The USA have booked their precious tickets for the final of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup and they’ve done it in style. Colombia, North Korea, Brazil and more recently France all fell against the mesmerizing authority of Pia Sundhage’s powerful women—led by veteran Abby Wambach, safe pair of hands Hope Solo and super influential sub Rapinoe.
Why not go down the past few weeks to see how the United States made it from Group C to the Women’s World Cup final at the Frankfurt’s Commerzbank-Arena on July 17, 2011?
Match-day 1—How the United States set the tone
It’s important to kick-off a project on a good tone and that’s exactly what the USA did on June 28 when they went head to head with Asian rivals North Korea. Patience was key to the Americans’ success as the first period of the game ended goalless.
The Americans had the better of possession as the Koreans couldn't impose their game through nothing more than 47% of the ball in total. But the USA may consider themselves "fortunate" to come out with all 3 points knowing that the score line was 0-0 at half time.It was a comfortable victory in the end for Sven Goran Eriksson’s Elephants. Yaya Toure, Romaric, and Salomon Kalou all got their name on the score sheet for a perfect score line which helped them earn nothing more than pride.
It was important for the Ivoirians to start off with intensity upfront. After all, we do know that nothing is impossible in football and that Brazil could have therefore recorded a shocking victory over Portugal at the benefit of Drogba’s side....
Cote d’Ivoire To Perform The Greatest Miracle In South Africa?
The manner in which the Elephants of Ivory Coast killed their hopes of making an impact in the ‘Group of Death’ is disappointing. They showed good strength in their opening game against Portugal. The only thing that was missing was a goal. Perhaps Didier Drogba’s lack of fitness blew things off for Cote d’Ivoire, but the reality is now revealed and has to be faced.
A boring performance, well below the one they had put against Carlos Queiroz’ men, led them to a 3-1 defeat against Brazil. It was this defeat that crashed the Elephants from heaven to the ground, and one that was hard to take for Ivory Coast and pro-African supporters. In fact, what killed off Cote d’Ivoire’s hopes more than their 3-1 defeat to Brazil was Portugal’s 7-0 goal fest against Korea DPR. It seems the gates to the knock-out stage world are closed and well locked too now.
Portugal vs Korea DPR, First Half: A Selecção Narrowly Edge Past Impressive North Koreans
With the rain pouring down mercilessly in Cape Town, the performances of both teams were expected to be affected. Still, Portugal made good progress going forward despite Korea DPR’s crowded midfield. In the 7th minute, Ricardo Carvalho almost found the breakthrough with a smashing header from a corner which crashed against the post. Hugo Almeida also thought to have come close minutes later but the referee whistled for offside.
Surprisingly, it was the North Koreans who created the most genuine attempt on goal through Jong-Hyok Cha’s 11th minute impressive long range strike. Portugal’s goalkeeper Eduardo acrobatically stretched himself wide trying to clear the ball, but was happy to see it go away for a goal kick. He was nearly tested again when Korea DPR broke forward for the second time in the game. Unfortunately for the Asians, Tae-Se Jong’s flick was poor enough not to trouble the keeper.
Portugal To Fight And Avoid Falling Into Korea DPR’s Pit
For Portugal, overcoming the trap of underdogs North Korea is an imperative task. A Selecção drew goalless against Cote d’Ivoire on Match-day One only to increase the importance of Monday’s encounter against the Asians. Anything else than an expected victory will inflict a lot of anxiety on Portuguese fans as the team’s final group match will be against tournament favorites Brazil.
Midfielder Raul Mereiles assured Portuguese supporters of the squad’s awareness concerning the significance of the Korea DPR match.
“The game is of great importance for us. North Korea will play against us just like they did against Brazil. We watched a bit of that game. We know that they are very strong in defense. They have ten players behind the ball. We are prepared. We will work to overcome this defensive wall and win.”
Ugly football, Brazil’s technique at the 2010 FIFA World Cup
The match between Brazil and North Korea was probably the less amusing one of the 2010 World Cup competition until now, as both sides made big mistakes, and were very inefficient in front of goal. Especially in the first half, the CONMEBOL champions were deeply poor; with a bunch of shots which flew wide, and bad passes.
Brazil stole 2 second-half goals on 55 and 72 minutes, but JI Yun Nam took a consolation for his country on 89 minutes. This disappointed most Brazilian fans back at home, nevertheless, Coach Dunga and his soldiers didn’t seem to be much bordered by their display.
Korea DPR – the country, the football
It is officially called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, but it can also be referred to as North Korea. Around 24 million people inhabit this East Asian state which has a heavy history based on politics and militarization.
Worldwide, Korea DPR aren’t portrayed as a pacific nation with many branding it as a country under the totalitarian Stalinist dictatorship. But at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the North Koreans will want to prove how much respect the world owes them actually.
The Chollima, as the national team is known, don’t have a humiliating history of football behind them – neither at the continental level nor on the international stage. More than forty years ago, they created an impact as they reached the quarter-finals of the 1966 World Cup which was eventually won by England.
Group G – the favoritesWhen you look at Group G, which is made of Brazil, Cote d’Ivoire, Korea DPR, and Portugal, it is obvious that the two names which will emerge as favorites are the two rivals – Brazil and Portugal.
Brazil
They are...
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will have to face South Korea in the group stages of tournament, so warming up against the Korea Republic’s Asian rivals Korea DPR should offer a lot of experience. In the same way, the North Koreans may take lessons from Sunday’s game against African giants Nigeria ahead of their ‘Group of Death’ battle against the Elephants of La Cote d’Ivoire.
Nigeria failed to clinch victory in their previous friendly matches lately. A 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia followed with some improvement in terms of performance against Colombia. Still, the result was only a 1-1 draw. The Super Eagles have set the bar of expectations very high.
They are anxiously awaiting their 2010 World Cup opener against Argentina. For now, their task is to prepare and they know that the match against North Korea will present their last opportunity to do so.
Guess which teams have made the cut in LiveSoccerTV.com's short list. There is a country from Africa, one from Asia, and another one from South America joining this top five small teams group dominated in numbers by two European participants.
1) Slovenia
We start to take a closer look at the tiny Central European nation that surprised the continent’s emerging force Russia in the play-off matches to qualify for the finals of 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Slovenia didn’t only realize a dream when they reached their second every World Cup finals back in November last year, they crumbled mountains at the public’s surprise! What makes the trick for them is the combination of their technical passing game, their alert defense, and above all their strong mentality as underdogs.
Their decision of playing the North Koreans was reportedly based on the fact that the Greeks are aiming to prepare against an opposition similar to South Korea against whom they'll be playing in Group B. Greece had an awful campaign in the 1994 World Cup where they were drawn with Argentina and Nigeria but then crashed out with no point at all.
Greece vs Korea DPR should offer knowledge to both sides who will have moutains to overcome during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Once again, Greece will meet Argentina and Nigeria whereas Korea DPR will face the great task of upseting favorites Brazil and strong sides Portugal and Cote d'Ivoire.
