The top two in the Premier League lock horns in a crucial tie to be held at Anfield on Sunday, the 27th of April.

Preview: Liverpool looking to put the title race to rest

A 12th consecutive victory for Liverpool in the league could draw them closer to their first Barclays Premier League title. The Reds have been impeccable as of late and have defied all odds in cementing their place at the league summit.

Brendan Rodgers men have not lost a single league game this year and a victory on Sunday will put them eight points clear of Chelsea who will officially be ruled out of the title race should they lose.

Liverpool followed their 3-2 victory over Man City at the Anfield two weeks back with a victory over Norwich by the same score line. Early goals from Raheem Sterling and Luis Suarez put the Reds in the driving seat but the canaries came out a different side in the second half giving Liverpool a run for their money. Robert Snodgrass and Gary Hooper scored goal apiece but Raheem Sterling’s second of the night in the 62nd minute proved to be decisive as a nail biting encounter ended in Liverpool’s favour.

Should Liverpool manage to win the title by the end of the season, it will be a first for Northern Ireland international who has never won a trophy before. The 41 year old expressed his comfort sitting at the top of the table and claimed that it was his title rivals who are under pressure.

"I would be lying if I said I thought at the start of season we could be top of the table at this stage,” he said.

"Pressure? That's what they have at Man City and Chelsea, where they are expected to win the league. I'm enjoying being top of the league. I have never slept better!"

Chelsea on the other hand come into this match at the back of a stalemate at Vicente Calderón where they faced Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final which saw Jose Mourinho field an unorthodox starting eleven. The Blues were seen defending for most of the game and seemed content with the match ending in a 0-0 draw.

With everything to play for in the second leg, Chelsea’s Portuguese tactician has hinted that his side might invest all their energy on the European tie and not pay much heed to what has been deemed as the title decider against Liverpool. Mourinho has lamented the blame on the football authority in the country claiming that football clubs elsewhere are given much more time to prepare for European games by their respective boards.

"I want to win Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Wait for Sunday," he said.

"I think Chelsea fans want Chelsea FC to be respected and to get the respect Chelsea FC deserves. They know whatChelsea have done ... for English football for the last 10 years."

"They've been the most important club to defend this country in European competitions: they won the Champions League, they won the Europa League, they think Chelsea deserve more respect that they are getting. They want Chelsea to go to Liverpool and play, as always, at the maximum giving everything they have. Which players? That's our decision, not your decision."

However should Chelsea fail to win the title they will only have themselves to blame. The Blues have been largely inconsistent recently and it was their lack of commitment which allowed Liverpool to leapfrog them at the top of the table. Chelsea continued their poor form last time out when they were subjected to a 2-1 defeat by league bottomers Sunderland. As a result of which Chelsea now trail the league leaders by five points and even a victory on Sunday will leave Mourinho’s men two points behind Liverpool.

However Mourinho is regarded as one of the finest tacticians in the world of football and it would be surprising if he does not have a trick up his sleeve. The Portuguese has an impressive record against his counterparts on Sunday and will be hoping to better it. As manager of Chelsea Mourinho has won six of the eight matches he has played against Liverpool and has lost just once.

Whereas Chelsea are expected to rest some of their star players, the depth in the squad will allow the Blues to remain competitive in the match. Winter signings Nemanja Matic and Mohamed Salah will be back in the squad after being ineligible for the Champions League match, whereas Andre Schurrle and Demba Ba who started the midweek fixture against Atletico on the bench are also likely to feature.

The Blues however do have a couple of injury concerns ahead of the match and are set to be without John Terry (ankle), Petr Cech (shoulder), Samuel Eto'o (hamstring), whereas midfielder Ramires will not be able to play in the league this season after his red card against Sunderland. Eden Hazard who last played in the second leg of the Champions League Quarter Final against PSG is a doubt for the match but might feature.

Brendan Rodgers will have an almost fully fit side to his expense with Daniel Sturridge likely to return to face his former club. Full back Jose Enrique is definitely out of the match whereas Jordan Henderson will continue to serve suspension due to his red card against Man City.
