Argentina Primera Division Report: Week 19 (Dec 11)

Sunday December 11 2011,
Dario Cvitanich ensured that Apertura champions Boca Juniors ended the season unbeaten with a late winner against All Boys at the Bombonera stadium on Sunday.
Apertura champions Boca Juniors capped off a memorable campaign with a 1-0 win over All Boys at the Bombonera stadium. Boca, Argentina's most popular club, ended the season unbeaten with a staggering 43 points, that came from 12 wins, 7 draws and zero losses.

Boca scored 25 goals and only conceded a mere 6 in nineteen league matches, a stunning achievement considering that Julio Falcioni's side finished in seventh-place of the 2011 Clausura championship, with only 28 points.

What makes Boca's triumph even that more satisfying is the fact that they can look down at arch-rivals River Plate, who lurk in the obscurity of the Argentine second division.

With the Argentine Apertura in the bag, Boca's next objective will be the 2012 Copa Libertadores, a tournament which they have won six times, but not since 2007.

The same could not be said for Godoy Cruz and Tigre however, after defeats reduced both team's chances of qualifying for South America's biggest club competition next year.

For now, Boca, Velez Sarsfield, Arsenal and Lanus have assured themselves of participation in the Copa Libertadores, with the final spot still up for grabs for either of the following clubs: Godoy Cruz (55 points), Racing Club (54 points), Independiente (53 points) and Tigre (52 points).

Argentina Primera Division Preview: Week 19 (Dec 11-13)

Saturday December 11 2010,

At the beginning it was River Plate the main candidate to occupy the top position of the tournament. Weeks later Arsenal and San Lorenzo made it to the first position but finally Estudiantes has been the undisputed leader throughout the whole second half of the tournament.

Velez Sarsfield has done an excellent job keeping up with Estudiantes' pace and only three weeks ago they joined Alejandro Sabella's Pinchas at the top, before losing it only days later.

Independiente was crowned Sudamericana champion last Wednesday and this leaves Lanus, Racing and Newell's without chances to obtain qualification for next year's Copa Libertadores.

The last round is likely to bring along a wide variety of surprises. Who'll become Apertura's champion by Monday?

Argentina Primera Division Preview: Week 18 (Dec 7-9)

Monday December 6 2010,
Apertura leader Estudiantes visits the Monumental to secure the Apertura title.
There are only six points in play and Estudiantes has been able to maintain a two-point advantage over runners-up Velez Sarsfield, who humiliated Godoy Cruz in Mendoza last week.

Pincha's striker Gaston Fernandez has played a major role in the last few games, scoring six goals in the last 9 weeks. Estudiantes will have to do without Juan Sebastian Veron and Enzo Perez.

Independiente's game will be rescheduled for the near future as Antonio Mohammed's Diablos will be locking horns with Goias for the second-leg match of the Sudamericana final.

Velez hosts Huracan in Liniers. The visitors are highly compromised with the relegation fight and a victory is mandatory to lift their spirit and obtain every possible point in the last two games.

If Velez fails to secure the three points, Estudiantes can become the new champion. Will they succeed?
