Jurgen Klinsmann first selected the 30 names he felt would be best equipped to represent the USMNT in Brazil. However, icon Donovan was eventually dropped.

The United States will be hoping to have a better time this summer, but of course will have it very tough due to their opponents in their group--nicknamed the "Group of Death" due to the the fact that it contains Portugal, Germany, and Ghana.

At the last World Cup, the USMNT finished top of their group for the first time since 1930 thanks to a better goal difference over England, but were promptly dispatched in the round of 16 by the Black Stars, who also beat them back in 2006 in that year's group stage match.

There were some interesting inclusions and exclusions; for instance, Bayern Munich youngster Julian Green, who is also eligible to represent Germany has received a call-up, but MLS fans will be surprised to see Eddie Johnson snubbed.

The 30 selected here eventually became 23

There is an interesting mix of American and European based players in this selection, with several of these names such as Everton's Tim Howard and MLS star duo Clint Dempsey making the list.

On May 22, Jurgen Klinsmann released his final roster. Landon Donovan was controversially among the seven players excluded.
