How Denmark qualified for Euro 2012
It must be noted that the Danes qualified for Euro 2012 as winners of their table, Group H. The competition at the top was extremely tight with Norway and Portugal both fighting for automatic tickets. Iceland and Cyprus did not cause much threat and Denmark made the most of these minnows by securing maximum points against them.
During the 2012 UEFA European Championship qualifiers, the Danes lost 3-1 away to Portugal. However, they triumphed when it mattered most. It was a sweet relief for the home crowd when Denmark defeated the Portuguese 2-1 in October last year.
Before the UEFA Euro 2012 final draw, analysts tipped Spain or Germany to lead the eventual “group of death”. The caliber of Italy, Croatia and the Republic of Ireland cannot match the power of Portugal, Denmark and the Netherlands. It’s thus fair to brand Group B as the most difficult table ahead of Group C.
Since the start of the Paulo Bento era, Cristiano Ronaldo has performed well enough to satisfy Portugal fans as the team’s captain. In the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifiers, Ronaldo has scored 4 goals and contributed to several other strikes.
It’s all set up for a tense night in Copenhagen. After both nations began the campaign with some disappointing results, Portugal go into the match on the back of five straight wins in the section, while Denmark have an almost as impressive record of four victories and one draw in their last five Group H games.
Daniel Agger broke the deadlock for Denmark before Darren Bent equalised after some great work by Theo Walcott down the wing. Ashley Young, who came on as a substitute then finished the game off by scoring the winner.
Chelsea midfielder Lampard takes over the armband after Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard both withdrew from the squad with injury. Lampard will be partnered in centre midfield by Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere.
Capello confirmed that Wilshere will start against the Danes. He is likely to be deployed in a deep role just ahead of the back four.
Rio Ferdinand is the permanent captain for England but he suffered a groin injury prior to Manchester United's league defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
In fact, the Danes have an awesome record against the Three Lions. They daunted England in both teams’ last two international friendly matches. In 2003, Denmark edged 3-2 past England before humiliating them 4-1 in 2005.
While he does respect Fabio Capello's decision to leave him out of the World Cup squad, Theo Walcott wants to play better for his national side, starting with the Friendly match against Denmark.
The last time England played, there was controversy as Steven Gerrard featured in the match whereas he was said to be unfit. Towards the end of that game, which was against France, the play maker suffered a bad injury at the fury of Liverpool; England lost that encounter, either way.
Paulo Bento And The Cristiano Ronaldo Issue In Portugal
Finally, Cristiano Ronaldo returns to the Portuguese squad! The Real Madrid superstar, free from injury, was eventually made available ahead of Paulo Bento’s selection for the Selecção’s Euro 2012 qualifying matches against Denmark and Iceland respectively. Over the past two years now, Captain Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t managed to escape criticism from the public – and this also includes supporters of Portugal’s team who are apparently anxious about the player’s performances and statistics at the international level now.
However, many had accused ex-coach Carlos Queiroz for failing to make the most of Ronaldo’s talent through a convenient game plan. Now that the former Manchester United assistant has been sacked as Portugal coach, all eyes will be on new boss Paulo Bento to do what Luiz Felipe Scolari did best during his time with the Selecção: to find the perfect chemistry to connect Portugal’s entire team play with Cristiano Ronaldo as a key player at the center of success.
Portugal vs Denmark – Cristiano Ronaldo only has ONE option
After drawing 4-4 at home to Cyprus and losing 1-0 away to Norway, Portugal’s chances of entering the finals of the UEFA Euro 2012 are visibly slim. In addition to their problems, Carlos Queiroz’s replacement could be the source of instability issues among the squad; but although worries are piling up in the background, hope is not gone. Fortunately, Portugal still have one man who could lead them through the dark in their qualification for the European Championship, and that man is none other than Captain Cristiano Ronaldo.
Surely, for neutral football fans and Portugal followers, it is always exciting to see the world’s most famous active soccer superstar. However, in the situation where the Selecção presently are, big names with major club attainments are just priceless add-ons to a wounded army.
On paper, Denmark should do enough to deny all three points away from visitors Iceland. However, the Danes have team news concerns which they’ll have to deal with on Tuesday.
On the injury front, reports explain that striker Nicklas Bendtner and goalkeeper Stephan Andersen won’t be able to feature for Denmark. Bendtner is once again suffering from a groin injury whereas Andersen had to withdraw due to a shoulder problem.
Denmark vs Japan, First Half: Powerful Samurai Blue Free-kicks Explode The Danish Dynamite
Nicklas Bendtner was once accused of putting fancy colored boots despite not ranking among the world’s best players like Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. Tonight he put more fuel to his critics by coloring his white socks with a red pen inside the 2nd minute of the match only to attract people’s attention.
To be fair, the game was more entertaining than one could have imagined considering the pedigree of the two teams that were playing on the pitch. The level of performances displayed described the intensity of each contender to avoid the demoralizing fate of exiting from the group stages of the 2010 World Cup.
GROUP E matches will be played at 2:30 PM EST / 8:30 PM Local time. The Netherlands top the table with 6 points after beating both Cameroon and Denmark with comfortable performances. Holland will most likley still top this group even with a loss today to the Africans. The game will be a tension filled affair as both teams can not afford to lose. Denmark approach this match with a more aggressive approach as a draw will only favor Japan due to a better goal differential.

Denmark and Japan have 3 points each but the Danes’ 2-0 loss to the Oranje has put them below the Samurai Blue in Group E’s standings. Simple calculations tell us that the Japanese only need a draw to qualify whereas Denmark need to clinch maximum points in order to progress.
A Crucial Game And Japan Knows That
Whatever the situation looks like ahead of the Denmark clash, Japan’s boss Takeshi Okada has set his mind on playing for a victory only. The manager, who endured his side’s 1-0 loss against Holland from the dugout, made himself clear by saying:
“For football in Japan like for the entire team, this game is massive. The players have no option but to give everything they have. If they can do that, we can qualify. I have told them not to think about playing for a draw. We have to score and we will try to win from the start of the match.”
Cameroon vs Denmark, First Half: An Open Game
The Indomitable Lions took a positive approach from the start with Samuel Eto’o being more adventurous than he was throughout the game against Japan. Denmark were forced to draw back and defend but they were suddenly on the brink of catching Cameroon by surprise as Rommedahl beat the offside trap only to fire his shot with too much power which of course resulted in a goal kick.
At the other end, C. Poulsen made an unforgivable mistake at the back as he cheaply gave the ball away to the Cameroonians. Captain Samuel Eto’o took his chance by punishing the Danes with a well taken 10th minute goal. His celebration seemed to prove his pride for his homeland and his aim to go places with his team in the 2010 World Cup.
Cameroon and Denmark were both losers on Match-day One of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The Indomitable Lions were tamed by an aggressive and desirous Japanese side whereas the Danes had the Netherlands blasting their dynamite through a 2-0 score line.
All is not lost though for Cameroon and Denmark, but their remaining matches have transformed into must-win battles. Their destiny isn’t in their hands either way, as a draw between the Netherlands and Japan will mean the end of the road for the team that loses on Saturday.
