Los Catrachos will play El Salvador away in San Salvador and only a victory will give them the chance to claim the third spot in the unique group.
At the top of the table, the United States and Mexico have booked their tickets for the finals of the World Cup next summer.
At the foot of the standings, it is definitely all over for both Trinidad & Tobago and El Salvador. Meanwhile, the battle in the middle of the table between...
Honduras
Two defeats in September obviously didn’t help Honduras in their campaign. They now seat third behind the leaders USA and Mexico.
As things stand, Honduras are just inside the automatic qualification zone above fourth-placed Costa Rica.
According to Wigan Athletic’s Figueroa, his country’s hopes of reaching its first World Cup finals in over twenty-four years are well alive.
El Tri are currently experiencing sweet and memorable moments under Atletico de Madrid’s former manager Javier Aguirre. The newly crowned Gold Cup champions are definitely finding their form again as one of the region’s top teams.
After thrashing Costa Rica 3-0 last Saturday, Mexico jumped onto third in the six-team table whereas Costa Rica slipped from first to fourth.
Still, the Mexicans find themselves behind the new leaders USA and then Honduras which they’ll host on Wednesday.
Chances are still open to Trinidad and Tobago
With four matches remaining in the qualifiers, many may see Trinidad and Tobago with no realistic opportunity to reach the finals of the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.
But mathematically, the possibilities are still there for the Soca Warriors to make their second consecutive appearance in the planet’s biggest sport tournament, the World Cup.
Both already met in the second round of the tournament and the Yankees run 2-0 victors. Will there be a repeat of this story or will Los Catrachos succeed in humbling the Gold Cup’s defending champions?
Honduras surely reached the semis on a controversial tone with Walter Martinez’s 35th minute penalty making the difference against Canada. With the political crisis currently existing in Honduras, the national football team might symbolize Thursday’s hot clash against the USA as a game for peace. Predictably, the importance of that encounter will be of a greater significance than much of Hondura’s previous games against the USA.
Their key to success: defense. A clean sheet against Jamaica and El Salvador were vital for the Canadians who then conceded two goals against Costa Rica in the third round. Nevertheless, a draw in that game saw them book their place in the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup where they will now face favorites Honduras.
It was another story for Los Catrachos as they made it through to the next stage of the competition. After losing 2-0 to rivals USA, Honduras were left in a tricky position to qualify for the quarters. But Grenada succumbed to an inevitable 4-0 defeat against Honduras whereas Haiti were held by the Yankees. Eventually, Honduras qualified from Group B second best behind the United States of America.
After suffering a 2-0 defeat to the USA whereas Haiti conquered Grenada 2-0 on that same day, Honduras have some work to do if they want to ensure themselves a place in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Grenada are definitely out of the Gold Cup. A 4-0 loss to the USA followed by a 2-0 defeat against Haiti in the second round meant that the challenge was over for the Spice Boys.
Therefore, they’ll have nothing to play for but pride when they clash against Honduras. Grenada were predictable losers in the Gold Cup but ironically, they could have a lot of impact on the fortunes of favorites Honduras.
It is always disappointing to open a game with an early goal and then go on to loose in the end… This is what happened when Los Catrachos travelled to the United States of America on July 6.
Carlos Costly scored after only five minutes to give the visitors a boost. But this didn’t kill the Yankees’ hopes of winning the encounter.
Landon Donovan scored from the spot with two minutes before half time to give the USA a desire equalizer. In the second half, another Carlos – but Bocanegra, not Costly – headed the ball home in a particular manner to seal the victory for the USA.
As campaigns for qualification to the world cup are on hold, the Americans sit one place above Honduras in CONCACAF’s group table.
A third place finish in the 2001 Copa America championship and a string of impressive results have made Honduras part of the tournament’s favorites.
In 1991, Los Catrachos managed to go all the way to the final of the Gold Cup tournament. They qualified as leaders of their group, which included the likes of Mexico, in an emphatic way. These old days record Honduras’ 5-0 thumping victory over Jamaica and 4-2 demolition of Canada in the group stages.
Honduras went past Costa Rica in the semifinals, but couldn’t see out the United States in the final. After 120 minutes without a single goal, the match had to go down to penalties. Honduras lost 4-3 in the end. It was a disappointment for Honduras to lose in the final, but their bravery was all the same undisputable. In 2005, they participated in the Gold Cup for the seventh time in eight attempts and came third.
This victory injected some much-needed fire to Honduras’ burning hopes of reaching the World Cup finals. They may well repeat this wonderful performance with a good result against La Selecta.
On paper, Honduras are tipped as favorites to win against El Salvador – who could only draw goalless on March 31st in a friendly match against a Jamaican side deprived of a real coach.
Honduras, who meet rampant side USA on June 6, will hope that this visit to the United States won’t exhaust them too much ahead of their qualifier against El Salvador at the Francisco Morazan Stadium.
The Yankees stunned El Salvador on March 28 with a spirited comeback, rising from 2-0 down after 72 minutes to level 2-2 with only three minutes of normal time remaining. The United States then went on to trample Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 on April 1st, thanks to Jozy Altidore’s hat-trick. These two results, which kept the USA at the top of the CONCACAF qualifying group with seven points, have by all means revealed the true side of the Yankees’ strength in mentality. This is a united team where belief and determination to reach the skies are two living notions.
USA’s captain, Bocanegra, praised the efforts of the country’s national team while speaking to Fifa.com: “We have won our two home games (against Mexico then Trinidad & Tobago) but we were disappointed with the draw in El Salvador. It just shows that on the world stage, the supposed smaller countries are not easy to play against.”
