The Uruguayan champions edged their fierce rivals in a tense encounter at the legendary Centenario stadium on Thursday.

Uruguayan champions Nacional advanced to the final of the Copa Antel after edging arch-rivals Penarol 1-0 at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo on Thursday.
The only goal of the match was converted by Nacional defender Jadson Viera, when he headed home a corner-kick delivered by Alvaro Recoba in the 56th minute.
With the win, Nacional avenged their penalty shoot-out defeat to Penarol in the Copa Bimbo last week.
Both teams fielded full-strength sides to confront the highly anticipated superclasico, the biggest game on the Uruguayan soccer calendar.
Los Aurinegros maintained their composure to beat the Uruguayan champions 6-5 on penalties.

Penarol defeated crosstown rivals Nacional 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out in the first 'clasico' of the Uruguayan calendar, to reach the final of the Copa Bimbo where they will meet Palestino of Chile.
Nacional, who are coached by Argentine Marcelo Gallardo, fielded a relatively young side, compared to that of Penarol's, who fielded a full-strength side, including recent signings Fabian Estoyanoff and Luis Aguiar.
In front of 40,000 fans at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo, Nacional dominated their opponents for much of the first half, but they couldn't take advantage of the many goal-scoring opportunities which they created.
Sporting got back to winning ways in the Liga with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nacional in Lisbon.
Over 40,000 fans flocked to the Alvalade, exemplifying the new-found confidence coursing through the club.
They were rewarded with a positive first-half display. Wolfswinkel came close to scoring with a 17th-minute header, but 5 minutes later giant American centre-back Oguchi Oneywu was in the right place at the right time to nod into the net at the back post.
Nacional did not give up the ghost, and came back strongly in the second half. Mário Rondon shot wide when clean through on goal, and the Venezuelan striker then saw his close-range header well saved by Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patrício.
A bumper crowd is expected at the Alvalade on Saturday night as Sporting attempt to beat Nacional da Madeira to stay in touch with joint Liga ZON Sagres leaders, FC Porto and Benfica.

Fourteen wins in the Lisbon club’s last sixteen games, an exhilarating brand of football, and a handful of exciting talents emerging has fuelled a wave of optimism not seen at the club for several seasons.
Aided by reduced prices for the game, close to 50,000 supporters are expected to be in attendance.
One of Sporting’s star performers this season, Dutch midfielder Stijn Schaars, is suspended for the game. Along with injuries to fellow midfielders Izmailov, Rinaudo and Matias Fernandez, the door again opens for André Martins.
Alvaro Recoba's late winner against Liverpool handed Nacional their tenth Uruguayan Apertura championship on Sunday.

Nacional clinched the Uruguayan Apertura championship after edging Liverpool 1-0 at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo on Sunday. The only goal of the match was scored by former Inter Milan striker Alvaro Recoba in the 79th minute.
Marcelo Gallardo's side came into the match knowing that they needed to claim the three points in order to lift the title, but despite pushing to the attack immediately from the kick-off they failed to create decent goal-scoring opportunities in an uneventful first half.
After the break the game opened up as Nacional adopted an even more attacking-minded approach to their soccer. While they looked dangerous each time they moved up the field in numbers, they left big gaps in their midfield, allowing Liverpool to break on swift counterattacks, with nippy striker Emiliano Alfaro being a constant menace for their defense.
Corinthians lifted the Brazilian championship for the fifth time after fighting out a tense goalless draw with crosstown rivals Palmeiras on Sunday.

Brazilian giants Corinthians won their fifth Brazilian championship after fighting out a goalless draw with crosstown rivals Palmeiras at the Pacaembu stadium in Sao Paulo on Sunday. The title came on the same day as the death of Corinthians and Brazil soccer idol Socrates.
Needing only a single point to guarantee themselves of the title on the final match day of the season, Corinthians did just this in a fiery derby that saw four men sent-off. Corinthians finished the season with 71 points from 38 matches, two points clear of closest rivals Vasco da Gama, who were held by Flamengo.
The match was played at a frantic pace, with Palmeiras coming closest to earning the three points when a Fernandao header struck the crossbar in the 71st minute. It was a typical derby, but its importance multiplied, as while Corinthians needed just a point to clinch the title, Palmeiras did their utmost to ruin their party.
An injury-time penalty kick from Alvaro Recoba gave Nacional a dramatic comeback victory over arch-rivals Penarol in the Uruguayan superclasico.

Nacional came from behind to defeat arch-rivals Penarol 2-1 in a dramatic Uruguayan superclasico match played in front of over 60,000 fans at the legendary Centenario stadium in Montevideo on Sunday.
Former Inter Milan playmaker Alvaro Recoba was the hero as it was his penalty kick that gave Nacional the three points in second half injury-time. With the win Nacional climbed above Penarol into second-place of the Apertura after 13 rounds, two points behind league leaders Danubio.
Penarol pushed to the attack immediately from the kick-off, and they almost went ahead when striker Maximiliano Perez brought the ball down in the area, made space for himself and shot on goal, but his effort was brilliantly saved by Nacional goalkeeper Rodrigo Munoz.
FC Porto answered their critics with a thumping 5-0 victory over Nacional da Madeira last night.
The Dragons came into the match under pressure after the disappointing 1-1 draw against APOEL of Cyprus in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Coach Vítor Pereira rang the changes, dropping Otamendi, João Moutinho, Fredy Guarín and Kleber and the shake-up had the desired effect.
Porto, playing with far more urgency than of late, dominated from start to finish.
Defour opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a deflected shot into the roof of the net, and Walter doubled the lead shortly before the interval, converting Hulk's corner at the far post.
FC Porto go into their home match against Nacional in the unusual position (form them) of being under intense pressure.

The team were booed off the pitch after the 1-1 draw at home to APOEL Nicosia in the Champions League on Wednesday. The fans were unhappy with the result but above all the listless performance. For much of 2011/12 the Portuguese champions have been looking a far cry from the team that swept all before them at home and abroad last season.
While the loss of coach André Villas-Boas and prolific striker Falcao have hit Porto hard, Vítor Pereira has not helped himself by constantly chopping and changing the team, especially in midfield.
Fernando, João Moutinho and Fredy Guarín were all virtually undroppable last season. But the signing of Defour, together with Pereira’s early attempt to bring in Souza and the intermittently impressive showings from Fernando Belluschi, rather than constituting strength in depth, appear to have complicated matters for the coach. Up front Walter is likely to return to the starting line-up.
Since his £7M transfer from Nacional to Liverpool, defender Sebastian Coates has not captivated the public in England.

In an interview with LFC Magazine, the youngster recalled his decision to move away from his motherland. Coates, who was voted as the best young player at the 2011 Copa America, was quoted as saying:
“The biggest attraction was the challenge: to come to an unfamiliar place, a huge club, and make a name for myself. So far in my career, I have been very lucky to play for Nacional, to play in the Copa Libertadores, to win the Copa America.
“There has been a lot of success in a short period of time but I have achieved that in a place where I am most comfortable. Now, I am here, in a different country, in a different league, with different team-mates.”
Libertadores' final match will be held on Wednesday night and the Mexicans will have to defeat Inter by at least two goals to claim their first American Cup.

Guadalajara's Chivas won't be happy with only qualifying for Libertadores' final for the first time in history, and for this reason their trip to Puerto Alegre will not be taken lightly. With the defeat home on their back, Jose Luis Real will have to find a way to catch Inter off guard on Brazilian ground unless he wants to return home in shame. The Carioca squad, on the other hand, is ready to repeat 2006's glory, which stands only one step further on the road. Will they succeed?
An unexpected visitor
Chivas' captain declared during the week "We're now focused on what needs to be done. This is the most important match in our careers. We're ready". His words were meant to restore the confidence and relieve the anxiety of the Mexican players, who know they'll have to go all-in to bag a victory this Wednesday.
Inter is ready to repeat 2006's success, when they defeated Santos and lifted the American title for the last time. Chivas can write history on their own if they can handle the Brazilian fury of Inter, strengthened by the presence of players like Andres D'Alessandro and Pablo Guiñazu.

The first match of the final will be held on August 11th and both teams are confident on their strengths for the title: While the Brazilians highlight the experience and manners of his team, the Mexicans pay full attention to the energy their players are able to unleash, stunning every rival on the competition and leading the team towards the final...
