Australia – Players and Coach Decisions
“Everyone in the starting team is under pressure,” this is something Australia defender Scott Chipperfield declared after the Socceroos’ setback against Germany. Indeed, Coach Pim Verbeek was pounced by home fans for fielding in an old team lacking of pace and strength in their country’s encounter against the DFB Eleven.
Coach Verbeek admitted afterward that he will surely open the door to his young players in his next game against Ghana in Group D. Ghana were described as an efficient, powerful and rapid side in their 1-0 victory over Serbia, and eventually, utilizing the weaknesses of old Australian players could cost the Socceroos more than they have.
Maradona's aggressive layout worked wonders against the Asiatic team, who were forced to wait for Argentina's advance without real opportunities to worry Sergio Romero. Juan Sebastian Veron's absence could hardly be felt thanks to Maxi Rodriguez, who made everything look easy in the midfield. Carlos Tevez was the man of the match, leading the advance, moving from left to right to join Di Maria or Messi depending on the circumstances. Park Ji Sung's expertise was not enough to earn Korea a place within the best sixteen. Only a loose victory over Nigeria could secure their ticket for the next stage... Will they make it?
South Africa, France, Mexico, and Uruguay compose a table where there are actually no hot favorites and no defined underdogs. Still, they can be separated in sections.
Group A – the favorites at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South AfricaIt’s only after some kind...
Can Argentina be the 2010 FIFA World Cup’s first team to reach the Round of 16?
Argentina won their first game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup by beating Nigeria 1-0 following a goal from Gabriel Heinze. As a result, they are second in the table behind Korea Republic on goal difference. Nevertheless, if they get 3 more points this morning against the Asians, they will be jumping into the knockout phase, and hence, they will be making history by becoming the first team in the 2010 FIFA World Cup to automatically get into the knockout phase with 6 points on match-day 2.
Argentina will need to make great efforts to make things happen, and in view of the vital fact that Korea Republic scored 2 goals and kept a clean sheet in their opening encounter against Greece, the Argentina vs Korea Republic game is set to be eye-catching. Can the mighty Albicelestes live up to expectations? This is what we are yet to know; nonetheless, if ever they suffer a setback, then it will be their Asian opponents who will be making history.
It was to expect to see these two squads at the top of the group, but this situation might change its course upon this match, in which one of the candidates will face an Asiatic beast, lead by Manchester's Park Ji Sung to the top of the positions table. Maradona will introduce a single modification from the last game, to preserve Juan Sebastian Veron for future matches. Maxi Rodriguez will take his place, allowing Di Maria to assume a creative position. Speed vs Wits, who will get half a ticket for the next round?
Group B - The favorites at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa
Argentina
The South Americans are the team in Group B with the most chances of progressing to the next round of the tournament, despite their imperfections. Los Albicelestes showed real struggle in their qualification campaign for the 2010 World Cup, but vital wins toward the end of the process sent them to the promise land in South Africa. With their names stamped in the finals, the Argentines now have high hopes of showing their fierce side, which of course they could do through the likes of their world-class players. The group of men appointed to uplift the Argentina team in a heroic manner include reigning FIFA World Player of the Year Lionel Messi, Manchester City star Carlos Tevez, and midfield maestro Juan Veron. With the type of players that Los Albicelestes have, it is understandable that Maradona's side will be tipped as clear favorites to progress from Group B.
Nigeria – The country, the football
The Federal Republic of Nigeria, better known as Nigeria, is a West African country which is bordered by Benin, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger. Its coasts are also stretched out to the Gulf of Guinea, and to the Atlantic Ocean.
Nigeria – which has a total area of around 973,768 km2 – is the most populated territory on the African continent, and it is globally ranked in 8th position with an estimated population of about 154,729,000 people.
Greece – The country, the football
Greece, also referred to as the Hellenic Republic, is a country situated in the southeastern part of Europe. It is bordered by Albania, the Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Its population is said to be around 11,260,400 people, and its size has an estimation of 131,990 km2.
The Greek national football team – known by the nickname “The Pirate Ship”, or “The Galanoleyki” – has been eclipsed by several other big teams in Europe over the years, having qualified only twice in the finals of the FIFA World Cup. Among their greatest moments in the sport, however, was when they emerged as European champions in 2004, after defeating favorites France in the semis, and hosts Portugal in the final of the tournament.
Korea Republic – The country, the football
South Korea, officially referred to as the Republic of Korea or simply Korea, is an Asian country located in the east of the continent. Being situated in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, the territory’s neighboring countries are China, Japan, and North Korea.
Korea’s capital Seoul emerges as the second largest metropolitan city in the world. Its population is estimated to be made of around 48,379,392 inhabitants all living within a total area of about 100,140 km2.
The Korea Republic national football team – also called “Red Devils”, “Tigers of Asia”, or “Taegeuk Jeonsa" – is regarded as Asia’s most successful team, having qualified 8 times for the FIFA World Cup in all, and reaching the tournament’s semifinals in 2002.
Argentina – The country, the football
The Argentine Republic, popularly known as Argentina, is among the top 10 largest territories in the world. Having 23 provinces – and a self-directed city (Buenos Aires) – Argentina's land is the biggest among Spanish-speaking countries, with an estimated total area of 2,766,890 km2.
The South American giant country ranks 33rd in the world when it comes to reckoning the population, as its inhabitants are believed to surpass the number of 40,000,000. In Argentina, freedom of religious faith is a characteristic granted by their Constitution. However, Roman Catholicism continues to be the major religion, being practiced by over 70% of Argentina’s residents.
Like almost everywhere on the planet, football appears to be Argentina’s favorite sport, and their love for the game might partly come from the fact that their national football team – known as the Albicelestes (White and Sky blue), or La Selección (The Selection) – is one of the most successful teams in the world.
Uruguay's victory over South Africa has completely changed the perspective of Maestro Tabarez's regarding their future in the competition. A loose victory 3-0 embedded the players with a new spirit that will be determinant to face their Mexican brothers next week. Reaching the stage of sixteen with their goal intact will be a second goal for the Celestes, confident this will be Uruguay's return to the most challenging football of the world. The Bafana Bafana, with one foot outside their own land will have a test of fire against the Gallic warriors.
Ugly football, Brazil’s technique at the 2010 FIFA World Cup
The match between Brazil and North Korea was probably the less amusing one of the 2010 World Cup competition until now, as both sides made big mistakes, and were very inefficient in front of goal. Especially in the first half, the CONMEBOL champions were deeply poor; with a bunch of shots which flew wide, and bad passes.
Brazil stole 2 second-half goals on 55 and 72 minutes, but JI Yun Nam took a consolation for his country on 89 minutes. This disappointed most Brazilian fans back at home, nevertheless, Coach Dunga and his soldiers didn’t seem to be much bordered by their display.
Calm, cool and collected looked Bielsa upon his team's victory. "Our goal is to get through to the next stage and not to break any records" he said. This triumph was the first Chilean one in almost 50 years, and it was made clear some signs of rennaissance are taking place in the squad. Jean Beausejour showed he can be a solid alternative in the last meters, making his weight in Honduras' area count.
Uruguay and South Africa will hold the second match of their group knowing that every single point will matter to advance to the next stage. Diego Forlan's squad had a very disappointing beginning in the competition, as their supposedly unstoppable offense had many problems making its way against France's packed back line. South Africa confirmed their strategy 4-2-3-1 can offer deadly counterattacks and for that reason most of the second half they dominated the game against Mexico. Their lack of experience against strikers of International football proved lethal against the Mexicans: something will have to change as Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan can prove deadly if given any space. Half a ticket for the Knockouts will be given to the winner, will the host stop Charrua's advance?
Latin American's brotherhood will temporarily be forgot be these two combatants, as both Chile and Honduras are part of one of the toughest groups around. Having never faced each other in a world championship, their realities are completely different: Honduras showed their lack of experience will be their main enemy in the fields, particularly considering David Suazo is nos yet fully recovered for the match, seriously weakening it's team offensive. Marcelo Bielsa and his reds need a victory to boost their confidence and claim their ticket for the next stage... will they make it?
Spain and Chile are regarded as the group’s “Big Guys” despite the European champions taking the upper hand. Now Honduras and Switzerland somehow look overshadowed by the so-called favorites.
Group H – The favorites at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa
Spain
La Roja are aware that they have all it takes to rule Group H, and probably, win the World Cup. Still, they seem to show good signs of psychology by disallowing complaisance to get them distracted. The Spanish are surrounded by strong-minded countries who are all aiming for a place in the knockout phase of the 2010 World Cup, and this is what makes it harder for the Euro 2008 champions to feel relax in their group.
Nonetheless, the bronze medalists of the 2009 Confederations Cup are said to be in the best of shapes, shining through some of the world’s biggest stars, among which lie David Villa, Fernando Torres, and a bunch of other players. Getting a maximum of 9 points in Group H will certainly be a must for Coach Vicente del Bosque, who looks poised to positively change Spain’s history in the tournament and bring his country their first World Cup trophy ever.
Chile – The country, the football
The Republic of Chile, often referred to as Chile, is a very thin South American country in terms of shape on the geographical map. It is located on the southern eastern part of the continent; between the Andes mountains, and the Pacific Ocean. It borders Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and the Drake Passage.
The Chilean territory also covers nearby islands such as Juan Fernández, Salas y Gómez, Desventuradas and Easter Island; therefore, the country’s net area is said to be around 756,950 km2, containing about 16,928,870 people. Just like the Spanish national football team, the Chilean national side is called “La Roja”, which means “The Red One” in English. Chile have not been performing so well in the FIFA World Cup, having been unsuccessful to participate in the tournament in 2002 and 2006.
Honduras – The country, the football
Honduras – officially known as the Republic of Honduras – is a country situated in Central America. The Spanish-speaking country is bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, the Gulf of Fonseca, the Gulf of Honduras, and the Caribbean Sea.
Honduras’ total area is estimated to be of 112,492 km2, and its territory takes in over 7,800,000 people.
The country's national football team – also known as Los Catrachos, La Bicolor (meaning “The Double-Colored” in English), or La H – experienced a great improvement recently in the sport. They even claimed the third position of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, as well as the third place of the UNCAF Nations Cup - all during the year of 2009.
Switzerland – The country, the football
Switzerland – officially known as the Swiss Confederation – is a country located in the western part of the European continent. Its neighboring countries are Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein.
Switzerland does not possess a vast territory, and it is ranked in 136th position in the world with a total area of about 41,284 km2. When it comes to estimating the entire population of the country, Switzerland comes in 94th position according to a 2009 census, as it is said to contain a little bit more than 7.7 million people.
The country co-hosted the European Championship with Austria in 2008, but the Swiss national football team – which is nicknamed “Schweizer Nati” in German, and “La Nati” in French – couldn’t qualify for the tournament’s knockout stages due to two consecutive winless matches in the group stage.
