Arsenal scored three second half goals to move past Ipswich Town and into the Carling Cup Final.

Ipswich held out for an hour with a brave defensive effort, before Nicklas Bendtner opened the scoring with an excellent strike in the 61st minute. Laurent Koscielny then gave Arsenal a 2-1 aggregate lead with a headed goal from an Andrey Arshavin corner.
Arshavin created the game sealing goal in the 77th minute when he played in Cesc Fabregas after good work on the edge of the area, and the Spanish midfielder made it 3-0 on the night with a neat finish.
Ipswich arrived at the Emirates stadium defending a 1-0 lead from the first leg, and defended well to keep Arsenal out in the first half. The Tractor Boys were comfortable for the opening 15 minutes, but needed goalkeeper Matron Fulop to save well from Fabregas as the half went on.
Arsenal will be looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit when they host Ipswich Town in the Carling Cup Semi-Final Second Leg.

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas was critical of the tactics of Ipswich in the first leg at Portman Road. Fabregas described the ploy used by Ipswich as a mixture of “long ball” and “rugby” when talking to BBC Sport.
Fabregas and his teammates will likely face a similar approach again, and must accept it and break down Ipswich if they hope to make a Cup Final and have a shot at ending their five year trophy drought.
Arsene Wenger was less quick to make excuses, and will be expecting
better of Fabregas and his teammates. Wenger described the 1-0 first leg defeat as “naïve.” Wenger did tell BBC Sport he was confident the Gunners will turn it around in the home leg, though he will be rotating his squad to do so.
Arsenal were surprisingly humbled by a goal to nil at the Portman Road in the Carling Cup against Ipswich on January 12, but Cesc Fabregas has yet to accept Arsenal’s defeat as a fair one.

The Gunners had most of the possession, and they visibly appeared as the better side. At the end of the day though, it was the minnows who got the advantage in the first leg of their semifinals encounter; but Captain Cesc Fabregas is far from seeing Ipswich’s victory over Arsenal as a deserved one.
“I don’t know if it is (a) long ball or (if) it is a rugby kick, but it worked for them (Ipswich),” Fabregas was quoted saying by Telegraph. “In England, there a lot of teams who play like that and it works for them.
“They create chances like that, and it is their football. Arsenal made the football, but the other team refused to play football… they were lucky to score in a long ball.
Ipswich Town produced a stunning 1-0 won over Arsenal in the first leg of the Carling Cup Semi-Finals.

Tamas Priskin scored a late winner that allowed Ipswich to mark a remarkable turnaround in fortunes in the space of three days. On Sunday they were beaten 7-0 in the FA Cup, but managed to turn it around and triumph 1-0 over Premier League title contenders Arsenal.
Arsenal were held to a 1-1 tie by Leeds United at the weekend, and produced another disappointing performance against a Championship team here.
With new manager Paul Jewell watching from the stands, Ipswich successfully used a five man midfield to close space and make it difficult for Arsenal to keep possession.
Arsenal started quickly and had an early chance when Cesc Fabregas just failed to connect with an Andriy Arshavin cross. The Gunners continued to pressure, and almost forced an own goal when Marton Fulop had to react well to keep out a wayward Carlos Edwards header.
Arsenal are in contention to avoid a 6-year title drought. The Gunners’ Carling Cup semi-final clash against Ipswich Town tonight is a match that they’ve vowed not to take lightly.

Interestingly, however, manager Arsene Wenger has downplayed the obsession of achieving silverware. Speaking to The Mirror, he explained that Arsenal’s failure to lift a single trophy since the past 5 years had not driven him mad.
“It is not as much of a mental block for us as it appears in the media and as it is for supporters,” Arsene Wenger explained.
“There is a big bond from what you read every day and then, it gets into your brain. Of, course, I want to end it [that title drought].
“But, being professional isn’t to look at the trophies but to focus on the quality of our performance.”
Arsenal will make it 6 years in a row without silverware if they fail to win anything this season. However, Bendtner believes that the Ipswich Town vs Arsenal Carling Cup match could be the source of other ideas.

On Wednesday night, Arsenal will clash against Ipswich in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final tie. The Gunners have a great chance of progressing onto the final and eventually win the competition as lower teams West Ham United and Birmingham City contest the other semi-final tie.
Since their 2005 FA Cup triumph over Manchester United, Arsenal haven’t achieved cup glory. Ahead of tomorrow’s fixture, Nicklas Bendtner is hopeful for a better future. The Denmark international told Clubcall:
“We need to make sure that we go there [against Ipswich] and that we keep our run going. For me, we’ve got to get to the final of the Carling Cup.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is under some pressure for lifting no silverware at all in the last five years, this competition provides Wenger with an opportunity to end that barren run. After being held to a draw by Championship outfit Leeds United at the weekend in the FA Cup, the Gunners will be hoping to fire their way to a Wembley Stadium final in this tie.
Ipswich will be led by Ian McParland, who will be taking charge of his last game as caretaker manager before Paul Jewell takes the reins. McParland has took charge for a brutal pair of opponents, with this game coming hot on the heels of Sunday’s 7-0 FA Cup demolition at the hands of Chelsea.

Cardiff City sign another striker in their quest for promotion to the Premier League, as Sheffield United's Gary Speed makes his first signing for the Blades.

Queens Park Rangers
Championship leaders, Queen’s Park Ranger’s manager, Neil Warnock is lamenting the loss of Ipswich Town’s Jon Walters to Premier League side Stoke City. Warnock told BBC Radio London, "I think we're miles away. I told the directors we're a sixth to tenth position team.”
He continued, "We need two good strikers but we lost one of them to the Premier League. We thought we had him last week. It's disappointing as Walters has been my number one target now for a long time."
Cardiff City
In contrast to QPR, Cardiff City have no shortage of strikers. As well as having the division’s top scorer in Jay Boothroyd, the Bluebirds have Michael Chopra, Peter Whittingham and Craig Bellemy in the squad, and have just signed Wolves’ striker Andy Keogh on a season long loan.
Dave Jones the Bluebirds boss has also added, Seyi Olofinjana, Danny Drinkwater, Jason Koumas, Lee Naylor and Tom Heaton to the side this summer so will have to shuffle his pack if he wants to keep them all happy.
However, it looks likely that Ross McCormack will be heading out of the club, with Leeds United and Hull City the favorites to sign the talented young striker.
