Chelsea and Spurs had a rather bad weekend in the English Premier League. They now face the option of improving or hurting their morale in midweek through some FA Cup replay action.
March 6, 2012: Birmingham City vs Chelsea
Everyone’s talking about it. It’s impossible to analyse issues at Chelsea without mentioning the sack of Andre Villas-Boas. The Portuguese manager was on a three-year contract but his spell at the club suffered a brutal end on Sunday, March 5.
Under AVB, the Blues failed to defeat Birmingham City at Stamford Bridge. Murphy stunned the home crowd with a goal in the 20th minute and Daniel Sturridge replied with a second half strike. However, Chelsea lacked efficiency on the pitch. The Blues will therefore engage in a replay on Tuesday night with FA Cup quarter-final tickets at stake.

This grudge match pits the Barclays Premier League’s top two clubs, who have won a combined 21 FA Cup titles between them (Manchester United 11, Arsenal 10). The winner of this quarterfinal will be the odds-on favorite to claim yet another FA Cup.
In Sunday’s Carling Cup final, Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger once again failed to guide the Gunners to their first title since 2005. Eventually, he has vowed once again to bounce back as the season continues.

A spirited performance from Birmingham City at Wembley last weekend saw Obafemi Martins’ last-minute winner destroy Arsenal’s Carling Cup trophy hopes. In between Martin’s strike and Zigic’s opener for Birmingham, Robin van Persie had found an equaliser. However, it proved not to be enough for the Gunners to carry the day in the end.
“It's a huge disappointment. But we have massive challenges in front of us and the Carling Cup is four or five games,” Wenger told The Sun as he looked back on Arsenal’s fiasco.
“ The Premier League is 38 games and we can't throw 38 games away because of this. I'm confident we are strong enough mentally to come back and win things this season.”
Birmingham City lifted their first trophy since 1963 with a 2-1 Carling Cup Final over victory over Arsenal at Wembley Stadium.

Birmingham striker Obefami Martins pounced on a goalkeeping error by Wojciech Szczesny to net an 89th minute winner for the Blues.
Nikola Zigic had given Birmingham a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, before Robin van Persie equalized before half-time. Substitute Martins then swooped one minute from time to spark manic celebrations among the Blues fans, and ensure that Arsenal’s six year trophy drought is extended for at least a few more months.
Arsenal manager has confirmed that Theo Walcott will miss the Carling Cup final clash with Birmingham in Wembley.

Arsenal take on Birmingham tonight with an opportunity of clinching their first silverware in almost six years. However, the Gunners are facing a late injury crisis with Cesc Fabregas doubtful and Theo Walcott out of the game.
"He has an ankle sprain and he is out for how long I cannot tell you, for Sunday he is definitely out,'' Wenger said.
''Fabregas is a hamstring problem, we will assess tomorrow, tonight it is impossible to say how serious,'' he added.
''It is of course a concern that he [Fabregas] is injured but it happens unfortunately. He was very upset. I am as well. But it is not his fault or mine. It is part of sport. It's strange when it happens early in the game but we have to face it. We did the job after that in a very professional way.''
Sunday, February 27 is a gigantic day for Birmingham City who haven’t clinched any major trophy since 1963. But Alex McLeish’s side affronts Arsenal in the Carling Cup final today with great belief.

The very last time Birmingham City made it this far in a major cup tournament was back in 2001 when they finished as runners-up behind Liverpool in a thrilling Carling Cup final. Darren Purse had forced the game to go into extra-time with a 90th minute equalizer of Robbie Fowler’s first-half goal for Liverpool. However, bad luck saw them lose 5-4 on penalties with Grainger and Andrew Johnson missing their spot-kicks.
This is the kind of unfortunate result which Alex McLeish’s men are looking to overturn at Wembley on Sunday. Ahead of the Arsenal vs Birmingham City Carling Cup final, the Blues’ manager reminded the public that Birmingham City will treat the match with much attention. Speaking to reporters, Alex McLeish revealed his daring desire to wound regular Champions League contenders Arsenal as he stated:
The Arsenal vs Birmingham City Carling Cup final match at the Wembley Stadium is not just a simple League Cup final. In this article, Live Soccer TV highlights interesting facts and reminders.
Probably, football fans are presently more concerned in receiving information related to both Arsenal and Birmingham’s team status, as well reading quotes from dangerous participants of the clash. Yet, historical reality also has a huge influence on the Carling Cup final, and especially for the Gunners, their Sunday battle could even mark the end of a tedious era.
Arsenal vs Birmingham City: Arsenal In Search Of First Cup Since 2005
Almost 6 years have passed since Arsenal lifted a major title. The Londoners last celebrated a trophy on 21 May 2005, after defeating Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on penalties in the FA Cup final. A 0-0 draw after 120 minutes saw an outplayed Gunners side go for the shootout, where they luckily emerged winners 5-4.
Arsenal have a golden opportunity to end a five year trophy drought when they face Birmingham City in the Carling Cup Final on Sunday.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told BBC Sport his team will be focused on the task ahead of them at Wembley Stadium. “What is important is not what happened in the last five years, but what we can do now,” Wenger told BBC Sport.
The Gunners are still challenging for four different trophies this season, and will enter Sunday’s Carling Cup Final in good form after losing only one of their last 17 games, a run that includes a 3-0 Premier League win at Birmingham.
Cesc Fabregas’ personal trainer has got some good news for Arsenal supporters and for the player ahead of Sunday’s Carling Cup final against Birmingham City.

Late on Thursday, Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger had ruled out the possibility of featuring Cesc Fabregas on the pitch this weekend. The manager described the skipper’s problem as being “a very small injury” but he explained that it would require an indefinite period of time to recover.
However, Cesc Fabregas’ personal trainer has come out to explain otherwise. The Daily Mirror quoted him as saying:
“If the scanner confirms what we hope, Cesc can play in the Nou Camp on March 8 without problems, no doubt.
There will be no Cesc Fabregas for Arsenal against Birmingham City on Sunday, according to Arsene Wenger. The Arsenal coach’s decision has put an end to the skipper’s Carling Cup final dream.

On Wednesday night, Arsene Wenger claimed that it would take some time to assess Fabregas’ hamstring injury. The midfielder had actually picked it up during Arsenal’s English Premier League match against Stoke City.
Fabregas eventually missed the last 75 minutes of the encounter after complaining about his fitness. Commentating on the issue and on the possibility of having the captain fit for Sunday’s Arsenal vs Birmingham City Carling Cup final at Wembley, Coach Arsene Wenger explained while talking to the club’s official website:
Cesc Fabregas' health has suffered a big blow ahead of Sunday’s Arsenal vs Birmingham City Carling Cup final. But the Gunners' skipper has vowed not to let his injury shatter his long-time dream.

The medical team hasn’t given any report as of now concerning Cesc Fabregas’ availability for this weekend’s cup match. What has been understood so far is that the midfielder is suffering from a hamstring injury which he sustained in the early moments of Arsenal’s encounter against Stoke City in midweek.
Cesc Fabregas had to limp off the pitch after just about 15 minutes of game played. On Sunday, the Gunners will stand an immense opportunity to put an end to their 6-year title drought and Fabregas can’t think of missing such an event. The Spaniard left the following post on Twitter according to the Telegraph:
Theo Walcott has been ruled out of this weekend’s Carling Cup final. An injury has deprived the winger from participating in Arsenal’s 6-year title drought battle against Birmingham City at Wembley.

When Arsenal played Stoke City on Wednesday night in the English Premier League, Theo Walcott had to be stretched off towards the end of the game after hurting himself through a Dean Whitehead challenge. Coach Arsene Wenger quickly sorted out the issue with the media as he confirmed after the match:
“Theo Walcott has an ankle sprain and he is out [of the Carling Cup final]. For how long? I don't know. But he is definitely out of Sunday’s game.”
Meanwhile, The Walcott’s condition is not Arsenal’s only problem. The Gunners may as well have to deal with the absence of Cesc Fabregas who couldn’t play more than 15 minutes of football against Stoke City due to a hamstring injury.
Favored Gunners Return to Wembley Seeking First Trophy Since 2005 FA Cup. Carling Cup Final Live - February 27 on Fox.
Los Angeles (Feb. 23, 2011)– FOX Soccer will provide coverage of the season’s first quest for silverware – the Carling Cup final between Arsenal and Birmingham City from Wembley Stadium -- on Sunday, Feb. 27.
Arsenal and Birmingham City, which was promoted from the second-level Championship in 2009, are the last two teams standing in the 92-team tournament that encompasses all the teams competing in the top four levels of English soccer. The pressure will be on the Gunners to win their first trophy since beating Manchester United in a penalty-kick shootout to capture the 2005 FA Cup.
Birmingham City produced a dramatic comeback to beat West Ham United in extra time and reach the Carling Cup Final.

Birmingham beat West Ham to win 3-1 on the night (4-3 aggregate) and will advance to face Arsenal at Wembley Stadium in the Final.
Carlton Cole opened the scoring to give West Ham a 3-1 aggregate lead, and have the Hammers seemingly on course to reach the final at half-time. Birmingham scored second half goals through Lee Bowyer and Roger Johnson to force extra time, while an extra time winning goal from Craig Gardner sent the home fans into delirium, and the Blues into the final.
West Ham arrived at St. Andrews defending a 2-1 lead from their first leg victory, and it was the Londoner’s who looked the most comfortable in the early stages. Zavon Hines had two early strikes on goal saved by Ben Foster, and England striker Carlton Cole was a handful for the Birmingham defense.
West Ham United can relieve the pressure on manager Avram Grant by advancing past Birmingham City and into the Carling Cup Final on Wednesday night.

West Ham will take a one goal lead into the game at St. Andrew’s, after winning the first leg of this Carling Cup Semi-Final 2-1 at Upton Park.
Victory for either team will present these players with the chance to write a significant chapter in the history of their club. Birmingham have not won a major honor since their League Cup win in 1963, while West Ham’s last major trophy came with their FA Cup win in 1980.
Birmingham will have to turn around their recent form to get the win they need to reach Wembley Stadium. The Blues are winless in their last three games, and were beaten 5-0 at Manchester United.
A late error by young Birmingham City goalkeeper Ben Foster gifted West Ham a 2-1 edge after the first leg of their Carling Cup Semi-Final clash.

Liam Ridgewell had cancelled out West Ham midfielder Mark Noble’s opener, before Foster allowed Carlton Cole’s shot to squirm through his grasp in the 78th minute. West Ham scored their late winner despite having been reduced to 10 men when Victor Obinna was dismissed.
West Ham endured a lot of pre-game speculation about the future of their manager Avram Grant, who is aiming to make his second Cup Final in consecutive years. They looked to have put it to the back of their minds as they started strongly. Freddie Sears volleyed wide from an early chance before Matthew Upson forced a good reaction save from Foster.
West Ham took the lead inside the opening quarter hour as Noble fired an excellent volley past Foster from a tight angle. The Hammers continued to pour on the pressure, but a series of good saves from Foster kept the score down to 1-0 at half-time.
West Ham United and Birmingham City will clash in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.

Reaching the final of this competition will present fans of either club with a chance to celebrate winning their first trophy in a long time. West Ham’s last trophy was the 1980 FA Cup, while Birmingham fans have endured an even longer drought. The blues last trophy listed was when they won this competition in 1963.
West Ham manager Avram Grant is enduring tough times, as the club are currently sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table. A trip to Wembley for the Carling Cup Final will lift some of the pressure, and likely boost morale in the dressing room. Grant has reason to believe he can achieve it as he led relegated Portsmouth to the FA Cup Final against all odds last season.
Grant rested a number of players during the weekend’s FA Cup triumph over Barnsley and could bring some players back for this game. Scott Parker, Matthew Upson, Carlton Cole and Frederic Piquionne are among those in line for a recall.
Inter Milan are already thinking about the January transfer window. The Italian giants want Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas, according to local reports.

There’s a huge belief that the captain of the Gunners will not be seen at the Emirates next season following the transfer saga which involved Barcelona earlier this summer. It’s all but clear that Cesc Fabregas is hoping to quit Arsenal in the near future, and Champions League titleholders Inter Milan want the player’s departure from London to come up quicker than expected.
According to Tuttomercatoweb.com, the Nerazzurri are looking to capture the services of the Spanish midfielder in January. Napoli’s ex-chief, Pierpaolo Marino, was quoted as saying by the Italian media source:
“If [Coach] Benitez convinces his directors to listen, then two big transfers which didn’t work out in August could be ignited this time out. I’m talking about Fabregas of Arsenal [and Dirk Kuyt of Liverpool].”
It’s a Birmingham derby this weekend as Birmingham City travel across town to play their city neighbors Aston Villa at Villa Park. Sixth place Villa are on track to qualify for European football next season. Ninth place Birmingham are winless in seven matches. What better way to turn their fortunes around than a derby victory?
Aston Villa come into their derby match with Birmingham this weekend having won three of their last five league games and with consecutive wins over Portsmouth and Hull City in their most recent two matches.
Villa’s 0-2 victory over Hull at KC Stadium midweek hoisted the Villains up and over Liverpool and into sixth place in the league. If they can stay in sixth or even seventh this would be enough to guarantee them European football next season as they would qualify for Europa League action.
Yet manager Martin O’Neill and his men still hope to qualify for the Champions League. They can do that by finishing fourth in the Premier League. Now on 61 points, Villa trail fifth place Manchester City by a mere point and current fourth place Tottenham by just three.
Its must win time for Liverpool if they are to catch up to fourth place Tottenham. For Birmingham, however, the pressure is off. They’ve already achieved their goal of Premier League survival.
Birmingham City host Liverpool this weekend and although Birmingham manager Alex McLeish’s men have only one win in their last six matches in all competitions, they’re 13 games unbeaten at home.
The Blues did well to preserve their impressive home record last weekend against Arsenal, but they had to come from behind to salvage a point from the encounter. And in truth, Birmingham’s equalizer was a stroke of luck.
Goalscorer Kevin Phillips probably knew nothing about the goal attributed to him--the 250th of his career--until the ball, having deflected off his head, found its way through the hapless hands of Arsenal ‘keeper Pedro Almunia, and dropped inside the goalmouth.
Still, McLeish thought the final result a fair one. "I think we deserved it. It was a kick in the guts when they went ahead with ten minutes to go, but again we showed that never say die attitude and Kevin came up trumps again.”
