance to the semi-finals. Despite showing some of their best football, Argentina and Colombia are out.
What's the logic behind these two unexpected results, and most importantly, what can Brazil and Chile learn from them? Argentina fell at Colon's "Elephant's Graveyard", a legendary stadium in which endless major teams have fell throughout history.
Brazil prepares for a tough clash against Paraguay. From a tactical point of view, I believe this game may resemble Argentina's, with the Scratch dominating the game while Paraguay try to take advantage of their aerial superiority.
Chile's coach Claudio Borghi misses playmaker Matias Fernandez, whose form was vital for La Roja to qualify as Group C leader. Do Chile have what it takes to defeat Venezuela, a goal neither Brazil nor Paraguay managed to achieve during the first stage?

Colombia vs Peru will open the quarter-finals stage at the 2011 Copa America.

Colombia could be regarded as the 2011 Copa America’s best teams so far. They’ve shown some kind of consistency and progress in their form. Remarkably, the Colombians are yet to concede a goal—which explains why they are also yet to lose. It would be cruel for them to face defeat in the knock-out stages of the tournament; that’s when it counts most.
“The Colombian fans must stay trustful and calm. We are not the best, we are not the worst and we are not in the final yet,” said a cautious Falcao earlier this week.
“We have just moved into the second stage [of the Copa America] and we need to have our feet on the ground. If we want to aspire to progressing [in Argentina] we have to beat anyone.”
Argentina reached the quarter-finals of the 2011 Copa America as Group A’s runners-up with 5 points. The Albiceleste could meet Peru, Chile or Uruguay next up.

After 180 minutes of poor football, Argentina finally woke up to the cries of their angry and anxious supporters. They demolished Costa Rica 3-0 in their last group stage match to seal their passage into the quarter-finals of the 2011 Copa America.
Lionel Messi starred with a fine performance despite not scoring. Aguero clinched a brace whereas Di Maria also got his name on the scoring sheet. This left Sergio Batista proud of his team and of Messi in particular as he told the press in a post-match interview:
“He played a fantastic game. We talked a lot about the emotional and individual state of the team before the match. We needed to regain our confidence. Lionel knows how to overcome these situations.
Colombia advance to the knockouts topping their group, and set a four-point requirement for the next stage

Colombia reaches the second stage with seven points, and leaves Argentina and Costa Rica struggling to secure the last remaining place for the quarter-finals. The winner takes all this Monday in Cordoba.
Who could have expected Venezuela as Group B leader? Even if Brazil and Paraguay end up as leaders with five points, the Venezuelan squad has enough points to secure qualification.
Remember that not only the teams finishing first and second in each group advance to the quarter-finals, but also the two best-placed thirds. Anything but a victory leaves Argentina as the worst-placed third, with three points.
Considering Costa Rica lost their opening game, another defeat leaves them with three points. Four points gives automatic qualification at this point, a requirement none of the three alleged candidates (Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay) have met so far.
Colombia’s victory over Bolivia has changed the tone of Chile vs Peru. Both the Chileans and the Peruvians are subsequently guaranteed quarter-final tickets ahead of match-day 3.

For both Chile and Peru, this fixture may be great to try out new formations and give the chance to other players. But above all, the fight for Group C’s top spot is still going on. So Tuesday’s encounter could offer a great show instead of just a lame battle where both teams are rather thinking of the quarter-finals.
As of now, Chile head Group C since they’ve scored more goals than Peru. However, each side holds 4 points and a (+1) goal difference after 2 match-days. A draw will keep the Chileans above the Peruvians but both will drop to second and third respectively, should Uruguay record a 2-0 margin victory over Mexico in La Plata.
“Next game, we have to win it.” Those were the words of goal scorer Guerrero following Peru’s draw against La Celeste Olimpica. Will Mexico be the victims of the ambitious Peruvians?

Group C’s standings explain that Peru have the advantage over Mexico. In fact, the Blanquirroja recorded a vital 1-1 draw against Uruguay on Monday night.
Suddenly, it seems as if Peru’s chances of progressing into the next stage are wide open. However, only a good result against invitees Mexico in Mendoza will increase the size of Peru’s tag as one of the 2011 Copa America’s surprise packages.
Meanwhile, the story is different for the Mexicans. The country are trying to battle it out with an U-22 version of the senior national team. Losing is never an option in big tournaments but Mexico may not take their defeat to Chile on match-day 1 that bitterly.
It's been almost 30 years since Uruguay lastly defeated Peru in a Copa America

Just as Sergio Markarian's boys got back from their last training, they realized somebody had broken into their hotel and taken a significant amount of personal stuff. Apart from watches and cash, the burglars took Peru's alternative goalkeeper gloves.
According to Peru's coach, defeating Uruguay is not a matter of faith. "The attitude and the coordination on the pitch depends on the confidence of the players" stated Markarian days before the clash.
Uruguay appears to be one of the main candidates for the Copa America title. Is Peru ready to follow Bolivia's and Venezuela's example and stop La Celeste from claiming Group C's top position?
The action in Group C will open with Uruguay vs Peru before Chile and Mexico lock horns in the section’s other game.

It’s almost a disaster for Peru. They are going into their match against Uruguay with a weak squad. It’s actually the result of injuries.
No Claudio Pizarro, no Jefferson Farfan. These 2 injured key players have been excluded from Peru’s roster. Vargas, meanwhile, is yet to confirm his presence against Uruguay.
“I want to be there on Monday,” said the player according to USA Today.
“But if I can’t play, then I want to accompany my team mates at least.”
As we build up for the upcoming Copa America, we will now take you to the home of La Rojiblanca!
Home to the Inca Empire during the Pre-Colombian America times, Peru is a multiethnic nation which includes Amerindians, Europeans, Africans and Asians. The Peruvian territory is also well-known due to it's association with the Norte Chicho, which is the oldest civilization in the world. Spanish is the largest spoken language, understandably due to it's Spanish colonization era.
One unique aspect of this country is it's diverse climate. Unlike other equatorial countries, the influence of the Andes and the Humbolt Current brings out different climates in different Peruvian regions. The country also has a vast variety of economical sources with copper, gold and zinc being it's main exports.
