Ghana vs Mali: Black Stars pressured to win bronze and cool down ungrateful fans

Friday February 10 2012,
Tags: Asamoah Gyan, Dede Ayew, 2012 Africa Cup of Nations
The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations has entered its very last stage. Ghana and Mali will fight for bronze on Saturday before Cote d’Ivoire and Zambia will vie for the golden trophy on Sunday.
The road to reach the Last 4 for the teams involved has been long. Mali will be content with a third-place finish considering the caliber of their opponents in each knock-out fixture.

Ousting Aubameyang’s Gabon on penalties against the odds was a remarkable achievement to do in the quarter-finals. Falling to Cote d’Ivoire on a 1-0 score line in the semi-finals was heartbreaking but not humiliating. The Elephants are arguably Africa’s team to beat currently so it would have required fire from heaven to destroy them and put Mali into the final.

In a rematch of Group D’s Ghana vs Mali encounter, the Eagles will strive for revenge. They have a genuine chance of punishing the Black Stars. Confusion and pressure has put pre-tournament favorites Ghana in an awkward position ahead of Saturday’s third-place final battle.

England vs Ghana Report

A superb injury time goal by Asamoah Gyan earned Ghana a 1-1 draw against England in an international friendly at Wembley Stadium.
Liverpool striker Andrew Carroll had given England a first half lead, before Sunderland’s Gyan leveled matters with a fine solo strike in added time.

The game was an entertaining affair and the tone was set early as both teams had early scoring chances. First Dominic Adiyiah was released before being denied by Joe Hart in the England goal, before Ashley Young forced a good save from Richard Kingson.

England then created another chance when Stewart Downing crossed to his Aston Villa teammate Young, but the winger fired against the crossbar when it seemed easier to score. Ghana soon threatened at the other end, and a Sulley Muntari free kick was met by Adiyiah, only for Hart to keep the scores level with an athletic save.

England couldn’t tame Ghana as their friendly ended in a 1-1 draw. A late Gyan show explained that Capello has many problems to solve as Live Soccer TV presumes.
For Fabio Capello, England vs Ghana appeared as a perfect opportunity for the Three Lions’ fringe players to acquire some experience points at the international level. So considering the crucial agenda of Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester United, there was no need for the Italian manager to risk the likes of Wayne Rooney, John Terry or Michael Dawson.

Those star players already have so much ahead of them to think about with the UEFA Champions League quarter-final stages taking place in April. In short, England vs Ghana was a great fixture to test how far England’s reserves have developed.

Stephen Appiah has blamed England for underestimating the Black Stars after Fabio Capello released five first choice players back to their respective clubs.
John Terry and four other players have been released back to their respective clubs after Fabio Capello decided that these players should have enough time to recover before the crucial Champions League battle next week. That decision has been blasted by Appiah, who believes that it is a symbol of disrespect to Ghana.

"It's like they are underrating the game,” Appiah told BBC Sport.

"A lot of Ghanaians have travelled from America, Canada, from around the world. It's a dream come true. It's huge, it's big and Ghanaians are going to follow the match. Ghanaians are disappointed.

Taking into account each player’s 2010 FIFA World Cup achievements, which of them really deserve to be in contention for the first edition of the combined FIFA Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or awards – actually named the FIFA Ballon d’Or? What does Luis Suarez’s omission, in truth, reveals? Is it, in a way or another, as part of the punishment for his unpopular “Hand of the Devil” incident which he boldly defended despite FIFA’s criticism that was based on role model concerns?

USA-Ghana: 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifications from Group C and Group D

How USA qualified from Group C

The United States shockingly topped Group C after outclassing favorites England. Bob Bradley’s boys held the Three Lions to a 1-1 draw on Day 1; in a game which has already transformed into one of the World Cup’s most remembered battles due to goalkeeper Green’s memorable gaff. This defensive and regrettable error from the English gifted USA with a point in their opening match, giving them confidence for the rest of their run in their group.

USA then met Slovenia, and on this occasion, the referee and his decisions turned against the Americans, as they were denied what should have been a fair goal within the time of action. Despite the disappointing controversy, USA still fought to secure a point subsequent to a 2-2 draw; but this meant that they had to win at any rate against the Algerians, as they were dangerously close to a consecutive Round 1 exit.
