Preview: Time to apply pressure on Atleti

Current La Liga champions Barcelona poached a much needed victory away to Villarreal last week. The game was marked by numerous events which include the home side’s two own goals and Dani Alves’ popular gesture of him eating a banana thrown at him by a fan. 

Lionel Messi also found the net to wrap up a 3-2 comeback at El Madrigal – a great gift to the recently deceased Tito Vilanova. Camp Nou will pay tribute to the former Barca manager this Saturday. 

The players will wear shirts printed with “Tito, per sempre etern” (Tito, forever eternal) while the stadium will play a video commemorating Tito’s life. There will also be a huge banner and a minute silence to seal what will be an emotional farewell. 

Having played a game more, Barcelona are second in La Liga with two points more than UEFA Champions League finalists Real Madrid. On Saturday afternoon, the Blaugrana could cut the four-point gap that separates them from the summit to a single one. 

Leaders Atletico Madrid only play on Sunday so Tata Martino’s side will be hoping to maintain the pressure on their title rivals before both will clash at the Camp Nou on Matchday 38 of the competition. 

Meanwhile, Getafe are chasing survival. Should they lose away to Barcelona, the Madrid-based club could fall into the bottom three if eighteenth-placed Almeria defeat twentieth-placed Real Betis on Sunday morning.
