A Look Ahead to the Champions League Draw on Friday

The most ‘even’ Champions League draw will be taking place on the 16th of December.
Italy is the nation with most sides in the round of 16. Germany, Spain, Russia, England and France each are represented by two sides in the competition. Cyprus, Switzerland and Portugal are each represented by one team. All these teams have made their passages through tough groups with perhaps the exception of Barcelona and AC Milan. These two sides were drawn with Plzen and Bate, two relative novices at this level, in the group stage.

Nonetheless, Barca and Milan must be given credit for qualifying as the novices have risen this season. Whereas experienced competitors such as Manchester United, Villarreal, Porto and Valencia have gone out, the likes of Apoel Nicosia and FC Basel have progressed into the knockout stages.

The Spanish giants have not conceded a goal in Europe and they’ve taken maximum points from their first 3 matches. Olympique Lyon, meanwhile, have only scored twice so far and they are 5 points adrift Real Madrid.

“We want to defeat Olympique Lyonnais because doing so would qualify us for the next round and we'd practically be group leaders for sure,” Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho declared during the pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

In a scrappy game as it was, Bafetimbi Gomis had the final word after former Lyon play maker Karim Benzema broke Real Madrid’s barren record in terms of goals away to Les Gones.

In fact, Olympique Lyon had to thank the wood-work for saving them a couple of times in the early stages of the second period. Firstly, Cristiano Ronaldo – who has quite a good record against French teams – smashed a free-kick off the top of the post in the 49th minute. A few seconds later, defender Sergio Ramos also had his header from a corner hit the wood-work.

Lyon vs Real Madrid: We Respect Real, But Want To Win – Lyon’s Cris

Tuesday February 22 2011,
Tags: Cris, Lyon, Real Madrid, Champions League
In recent talks on the upcoming Lyon vs Real Madrid match, Brazilian defender Cris stated that Olympique Lyonnais were ready to subjugate Madrid on another occasion.
In the last 6 years, Real have not reached the Last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, and on some occasions, the 7-time French champions were the reason. Lyon—who have never lost to Los Blancos—also ended Real’s campaign on the European stage last season.

Hence, defender Cris believes his team’s historical advantage gives them more chances of succeeding against Jose Mourinho’s army tonight, regardless of the anticipated presence of Real’s superstars. Cris however rebuked the manner through which the Spanish press attempted to encourage Los Merengues to triumph in their last meeting; and as indicated by AFP, the stopper said:

“We have played Real 6 times for 3 wins and 3 draws. Each match had a different story. It’s going to be more complicated this time because Real have not gone beyond the Last 16 for 6 years.

Lyon vs Real Madrid: We Need To Break Last 16 Curse - Oezil

Tuesday February 22 2011,
Tags: Mesut Oezil, Lyon, Real Madrid, Champions League
German star Mezut Oezil has described the Olympique Lyonnais vs Real Madrid match in the Champions League tonight as a tough one, but has affirmed that all Real wanted was a victory.
Winning in France in the first leg will give Los Blancos a huge advantage in the ongoing round, as they could still rely on the Away Goals rule—in the case where things turn out to be complicated at the Bernabeu Stadium in the return leg, next month. Real Madrid have not been lucky in the Champions League’s Last 16 in the past few years, crushing out at this stage of the competition over and over again.

Despite spending well over a hundred million Euros in the 2009 summer transfer window, Los Merengues were incapable of edging past Lyon early in the Champions League’s knockout phase in the ensuing season. A change is surely needed, and tonight could produce the first part of Real’s miracle.

Olympique Lyon vs Real Madrid – Video Highlights Of The Match’s History

Tuesday February 22 2011,
Tags: Olympique Lyon, Real Madrid, UEFA Champions League
Real Madrid take on Lyon tonight and Live Soccer TV reminds you of the last 3 Olympique Lyon vs Real Madrid matches through video highlights. Remarkably, the French come well on top of Los Blancos.

Olympique Lyon have the edge over Real Madrid at the Stade de Gerland in the UEFA Champions League.Real Madrid have never beaten Olympique Lyon despite meeting the French side six times in total. Los Blancos’ miserable head-to-head history against “the Kids” has been emphasized by poor defensive statistics. Lyon have actually scored 10 goals against Madrid to clinch an overall 10-4 record.

This has been possible for the French team because of their robust achievements against the Spanish giants at the Stade de Gerland in the UEFA Champions League. They’ve hosted Real Madrid 3 times and they’ve defeated them 3 times as well. The irony, however, is that the gap between Olympique Lyon and Los Blancos decreases little by little.

The Kids triumphed 3-0 over Real Madrid in 2005 before winning 2-0 in 2006 and only 1-0 most recently. Live Soccer TV takes you back to what happened in the past Olympique Lyon vs Real Madrid UEFA Champions League matches through video highlights.

Cristiano Ronaldo Confident Of Breaking Champions League Curse “Once And For All”

Cristiano Ronaldo enters Tuesday’s Lyon vs Real Madrid match with a lot of confidence. Los Blancos have a 6-year Champions League Last 16 curse to break and Ronaldo feels that the time has come to do it...
Last season, Real Madrid came so close to putting an end to it. Like it is the case this year, they were paired with Olympique Lyon in the Round of 16. After losing the first leg 1-0 in France, Real Madrid were left with the task of winning at the Santiago Bernabeu at all cost.

In the return leg, an early goal by Cristiano Ronaldo put the home crowd on their feet. But a late equalizer from Olympique Lyon’s youngster Pjanic shattered Real Madrid’s ambitions.

Los Blancos had to find 2 more goals during the last 15 minutes of the match – something which they failed to achieve. Eventually, they crashed out from the UEFA Champions League at the Last 16 stage for the sixth year in a row.

It's Olympique Lyonnais vs Real Madrid again in the Last 16 of the UEFA Champions League and Aulas isn't really happy...
Olympique Lyon owner Jean-Michel Aulas has witnessed his team’s excellent record against Real Madrid over the past years in the Champions League. However, he has revealed that he didn’t to face Los Blancos for yet another time although last season’s Olympique Lyon-Real Madrid tie ended in favor of the French.
