After a stalemate at Vicente Calderon, the two sides will now clash in the decider to be held at the Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, the 30th of April 2014.

Preview: Mourinho’s master class puts Chelsea in the driving seat

Against all odds a Chelsea side without their star players subjected Liverpool to only their first defeat of the year. The Reds had been in ravishing form and their goal scoring antics had taken them to the Premier League summit.

After scoring an impressive victory over Man City, Brendan Rodgers’ men were expected to get their hands on the Barclays Premier League trophy for the first time, but Mourinho and Chelsea had other ideas. The Portuguese fielded a starting eleven which never looked likely to get the better of a Liverpool side which had been on a rampage.

Among the players who were handed the starting berth was 20 year old Tomas Kalas who produced a magnificent performance to ensure his team maintained a clean sheet.

Apart from the young Czech other fringe players who rose to the occasion included second choice goal keeper Mark Schwarzer who made a string of fine saves as well as Demba Ba whose opener in the first half set the tone for the remaining match and was very instrumental as Chelsea recorded a 2-0 win over their counterparts.

Because of Mourinho’s tactical master class Chelsea will now be able to field first choice players on Wednesday night as the Blues chase their second Champions League title. Chelsea last won the Champions League under the tutelage of Roberto Di Matteo who guided his side to European glory back in the 2011-2012 season at the expense of Bayern Munich. A fixture between the two European giants is very much on the cards, but first Chelsea will have to get the better of a side which has come in leaps and bounds this season.

Atletico Madrid are on the verge of clinching the league title for the first time in 18 years and made their case stronger with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Valencia last time out. Raúl García’s solitary goal of the match was enough to give Atletico important three points as Los Colchoneros maintained their four point lead over second placed Barcelona.

Whereas Mourinho has lamented over the fact that his team has been punished with a fixture list which has prevented them from doing well in both competitions, his counterpart Diego Simeone has claimed that one competition has no impact on the other and also hailed Chelsea as a very ‘powerful’ side.

“La Liga has nothing to do with the Champions League,” Simeone said.

“They are two different situations. There are four days between them so I do not believe one thing affects the other.

"What is clear is that Chelsea have a great team, because they were able to rotate so much as they did for this game, and still won 2-0. So we are taking on a really powerful team, as we already knew, and who can cause us a lot of problems on Wednesday.”

Midfielder Raul Garcia also spoke of the match against Chelsea and claimed that Atleti will need the support of their travelling fans if they are to achieve anything on Wednesday.

“Now the important thing is Wednesday,” Garcia said. “We must go out to win. In London we expect a very similar game. Chelsea are competing for the Premier League and will make things very difficult for us. The support of our fans will be very important. For this winning feels so good to us. For all of them.”

Interestingly Wednesday’s encounter will see the last two winners of the Europa League go against one another. Both teams have performed admirably in recent years especially in European competitions but Mourinho’s European pedigree might allow Chelsea to have an upper hand over their counterparts.

If Chelsea make it to the final of the competition, the Portuguese tactician will become only the first man to reach the Champions League final with three different clubs having already successfully won the competition with Porto as well as Inter Milan.

As for Simeone, the Argentine has never made it to the final of the competition as a manager and even though he has much less managerial experience than Mourinho he has been very impressive since taking charge of Los Rojiblancos  and knows exactly what his side must do to reach the Champions League final for the first time since 1974.

Chelsea are expected to be without a number of star players including recently crowned PFA young player of the year Eden Hazard as well as veteran striker Samuel Eto'o. Midfielders Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel will be suspended for the game whereas January signings Nemanja Matic and Mohamed Salah are ineligible and will not play a part. Goalkeeper Petr Cech is also a major doubt for the match, there are also concerns over captain John Terry who injured his ankle during the first leg.
Atletico on the other hand will be without captain Gabi who is suspended for the match.
