Ivory Coast international Gervinho is beginning to make his mark in England since joining Arsenal this summer.

His good start for the Gunners, and his performances in Africa and France have all played a part in Gervinho receiving a nomination for the BBC African Footballer of the Year award.
During the first half of 2011, Gervinho played a key role as Lille won the Ligue 1 and Coupe de France double for the first time since 1946.
Gervinho scored a goal in the Coupe de France semi-final victory over Nice, and finished the season with a total of 15 league goals and 10 assists.
The Ivorian playmaker’s fine form attracted the interest of many top clubs around Europe, and he was signed by Arsenal in July for a reported fee of over 10 million pounds.
Gervinho’s Arsenal career got off to a stuttering start, after he was sent off in his debut for slapping Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton. While it could be argued that a majority of football fans want to slap Joey Barton, the act saw Gervinho heavily criticized and subsequently banned for three games.
Thierry Henry believes that Arsenal will feel nothing but regret should they part company with manager Arsene Wenger.

The former Gunner and current MLS star was part of the Arsenal team that clinched the club’s last trophy up to date in 2005. As a diehard supporter of the London outfit, Thierry Henry is concerned by Arsenal’s title drought.
However, he has ruled out the sacking of Arsene Wenger as a possible solution to get things in order at the Emirates Stadium. Like shareholder Stan Kroenke, Henry is in full support of Frenchman Wenger.
Arsenal are gradually growing their aspirations this season. The poor start to the English Premier League campaign is now something of the past.
The red hot form of Arsenal goal machine Robin van Persie has saw him named as the Premier League player of the month for October.

Not only was it a month when Van Persie established himself as the Premier League’s elite striker, October was a time when Arsenal got their season firmly back on track after a stuttering start to their campaign.
Arsenal began the month with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, a result that left the Gunners sitting only two points above the relegation zone.
However things looked very different 27 days later, when Arsenal beat Chelsea 5-3 at Stamford Bridge to register their third straight win and climb up to 7th place in the Premier League table.
During the month Arsenal also progressed into the Carling Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over Bolton Wanderers, and put themselves in a good position to qualify for the UEFA Champions League knockout stages with a 1-0 victory in Marseille.
Barcelona, Chelsea and Arsenal will all play on Tuesday night as the UEFA Champions League resumes with Matchday 4 fixtures. Most likely, football fans will experience no upset…

Despite the fact that AVB’s Chelsea are carrying a painful 5-3 defeat on the back due to their defeat to Arsenal last weekend, they are expected to complete their double against Genk.
On Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League, the Blues cruised to victory. Fernando Torres grabbed a brace whereas Ivanovic, Bosingwa and Meireles added their name to the scoring sheet to seal Chelsea’s 5-0 win.
“We always played the ball backwards; we have to change that mentality. We saw all of Chelsea's qualities at Stamford Bridge,” Genk’s coach Mario Been told UEFA.com on Monday.
Robin Van Persie established himself as the best striker in the Premier League on current form with a simply magnificent display at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

The craft, guile and finishing ability of Van Persie were too much for Chelsea to handle as the Dutch striker guided Arsenal to an incredible 5-3 win over third placed Chelsea.
The title of the Premier League’s best striker has been incredibly fluent in the past few seasons. Gone are the days when Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry would blaze a trail and be the standard for others to measure themselves season after season.
In today’s Premier League, it seems one season at the top can be followed by a swift downturn in form.
Fernando Torres had some incredible runs of form during his early years at Liverpool, but never did manage to win a Golden Boot title as the league’s leading goal scorer.
Arsenal started the season awfully but has since picked up and gone on a winning streak.

Arsenal could qualify from Group F on Tuesday provided that other results go their way. If they beat Marseille and bottom-placed Borussia Dortmund beats Olympiacos, Arsenal will book a spot in the round of 16 regardless of the results on match-day five and six.
Arsenal must be very confident looking ahead to the clash. They were the better side when the two teams played in France. Arsenal won the game in Marseille thanks to a late strike by Aaron Ramsey. More recently, they played Chelsea in a London derby and came away with all three points from a very difficult ground.
Marseille just about managed to put Dijon FC away in the league. They are ninth in Ligue1, a full 14 points behind leaders PSG. They have won just three games all season long.
Chelsea will tempt Arsenal’s bond of unity in Saturday’s crunch lunch time kick-off. The Gunners will affront the Blues in a London derby.

Arsenal are actively working on the reconstruction of their broken fortress. Skipper Van Persie is on an explosive run, recent results are positive and Wenger remains passionate about the club he joined in 1996. Speaking at the club’s Annual General Meeting, the Frenchman was quoted as saying by the media on Thursday:
“I believe the values we defend are highly defendable. We want to do things with class and be very brave. Courage is a quality I admire, because it is highly needed in the modern world.
“I can see a lot of fear and discontent among you - and I can understand that because we live in a world where we fight with people who have extremely high resources.
England captain John Terry has found himself at the heart of yet another media storm this week as QPR defender Anton Ferdinand accused him of using racist language.

It is not the first time Terry has landed himself in trouble on or off the field, and it is a safe bet it will not be his last.
In his storied career Terry has landed in hot water for;
• Striking a nightclub doorman with a bottle.
• Cheating on his now wife with nine different women.
• Selling guided tours of the Chelsea training ground and keeping the money himself without the club’s knowledge.
• Urinating on a nightclub dance floor, and finally getting drunk and being offensive to American tourists the night of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The above list does not mention arguably his most famous indiscretion, when he tore apart the England dressing room by again cheating on his wife, this time with the mother of teammate and former best friend Wayne Bridge’s children.
Arsenal moved a step closer to ending their six-year trophy drought when they beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1 to move into the Carling Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday.

While Arsenal have rarely taken this competition seriously in the past, the level of disappointment they suffered after losing last season’s final suggests they put a lot of stock in the event nowadays.
In the present scenario winning a trophy, any trophy at all will lift some pressure on Arsene Wenger. It is already unlikely that the Gunners will challenge for the league title, and the dominance of FC Barcelona makes the UEFA Champions League a long shot.
This means Wenger would be wise to take the domestic knockout competitions seriously so his team can achieve a tangible sign of progress and success.
Arsenal started this last 16 tie on the front foot, and South Korea captain Park Chu-Young forced Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan into two good saves during the early exchanges.
It’s time for football fans of the English game to switch their attention from last weekend’s incredible round of matches in the Premier League to this week’s Carling Cup action.

What almost everyone has been talking about since Sunday afternoon is Manchester United’s terrible 6-1 loss to local rivals Manchester City. How Fergie could seat down to let his side suffer helplessly in the hands of the Sky Blues for a full 90 minutes is alarming.
Manchester United commenced their season so well and their 8-2 triumph over Arsenal can be seen as the highlight of their marvelous early form. Lately, however, they stumbled against consistency.
It’s started with their 1-1 draw in the league away to Stoke City in which Wayne Rooney didn’t play. In the UEFA Champions League, Manchester United surprisingly failed to beat FC Basel.
In what happens to be their 100th game at the Emirates, the Gunners will be taking on a side they are not very fond of. Tony Pulis’ negativity is not very welcome at the Emirates.

If Arsene Wenger’s words are anything to go by, Stoke has great attacking talents too. That can’t be denied if recent results are looked at. On Thursday, they absolutely thrashed Maccabi Tel Aviv, 3-0. Their last game in the Premier League saw them beat a tough Fulham side 2-0 with two very late goals.
What has to be admired about Stoke is that they have come a long way since being promoted not too long ago. Who ever imagined seeing Stoke in Europe just two seasons back? This is what making an FA Cup final gets a team. Arsenal is used to being in European competition regularly.
Wednesday saw their patience tested in France. Marseille and the Gunners produced a generally boring match with the only piece of actual entertainment being the Aaron Ramsey goal which settled the match in injury time.
A stoppage time winning goal from young Welshman Aaron Ramsey moved Arsenal above Olympique de Marseille at the top of Group F.

Sergio Aguero had given Manchester City victory the previous day with a stoppage time goal, and this time Ramsey stepped up to give Arsenal an equally dramatic victory.
The Gunners came into this game two points behind then group leaders Marseille, and now sit top and have given themselves a strong chance of progressing to the knockout rounds.
The first half was a cagey affair, with the biggest chance of note coming when Robin van Persie had a looping header cleared off the goal line by Souleymane Diawara.
Arsenal also created the first scoring chance of the second half when Theo Walcott’s low drive was saved well by Steve Mandanda.
Wednesday October 19 2011,
Olympique Marseille are desperate to tame the Gunners of Arsenal on Wednesday night.

The French giants won both of their first two matches as they beat Olympiacos 1-0 and Dortmund 3-0 last month. Marseille now have the edge in the standings over Arsenal. Coach Didier Deschamps spoke to UEFA.com on Tuesday to reveal his expectations ahead of his team’s fixture against Arsene Wenger’s Gunners:
“I won't be satisfied with a draw. We have two games against Arsenal and need to take points as these six points could be decisive. Arsenal are a competitive team who can upset any team in Europe.
“The situation will be a bit clearer tomorrow; if we can take three points it would put us in the ideal position to reach the knockout rounds.”
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is currently enduring a rough time as Arsenal manager, and this weekend he will face a former ally aiming to deepen his crisis.

Young attacking midfielder Seb Larsson is enjoying a positive start to the season with Sunderland, and will be looking to continue that against the man who brought him to England.
The Swedish starlet opened his account this season with a spectacular strike to earn Sunderland a 1-1 draw at Liverpool, he has went on to register a total of two goals and one assist in his first seven games.
Larsson also had good news on the international scene in midweek when he scored for Sweden in a 3-2 EURO 2012 qualifying win over the Netherlands.
The win ended the 100% winning record of the Group E leading Netherlands, and sealed automatic qualification for Sweden as the best runners up.
Sunderland is never easy to play. At the moment, for Arsenal, even a championship side from England would be a challenge.

If any team needed an international break, it would be Arsenal. Having equalized against Spurs in the league, they managed to lose the match by squandering some great chances and giving away some glorious chances at the opposing end. Aaron Ramsey, who did score the equalizer, had too much too handle in the match and gave the ball away very often.
This week, the challenge comes in the form of Sunderland. Looking at the table, this battle can certainly be said to be one of equals. Arsenal sits in fifteenth, a point and a place ahead of Sunderland.
Tottenham Hotspur beat arch-rivals Arsenal 2-1 in a hot tempered North London derby at White Hart Lane.

Rafael van der Vaart fired Tottenham in front late in the first half, but Aaron Ramsey equalized for Arsenal shortly after the interval.
Spurs sealed the win with 17 minutes remaining when young right back Kyle Walker fired a long range effort past the despairing dive of Wojciech Szczesny.
In the buildup to the game, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger spoke of how he hoped a derby win could “ignite” Arsenal’s season. What transpired at White Hart Lane was quite the opposite, yet another defeat has left the club in trouble both on and off the field.
The defeat leaves Arsenal only two points above the relegation zone, and they must wait 13 days before they have an opportunity to improve matters when they face fellow strugglers Sunderland.

Tottenham takes on Arsenal in what promises to be a pulsating battle at White Hart Lane.

Arsenal sits in thirteenth spot in the Premier League with seven points from six matches. What is more is they have played a game less than their North London rivals who are currently sitting pretty in sixth with nine points from three games. Tottenham demolished Liverpool, 4-0, in their previous outing. Emmanuel Adebayor, a former Gunner struck twice.
Arsenal beat Bolton, 3-0, in their previous outing in the Premier League and was helped by a red card to a certain extent just like Tottenham. Spurs, in fact, were helped by two red cards. Liverpool had a man sent off before the half hour and another at just over the hour mark. Luka Modric, a player who didn’t exactly want to stay, played a wonderful match and scored.

Arsenal has won three games on the bounce. The defence looks leaky even with the new players but things look to be improving.

Earlier in the week, Arsenal fans and management found out that Jack Wilshere, one of their standout players from the previous season will not be available until late January. With the signing of Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal midfield looks more lively. The midfield also has a stronger feel to it thanks to Emmanuel Frimpong.
Wilshere was the man of the match as Arsenal beat Barcelona, 2-1, last season. His absence will be missed as Wenger tries out Tomas Rosicky and Aaron Ramsey in different matches in midfield. Wilshere, who has the vision that Rosicky seemingly used to possess and perhaps still does, and a bit of physicality to his game would be a perfect fit in the Gunner’s midfield.
Arsenal moved into second place of UEFA Champions League Group F with an important 2-1 home win over Olympiacos.

Oxade-Chamberlain opened the scoring in the 8th minute when he collected the ball from Alex Song, dribbled across the penalty box and planted a crisp finish into the corner beyond Franco Costanzo.
Twelve minutes later, another of Arsene Wenger’s transfer deals paid off, when deadline day purchase Andre Santos charged forward from left back and was slid in by Tomas Rosicky. The cross of Santos was blocked, but the Brazilian defender was first to the rebound and fired home to double the Gunners lead.
In the 27th minute Olympiacos hit back to make the score 2-1, and Arsenal’s long standing weakness at set pieces continued. Ariel Ibagaza worked a short corner on the left flank and floated a cross to the back post. David Fuster met the ball and bundled it home for the Greek side.
Coach Ernesto Valverde is not ruling out the prospect of an upset at the Emirates Stadium tonight. The Olympiacos manager prefers to stay positive ahead of the Arsenal game.

The Gunners are coming out from their terrible run at the start of the season and Valverde is aware of their potential. Speaking to UEFA.com, the Olympiacos man shared his own analysis of his side’s Champions League fixture in London.
“It's going to be very difficult for us. The pace of Champions League matches is very different to the Greek game – very quick, very swift,” he avowed.
“Arsenal have a lot of quality players with a great deal of experience, but we have to focus on our game and try our best.”
Ernesto Valverde added:
