Dimitar Berbatov has had so many ups and downs in his Manchester United career so far but he will definitely remember this season for a very long time. Productivity has been Berba's contribution this season and his 20 goals in the Premier League speaks for himself.
A solid Manchester United side—inspired by the great works of Chicharito, Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs—honoured the colours of the Red Devils earlier in midweek as Schalke experienced an embarrassing 2-0 defeat in Europe.
The atmosphere has changed at Manchester United. It just needed two defeats in two crucial games for that to happen. First, Chelsea’s blue sea flooded the Red Devils at the Bridge. Then came Jamie Carragher’s Liverpool who expanded the pool of Manchester United’s miseries in controversial fashion.
Liverpool and Man United are without doubt two of the greatest clubs in England. Their rivalry has long been a huge characteristic of British football, and along with El Clasico and Italy’s Milan derby, clashes between the two Premier League giants are among the world’s most followed soccer encounters.
Both teams face each other again in less than 24 hours, and this time, we go back to 2008 to look at all the battles between the titans since then. Readers must nonetheless note that video highlights shown below only concern clashes related to the EPL.
Liverpool 2-1 Manchester United: 13 September 2008
This match is one not to forget. A fierce Carlos Tevez first put Manchester United in front after only three minutes thanks to a nice movement by Dimitar Berbatov; but, but an own goal mid-way through the first half from Wesley Brown rudely destabilized the Red Devils’ team.
With several tactical mistakes from Coach Sir Alex Ferguson, there was no way the visitors were going to make a comeback. Eventually, it was substitute Ryan Babel who scored the winner for Liverpool, only to give the hosts a lucky 2-1 victory at Anfield.
Edwin van der Sar
The Manchester United goalkeeper is not as good as Petr Cech in terms of statistics for the number of saves and goals conceded. Nonetheless, even though he nears an average of a goal per match in the Premier League following 23 goals allowed in 25 starts, Van der Sar is still a quality goalkeeper. Edwin has faced the Blues a number of times in his career, and he is well aware of the threats they can pose in attack. His instant saves and control inside the 6-yard box are attributes that can frustrate almost any forward. Beating him therefore often requires mistakes from his own mates in defense.
Patrice Evra
Evra is almost as good in defense as he is in attack. He can constantly be seen on the wings supporting his team’s front—and it is his aggression, his pace, and his flowing movements on the field which make it so difficult for opposing sides to contain him. When he is not tackling, he is pressuring on the attack. It is even needless to say that his power will be of great use for Coach Alex Ferguson against Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge.
1) Manchester United vs Liverpool: What Do Their English Premier League Statistic Reveal?
Striker Dimitar Berbatov stressed the importance of a victory for his side tonight as last weekend’s biggest winners Chelsea arguably look to be the English Premier League’s fiercest title contenders.
“They [Chelsea] are likely to be our main rivals for the title. The [Community Shield] victory definitely gave everyone – the players, the staff, and the fans – a big lift,” Berbatov explained to United Review as he made the difference between Chelsea’s strength and Manchester United’s vital start to the season through their Community Shield triumph.
Dimitar Berbatov continued:
“It will count for nothing though if we don’t start the league season with a win against Newcastle on Monday. We know that it is going to be a difficult game.”
On April 2, I wrote about the injury Wayne Rooney sustained against Bayern Munich. I discussed Rooney's expected absence from the United lineup during a crucial period of fixtures and about how Dimitar Berbatov’s career at United would be judged by his performance while filling in for Rooney.
At the time, United were preparing to put their one-point lead in the Premiership on the line versus Chelsea, looking to overturn a 2-1 Champions League deficit against Bayern Munich, and finally facing Blackburn in a key league match all in the span of eight days.
With Rooney thought to be lost for a month it was clear United forward Dimitar Berbatov would take center stage to try to live up to the record price tag Sir Alex Ferguson paid for him.
In March 2010 we discussed the distribution of goals at Manchester United. The article focused on Wayne Rooney’s goal-scoring form and wondered where the goals would come from if Rooney were held in check and unable to score on a given day.
United’s worst fears were confirmed March 31 as the ankle injury that Rooney sustained against Bayern Munich will keep him sidelined for at least four weeks.
