Italy is the nation with most sides in the round of 16. Germany, Spain, Russia, England and France each are represented by two sides in the competition. Cyprus, Switzerland and Portugal are each represented by one team. All these teams have made their passages through tough groups with perhaps the exception of Barcelona and AC Milan. These two sides were drawn with Plzen and Bate, two relative novices at this level, in the group stage.
However, CSKA Moscow are ready to play on the offensive, since scoring has become imperative if they want to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League. Coach Andre Villas-Boas is wary of the Army Men’s comeback spirit.
CSKA Moscow vs Anorthosis Famagusta FC
Having grabbed the last UEFA Europa League qualifying spot in the Russian Premier League last year, CSKA Moscow are once again experiencing European football. Last season, they had a remarkable run in the UEFA Champions League, but they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by eventual winners Inter Milan.
On Thursday night, the Russians will be up against Anorthosis Famagusta FC from Cyprus in the first leg of the play-off. They are poised to go through to the next stage of the competition as they aim to emulate their 2005 UEFA Cup triumph.

Manchester United is trying to avoid their earliest Champions League exit since they failed to advance past the Group Stage of the 2005-06 competition. The following season the Red Devils made it to the semi final before losing to eventual champions AC Milan. The club has been a finalist in each of the last two seasons, winning it all in 2008 and losing the 2009 final to Barcelona.
The first leg of the tie was very uneventful for the first 45 minutes. CSKA was very organized defensively and Inter struggled to break them down. Inter’s best chance of the half came on Goran Pandev’s blast from 25 yards out that narrowly missed its mark.
The second half showed CSKA taking the initiative early and Pavel Mamayev almost gave them the lead with a near miss of his own from 25 yards. The tide began to turn in Inter’s favor at around the hour mark, as Esteban Cambiasso’s well-placed pass to Dejan Stankovic created an opening but Stankovic was unable to create a quality shot.
After a few more chances that Inter failed to capitalize on they finally broke through in the 65th minute as Milito put the Nerazzurri ahead with a low shot from just past the penalty area. Multiple chances for Inter to add to their lead were off target with Pandev, Wesley Sneijder, and Cambiasso all having opportunities that missed.
Although Italy’s Inter Milan and Russia’s CSKA Moscow started the competition slowly and were considered underdogs to reach the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, neither of them will be happy with anything less than advancing to the semifinals.
The Road to the Quarterfinals 2009/2010
When the original draw for the group stage of the CL took place, Inter coach Jose Mourinho must have considered himself cursed. His Inter Milan team was drawn into the same group as defending CL trophy holders Barcelona. This was an especially cruel twist of fate considering Mourinho was brought to Inter specifically to win this tournament. Fortunately for Inter, the other two teams in their group were Russia’s FK Rubin Kazan and Ukraine’s Dynamo Kiev and two of the four teams would advance to the knockout round.
A point will be enough for the 2008 UEFA Champions League winners to qualify into the last sixteen of this season’s European tournament.
Manchester United are one of the few teams in the competition to possess a perfect record so far. The Red Devils have picked up three victories out of three games and all of those have proven to be real battles.
