In Paulo Bento's press conference he said: "Our goal is to reach the quarter-finals, and then once we get there we will work to make it further."
"Holland and Denmark are potential candidates for the title and it is possible that the next European Champion could come from our group," said Paulo Bento.
Can UEFA Euro 2012 co-hosts Poland inaugurate the National Stadium Warsaw with victory over Portugal on Wednesday night?

In an interesting clash, Arsenal goalkeeper Szczesny will be up against one of the world’s sharpest forwards, Cristiano Ronaldo. There’s good news for Sebastian Boenisch who’s recovered from a terrible knee injury. The Werder Bremen defender makes his return in Poland’s national team after a year out.
For Portugal, Carlos Martins and Varela are ruled out but 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup star Nelson Oliveira could make his debut. Paulo Bento could lose or benefit from the Real Madrid trio composed of Pepe, Fabio Coentrao and Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal's starting XI.
The Ricardo Carvalho case has not affected Portugal’s team spirit ahead of tonight’s Euro 2012 qualifier away to Cyprus.

The Real Madrid defender reportedly left the Portuguese training camp earlier this week and subsequently announced his retirement from international football later the same day. Hitting back at Ricardo Carvalho’s attitude, Paulo Bento revealed that the player got angry after noticing that he wouldn’t start the match against Cyprus.
The Portugal coach then explained his unwillingness to ever recall Ricardo Carvalho to the team. In a statement at a press conference on Friday, Paulo Bento confirmed:
“As long as I am in charge, Ricardo Carvalho will never play again. It does not make any sense. The door is closed for him.”
Portuguese defender Ricardo Carvalho has been ruled out of their clash against Norway tomorrow after he aggravated a back-injury

Ricardo Carvalho will not feature for Portugal when they host Norway in their Euro 2012 Qualifying match at Lisbon tomorrow. The Real Madrid defender was already struggling with a pain in his lower back after picking it up during training last week.
Subsequently, the rumor was confirmed by Paulo Bento in a statement directed towards fans. Nevertheless, Bento stressed that his absence will not affect their tactics tomorrow.
"The absence of Carvalho will not alter our strategy, it's just less of an option for us. It will not change anything for us," Bento told the Portugal Football Federation's official website.
Norway coach Egil Olsen believes that Portugal are the best national side in the world currently but stressed that he has a plan to overcome them this weekend.

Portugal will host Norway in the Euro 2012 qualifying match this weekend and Norway coach Egil Olsen is already planning some key tactics ahead of that match in Lisbon. The Norwegians overcame Portugal 1-0 back in September last year and they also currently lead Group H by three points ahead of Paulo Bento's men.
This time around, the challenge seems pretty much harder due to Portugal's home advantage but Olsen believes that he has a definite plan to overcome a team that he hailed as the best current national side.
The rivalry of Benfica vs Porto can definitely not be matched by Tuesday’s Portugal vs Finland friendly. But Coach Paulo Bento defends his opinion of ignoring it.

Unlike England’s Fabio Capello or Germany’s Joachim Lowe have done, Portugal’s Paulo Bento has overlooked the importance of his players’ club football agendas. Even Sunday’s Benfica vs Porto match which could decide the Portuguese Liga’s title has had no impact on his squad choices for tonight’s Portugal vs Finland friendly.
Indeed, with Benfica being 13 points behind league leaders Porto, it is certainly easy to understand why Bento believes that is only a matter of time befor Porto claims the cup. So this can wait, can't it? The big gap between Benfica and Porto has considerably lowered the importance of Sunday's big match in Bento's opinion.
Can Portugal continue their resurgence under new coach Paulo Bento against an attack-minded Chile?

Paulo Bento will be looking to consolidate his encouraging start to life as Portugal coach as he prepares his team for two friendlies against Chile and Finland in the next four days.
Unmistakable signs have emerged during Bento’s tenure that he is rebuilding the Seleccao into a world force again, able to stand up to comparison next to the exciting teams that lent prestige to the country as a footballing nation throughout the first decade of the new millennium.
The former Sporting manager stepped into the breach after Carlos Queiroz’s acrimonious departure from the top job in Portugal. Just days after taking over he began to repair a Euro 2012 qualifying campaign that had started disastrously. Convincing wins over Denmark and Finland put Portugal back into the running for a place in Poland and the Ukraine, but Bento is keen not to take his eye off the ball.
Quaresma and Ventura have been called up by Coach Paulo Bento for the Argentina vs Portugal friendly. Meanwhile, striker Liedson didn’t make the cut at the public’s surprise, so Bento explained his choices.

Ex-Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari was known not to be keen to talk about non-selected players. However, Paulo Bento has a totally different approach when it comes to that and this is why he had no problem clarifying his picks through the media.
“I didn’t select Liedson but this is because we’ve gone for two strikers – Hugo Almeida and Helder Postiga,” Portugal’s Paulo Bento told reporters.
“Considering their performances, what we want is to keep a stable squad and endow the team with an identity. Liedson is not on the list through option, just like he wasn’t against Spain.”
Portugal vs Spain will see Cristiano Ronaldo and Coach Paulo Bento put to the test. This international friendly match is meant to reveal a lot concerning Portugal’s current status.
The sack of Carlos Queiroz – which was preceded by Portugal’s unimpressive showing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup – put an end to the national team’s frustrating run which begun to build itself after the departure of the retired Luis Figo. In the early moments of this embarrassing period for the former European Championship runners-up, Captain Cristiano Ronaldo was key to Portugal’s acceptable results as ex-boss Luiz Felipe Scolari managed to compensate Figo’s loss through different tactics.
The Selecção weren’t displaying the best football that any fan could dream of, but they did just enough to reach Euro 2008 with Cristiano Ronaldo emerging as the team’s top scorer in the qualifiers. But just as the star winger was expected to power Portugal to more success ahead of the competition in Switzerland and Austria, his fitness suffered a setback.
Portugal have played only one game under new coach Paulo Bento so far, but its positive outcome has got fans excited already. But ahead of the Iceland fixture, the boss has a few points to make…

It had been quite a while since Cristiano Ronaldo and the rest of his national team mates could be seen with a genuine grin during training and on the field. Portugal’s convincing 3-1 victory over Denmark last Friday seems to have dramatically boosted the confidence of the Portuguese players and fans for the rest of their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.
However, Coach Paulo Bento has warned his side to be wise as they aim to keep the momentum alive. Jornaltvs.net quoted the manager as saying:
“This isn’t the time for us to think about the future. We’ve got to think about the present. It’s true that we can breathe a bit better than before after the game against Denmark.
Ex-Sporting manager Paulo Bento was officially appointed as Portugal’s new coach on Tuesday. However, many supporters of the country’s national soccer team are unhappy about the FPF’s decision.

Jose Mourinho was most people’s number one choice although Paulo Bento always looked to be the likely person to replace Carlos Queiroz who was sacked a few weeks ago. As a manager of Sporting Lisbon, former defensive midfielder Paulo Bento led his side to win both the Portuguese Cup and the Portuguese Supercup twice.
In spite of these achievements, some Portuguese fans doubt the credibility of Portugal’s new coach who never experienced greatness in European and international football as a player. Following the news of his appointment which broke on Tuesday, comments on Portugoal.net offered more negatives than positives thoughts, with one of the statements boldly predicting:
“This is doomed for failure, and will result in some of the worst showings ever for our nation.”
