With a top four finish already secured, Arsenal can play with little to no pressure on Sunday. West Brom are still not mathematically safe, although it looks like it will happen soon enough.

Preview: West Brom are looking for safety at the Emirates

Arsenal has yet to take the pitch this weekend, and they have already secured a top four finish. Everton’s defeat at home against Manchester City was enough to take the pressure off the Gunners, as they head into their final match at the Emirates this season.

Their opponent is at the opposite end of the league table. Pepe Mel’s West Bromwich side are four points clear of the final relegation spot, and they have a game in hand. With three matches still to play, you would think the Baggies are safe, but they must remain cautious until they are mathematically safe.

Despite already having a Champions League spot secured for next season, Arsene Wenger wants to make sure his side are not complacent on Sunday.

“One of the ingredients we have this season is a response when everybody was writing us off,” said Wenger.

“We’ve always responded in a very strong way, which means the mentality is strong and healthy and united inside the camp. The challenge now is of course to beat West Brom. If you look at the names that they have in the team, they’re a good side, so we must play with a good focus and feel that we get stronger in every game.”

Since their victory in the FA Cup over Wigan in a penalty shootout, Arsenal has lifted their performances. With three successive victories, the Gunners will want to finish their last home game with three more points.

Arsene Wenger will be without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has been ruled out with a groin injury. Wenger is unable to put a timetable on his return, but the Frenchman will certainly not rush him back, knowing that a top four finish is already guaranteed.

Bacary Sagna is also struggling with a knee injury, which could keep him out of Sunday’s meeting with West Brom. In his absence, Carl Jenkinson will likely get the start in the Arsenal defense.

With just one away against Arsenal in 30 years, West Brom will have to be nearly perfect to come away with three points on Sunday.

Pepe Mel’s side has been performing much better lately, and they will want to continue that success against Arsenal, but they know it will not be easy. The Spanish manager believes his side need just one more point to feel safe, although he knows his side are very close to securing their place in the Premier League.

“I enjoy my job and being at West Brom, and the fans,” he told reporters. “But January and February were very, very difficult for me, with Long leaving and the Anelka situation and more.”

“The most important thing is at the end, though. If West Brom stay in the Premier League it is good work. But I want more than safety,” he added.

Without a defeat at home since their opening day loss to Aston Villa, Arsenal will be out to make it four victories in a row. West Brom’s one victory away to Arsenal is not a promising record against the Gunners, but with 15 draws this season, the Baggies could make things difficult on the hosts.
