Sporting vs Athletic Bilbao: Iberian challenge once again in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals

Thursday April 19 2012,
Tags: Sporting Lisbon, Athletic Bilbao
On Thursday Apr 19, Sporting Clube de Portugal meet Athletic Club Bilbao at 8.05 pm at Estádio de Alvalade XXI in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals first leg.
Last season, there were four Iberian teams in the semi-finals, and the final was totally Portuguese. This season, Spanish sides will certainly try to achieve the same goal. Sporting’s mission is to prevent this historic achievement from happening.

To fulfill the task, Sporting has to maintain their winning strike. In fact, since Ricardo Sá Pinto took charge of the team in mid-February, Sporting have recorded eight victories in a row. They have managed to score 13 goals and concede only one, a penalty in the last home match against FC Metalist Kharkhiv.

Tags: Bayern München, Real Madrid
The Champions League has brought together two teams embedded in the history of football who share perhaps the most intense and bitter rivalry in the history of the competition.
They share eleven European cups in between them; they are historically the best two teams their respective nations have ever produced; the ambassador of this year’s tournament Paul Breitner featured for both these clubs. And above all, they form the ‘El Classico’ of European football. When Bayern München and Real Madrid step out on the pitch on the 17th of March, the occasion will truly be absolutely spectacular.

When Michel Salgado in his last years as a Real Madrid player was asked which team he would like to play in the Champions League knock out stage, he had simply answered that he would be glad to play any team but Bayern. Bayern is called ‘La Bestia Negra’ in Madrid. That phrase roughly translates to: ‘The Black Beast.’

Barcelona’s players are expected to respond to Pep Guardiola’s call for focus so Bayer might have very little room to stun the hosts. Coach Robert Dutt is fully aware of his team’s deadly situation.

“There are lots of things that worry me about facing Barcelona. I have watched hundreds of Barcelona games and they always have very high ball possession,” the Bayer man declared at the pre-match press conference.

Where to watch El Clasico 2012: Real Madrid vs Barcelona, Copa del Rey 2011-12 Quarter-Finals

Tuesday January 17 2012,
Tags: Real Madrid, Barcelona, El Clasico, Copa Del Rey
The first Clasico of 2012 takes place on January 18th as the two big spanish clubs clash prematurely in the 2011-12 Copa Del Rey quarter-finals.

Copa del Rey - Quarter Final - real Madrid vs barcelonaRevised - Tuesday January 17, 2012 @ 23:39PM.

Global eyes will once again be on the two spanish giants as Real Madrid and FC Barcelona clash once again in the Quarter-Finals of the 2011-12 Copa del Rey.

The first of the two quarter-final legs takes place in Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 4:00PM (EST). FC Barcelona will be looking to redeem themselves after losing this competition to Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final last year. They will also be looking to make a bold statement about their title aspirations since they find themselves 5 points behind Los Blancos in the La Liga championship.

This match comes at a critical time when Real Madrid and Barca are underpeforming as was proven this weekend by unconvincing displays by both teams. Jose Mourinho was able to overturn his side's title threatening 1-0 deficit in Mallorca late in the game whereas Pep Guardiola's men fought hard to overcome a 2-2 score late in their game against Real Betis, which happened to be the only goals conceded at the Camp Nou in the current La Liga competition this season. The Cules were able to return to business as usual at the Camp Nou by winning 4-2 later on in the game.

Big Manchester City vs Liverpool clash adds to Carling Cup semifinals excitement

Sunday January 8 2012,
Tags: Manchester City, Liverpool, Cardiff City, Crystal Palace
So Manchester City are out of the FA Cup. Expect the Citizens to pour their anger on Liverpool in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup.

Will Liverpool encounter troubles away to Manchester City again? For the second time already this year, Manchester City and Liverpool will clash at the Etihad Stadium. The Blues hammered the Merseyside Reds 3-0 in both sides’ latest meeting. Midfielder Gareth Barry received a second-half red card but Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and James Milner all inscribed their names on the scoring sheet as the visitors produced virtually nothing from their huge time of ball possession.

This result helped Manchester City strengthen their authority at the top of the table despite the challenges posed by second-placed Manchester United and third-placed Tottenham Hotspur. The gap between City and Liverpool is currently of 14 points in the English Premier League but this statistic will probably not count during the Carling Cup semifinal tie.

Sergio Aguero’s late winning goal earned Manchester City a 1-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last night.
The result continues City’s record of having not lost a domestic game so far this season, and ended a 10 game unbeaten run for the Gunners.

City started the game with an aggressive mentality, and went close after 10 minutes when winger Adam Johnson cut inside and fired his shot just over the bar.

The Gunners went up the other end and created a chance only a minute later when Francis Coquelin sent over a dangerous cross, and Park Chu-Young turned it towards goal only to be denied by City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon.

Pantilimon was called into action again soon after when he tipped a long range Alex Oxade-Chamberlain effort around the goalpost.

The U-20 World Cup competition, which was founded in 1977, has seen countries like Argentina, Brazil, Spain and Germany among others top the best performances list. This only makes it hard for one to question the success of those countries’ senior national teams or senior footballers.

Impossible is nothing as USA meet France in the Women’s World Cup semi-finals

Tuesday July 12 2011,
Tags: Hope Solo, Abby Wambach
Is there a better moment than the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup for USA’s Hope Solo and co to rule the planet? Brazil have been ousted. France, here come the Americans!
The United States actually did the impossible against Brazil, which explains why hero Wambach still cannot believe how they managed to book a semi-final meeting against France. Her injury-time equalizer in extra-time turned things around in perhaps the most fashionable manner one could have ever imagined.

“I literally can't believe what happened. It's probably the most emotional moment of my life,” said an ecstatic Wambach to FIFA.com. At any other random moment, Rapinoe might have never been able to bend in such a wonderful cross from inside the midfield area and Wambach might have never been able to make a perfect jump and a perfect header to send the ball home.

2011 Copa America: Colombia, Chile, Venezuela and Peru Reach The Quarter-Finals

Monday July 11 2011,

Colombia advance to the knockouts topping their group, and set a four-point requirement for the next stage
Colombia reaches the second stage with seven points, and leaves Argentina and Costa Rica struggling to secure the last remaining place for the quarter-finals. The winner takes all this Monday in Cordoba.

Who could have expected Venezuela as Group B leader? Even if Brazil and Paraguay end up as leaders with five points, the Venezuelan squad has enough points to secure qualification.

Remember that not only the teams finishing first and second in each group advance to the quarter-finals, but also the two best-placed thirds. Anything but a victory leaves Argentina as the worst-placed third, with three points.

Considering Costa Rica lost their opening game, another defeat leaves them with three points. Four points gives automatic qualification at this point, a requirement none of the three alleged candidates (Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay) have met so far.
