Four places are at stake in the Last 8 of the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Inter and Chelsea all want to get through regardless of how big or small their chances are.

Mar 13, 2012: Bayern Munich vs Basel
Bayern Munich have to correct the mistakes that saw them lose to FC Basel away from home. Luiz Gustavo is not taking anything away from the Swiss contenders who stunned pre-tournament favourites Manchester United en route to the Last 16.
“It is not only a very difficult game, but also a very important one. We will have to be very focused in order to turn around this tie. We have to deliver a good game from all positions. One mistake can decide everything!”
When the Champions League Final is to be played in one’s own backyard, investing on quality players doesn’t seem to be a bad idea. The Bayern board must take the blame if Bayern fails to advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

75% of the time, when Basel has won the first leg by a score of 1-0, they have advanced to the following round. 80% of the time, Bayern has progressed after losing 1-0 in the away leg. Facts and figures only tell half the story. A real look at matters suggests Bayern is truly in jeopardy of being knocked out tomorrow night.
Basel has a twelve point lead in the Swiss Super League after beating Grasshopper Zurich 2-0. The scorers on the day? - a future Bayern player and a former Dortmund player in Xherdan Shaqiri and Philipp Degen respectively! Bayern meanwhile reduced the gap with Dortmund to five points after a morale boosting, high powered and simply brilliant 7-1 win over Hoffenheim
Bayern takes on Basel to calm the nerves in what is seemingly becoming a jittery second half of the season.
Team News
Scott Chipperfield and Philip Degen have been ruled out with thigh injuries. Kay Voser is back from a long term knee ankle injury that kept him out since September. Basel has made some changes to their Champions League squad for this part of the season. They have included Stephan Andrist and Degen.
Bayern meanwhile has some injury...
Manchester United have had one too many setbacks this season. It’s interesting to know how they will end their 2011/12 campaign.
No more Champions League glory hopes
Already, their hunt for UEFA Champions League glory is dead. The Red Devils’ new generation of players couldn’t survive the existing pressure in the group phase of the tournament. Dropping points to Portuguese giants Benfica in the process seemed understandable, but losing to FC Basel in the Round of 16 decider was something too alarming to believe.
This defeat relegated Fergie’s team to the UEFA Europa League and provoked jeers among the Red Devils’ army of haters. But in typical fashion, battered Manchester United fans vowed to cheer their lads all the way to Europa League glory.
The fixtures for the Round of 16 of the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League draw have been revealed. In the highlight of the matchups, Milan and Arsenal will clash against each other in a two-legged tie.

Bayern Munich perhaps got the easiest draw. The German giants will face Switzerland’s Basel. Bayern’s German neighbors, Leverkusen, will have a much tougher task in the form of Pep Guardiola’s invincible Barcelona.
Jose Mourinho and his hungry team will need to face the cold weather of Russia. Real Madrid got paired with powerhouse CSKA Moscow.
Zenit and Benfica will vie against each other for quarter-finals tickets. It could be a close affair between the Russians and the Portuguese in this Europa League-like tie.
The Champions League’s Last 16 will see two teams from Germany, Spain, Russia, England, France and Italy competing. Benfica, APOEL and Basel are the sole representatives of their respective country.

Barcelona are poised to get a comfortable draw. The Catalans overcame the challenge posed by AC Milan in Group H. After qualifying at the head of this section, Barca can expect to be paired with an unseeded team relatively inferior to them in size.
APOEL are the odd contenders among the seeded teams. Arsenal did quite well and the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League season could be their time to shine. However, avoiding AC Milan is one of the Gunners’ dreams.
Interestingly, Benfica enter Friday’s UEFA Champions League Last 16 draw as seeded. This is the Eagles’ reward for dominating over favorites Manchester United in Group C.

The most ‘even’ Champions League draw will be taking place on the 16th of December.

Italy is the nation with most sides in the round of 16. Germany, Spain, Russia, England and France each are represented by two sides in the competition. Cyprus, Switzerland and Portugal are each represented by one team. All these teams have made their passages through tough groups with perhaps the exception of Barcelona and AC Milan. These two sides were drawn with Plzen and Bate, two relative novices at this level, in the group stage.
Nonetheless, Barca and Milan must be given credit for qualifying as the novices have risen this season. Whereas experienced competitors such as Manchester United, Villarreal, Porto and Valencia have gone out, the likes of Apoel Nicosia and FC Basel have progressed into the knockout stages.
Manchester United fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat in Basel that saw them eliminated from the Champions League group stages for only the third time since 1994.

Marco Streller and Alexander Frei hammered the nails into the United coffin, while Phil Jones headed a late consolation for the English champions.
United have reached three of the past four UEFA Champions League finals, and went into this game knowing a win or draw would be enough to advance to the knockout stages.
The Red Devils dominated possession in the early stages and adopted an attacking mentality. The pressure was turned up though when Basel took a 9th minute lead with their first genuine attack.
Xherdan Shaqiri produced a dangerous low cross that was redirected by David de Gea, and Marco Streller was on hand to fire Basel into a 1-0 lead.
Calculations reveal that Arsenal could become the sole English survivors in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League ahead of the Last 16.
Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City are interestingly more or less in danger of exiting the continent’s top competition for the Europa League. Unlike Barcelona, Real Madrid, Internazionale or Bayern Munich, the English trio cannot afford to relax on Matchday 6.
Andre Villas-Boas’ big test
Andre Villas-Boas led Chelsea to a 3-0 defeat of Newcastle United last weekend, but this result doesn’t mean that the coach has finished proving himself in the eyes of his critics. The Portuguese man is facing a tough challenge in the form of Valencia.
Since quite a number of years now, one of the Blues’ priorities has always been to win the UEFA Champions League. Today, they are in a serious condition which they can still overturn, though. A goalless draw will be enough for them to pass onto the knockout stages of the competition.
Benfica failed to take the opportunity to book their place in the last sixteen of the Champions League tonight, after being held to a 1-1 draw by FC Basel.
On a rainy night in Lisbon the hosts got off to a perfect start when Rodrigo Moreno struck a fantastic finish into the top corner of the net after just 4 mintues.
The Spain U21 striker had hit the post in the very first minute, and as Benfica continued to dominate a straight-forward home win looked inevitable.
Garay headed just wide, but Basel gradually began to get a foothold in the match.
The visitors got their reward in the second half, as Huggel finished smartly to level the scores in the 64th minute.
A home victory over FC Basel for Benfica tonight will book the Eagles’ passage into the knockout phase of the Champions League in double quick time.

What’s more, three points will also give the Lisbon outfit an excellent chance of finishing Group C above Manchester United in top spot, which theoretically would result in a kinder last sixteen draw.
Things are definitively looking up for the Portuguese side. Still unbeaten in 2011/12, Benfica have won their last six games in all competitions.
With up-and-coming striker Rodrigo, who scored a brace on Saturday night against Olhanense, showing signs he could be a real find, and an array of high-quality midfield options in Pablo Aimar, Bruno Cesar, Axel Witsel, Nolito, Matic and Javi Garcia to pick from, it’s little wonder coach Jorge Jesus says he is extremely satisfied with the squad he has at his disposal.
Benfica took a big step towards qualification for the knockout phase of the Champions League with an impressive victory over FC Basel in Switzerland tonight
Benfica made it two away wins in the row to move to the top of Group C tonight. A goal in each half gave the Eagles a deserved 2-0 victory over erstwhile section leaders Basel.
The hosts started off the more lively, but once Benfica took the lead on 20 minutes the Portuguese team took control of the match. It was a well worked goal, with Aimar, Gaitan and Rodrigo combining well to set up Brazilian midfielder Bruno Cesar for his fourth goal in Benfica's last six matches.
Benfica created the better chances to extend their lead, with Gaitan and Emerson missing when well placed, although Artur continued to show what an excellent addition he has been to the Portuguese side with a couple of vital saves from Streller.
Benfica travel to Basel, Switzerland, tomorrow, with a real opportunity of grabbing control of Champions League Group C.

Still unbeaten in 2011/12, the Portuguese giants have been solid rather than spectacular for the most part this season. Coach Jorge Jesus has toned down his gung-ho attitude somewhat, particularly in big games and European away fixtures, opting for a 4-2-3-1 formation instead of his previously favoured 4-4-2.
Impressive draws against Manchester United and FC Porto and a win away at Otelul Galati – the first away victory in the Champions League for Jorge Jesus – suggests the tactical switch has paid off.
But it will be no easy task against Swiss champions Basel, who made all of Europe sit up and take notice after coming desperately close to beating Manchester United in a thrilling 3-3 draw in the previous round of matches.
How on earth is it possible that Manchester United are not leading Group C ahead of Matchday 3 in the UEFA Champions League?
Well, the Red Devils are coming out from a 1-1 draw in the English Premier League which forced them to lose the first spot in the table to local rivals Manchester City. Having recorded a convincing victory over Aston Villa, the latter now possess a 2-point lead over the Red Devils of Alex Ferguson.
Losing the first spot in the standings on the domestic front could be either motivating or distracting for Manchester United. On another hand, it may be just another result which won’t have the least impact on Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League encounter away to FC Otelul Galati.
After all, the clash in Bucharest is going to be a totally different game from the Liverpool fixture; different competition, different opponent, different tension.
There were mixed emotions for Manchester United on Tuesday night as FC Basel held the hosts to a 3-3 draw.

It all started very easily for Manchester United; they broke the deadlock after only 16 minutes. It came through a fine combination from Antonio Valencia, Michael Owen and Ryan Giggs. Danny Welbeck was left in the box to put the ball past the goal line.
The English youngster doubled his tally a minute later as Manchester United looked sure to triumph on the night. But FC Basel responded well. Within a 2-minute spell after the break, the visitors went leveled.
First, Fabian Frei issued the comeback with a goal from a corner. Alexander Frei was then allowed too much space to make it 2-2.
Multiple times this season, media attention has been focused on the outstanding depth of talent available to big spending Manchester City.

Manager Roberto Mancini has a wealth of talent at this disposal, and the common belief is that City’s reserve team could achieve a top half finish this season.
This week the red half of Manchester must show that they have equal ability to cope without starting players and still achieve results.
Manchester United are currently tied on points with City at the top of the Premier League, and this week will be looking for their first win in UEFA Champions League group play.
After their Champions League home opener against Swiss club FC Basel. United play host to Norwich City, and then travel to face rivals Liverpool in a high profile Premier League battle.
On match-day 6 of the Champions League, 7 teams will be fighting for the last 4 tickets to the Last 16 of the competition. Arsenal, AS Roma; will any of these two big names suffer upsets?
The Last 7 Teams Hopeful Of Qualifying – Who Are They?
From Group A to Group C, as well as in Group F and Group G, everything has been decided in terms of Last 16 qualification. In these sections, the other two contenders must settle for what their respective positions can offer them – an Europa League spot or an exit from Europe.
Tottenham Hotspur, Internazionale, Schalke 04, Olympique Lyon, Manchester United, Valencia, Chelsea, Marseille, Real Madrid and AC Milan are all in a table where it’s become impossible for the rest of their opponents to join them into the next stage of the Champions League. In Group D and Group E, the question remains: who will join Barcelona and Bayern Munich respectively into the Last 16 of the Champions League?
Bayern Munich are suffering from a goal crisis at the moment. But ahead of their Champions League match against Basel, Louis van Gaal wants things to change.
The Dutch manager, who has just extended his contract with the German outfit, is wary about Basel’s threat. On paper, Bayern Munich should easily dispose their opponents on Tuesday night. The 1999 and 2010 UEFA Champions League runners-up accomplished their homework against AS Roma on the first match-day of the competition.
However, their unconvincing run in the German Bundesliga explains that things might not go that smoothly tonight. Coach Louis van Gaal failed to guide Bayern Munich to success against Mainz last weekend.
The manager is now wary ahead of the Basel match. Speaking to UEFA.com, the boss shared his opinions as he stated:

Wednesday’s night biggest score line occurred in London as Arsenal whipped Sporting Braga 6-0. In Germany, Bayern Munich left it late while both AC Milan and Real Madrid won in Group G.

Group E: Bayern Munich 2-0 AS Roma; CFR Cluj 2-1 FC Basel
Just as it had been predicted earlier on LiveSoccerTV.com, CFR Cluj beat visitors Basel with the narrowest of margins in Romania. It took two early goals from Rada and Traore for Cluj to get the job done.
Stocker’s 45th minute goal Basel proved to be nothing more than a consolation as the hosts went on to join Bayern Munich at the top of the table.
Hollywood FC played out a good match at the Allianz Arena against AS Roma and it was only in the last 11 minutes of the game that the Germans found the keys to unlock the Giallorossi’s compact defense. Muller and Klose were on target as Bayern Munich rounded up a 2-0 victory over AS Roma on home soil.

Sixteen teams will be in action in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night. Spotlights will be on Group E and G especially as Bayern Munich, AC Milan, and Real Madrid all play…

Group E: Bayern Munich vs AS Roma; CFR Cluj vs Basel
It’s hard to see last season’s beaten finalists Bayern Munich kick off their UEFA Champions League campaign badly. Aside from the fact that the Germans should benefit from their home advantage, AS Roma’s current form seems to have boosted Bayern Munich’s chances of clinching all three points tonight.
Likewise, the Giallorossi could bounce back from their alarming 5-1 Serie A defeat to Cagliari in style. Adriano, perhaps? Which of AS Roma’s players will be singled out as the ‘dream maker’ should they beat Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena? Meanwhile, CFR Cluj will entertain FC Basel in Romania with a fair opportunity of winning the match.
