After an action packed encounter on Sunday, which saw Man City take on Liverpool at Anfield, the Citizens now return home where they face Sunderland, a side rock bottom in the league table.

Preview: City looking to respond following Anfield heartache

A scintillating encounter between title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City ended in a 3-2 victory for the Merseyside outfit as the Reds capitalized on a mistake by mister reliable, Vincent Kompany. The Citizens were met by a resounding Anfield, as the kop faithful made themselves heard putting the Man City players under pressure.

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for the home side with a well composed finish which was followed by a thumping header from Skrtel to give Liverpool a 2-0 lead in the first half.

However City started the second half as the more dominant side and James Milner’s introduction injected a much needed urgency in the side. It was the Englishman’s good work which earned the Citizens their first goal as Silva pushed the ball into the net and the former Aston Villa man was involved in the second goals as David Silva’s deflected shot found its way into the net.

The Spanish international could have made it three for his side had he met Sergio Aguero’s cross better, however it was Liverpool who made use of their chances as a mistimed clearance from captain Vincent Kompany landed the ball into Philippe Coutinho’s feet and the Brazilian punished Man City with a wonderful curling strike.

The victory has handed Liverpool a seven point lead at the top and should Man City manage to win both their matches in hand, even then the sky blues will be lagging behind the Reds.

However Man City centre back Martin Demichelis is adamant that the title race is not over as yet and is hopeful Liverpool can make a mistake his side can capitalize on.

"We didn't start well in the match and they were better than us until they scored the first ," he said.

"Then there were a lot of set-pieces, and that is how they got the second goal, from a corner kick.”

"After that there was not a lot of continuity in the match, but in the last part of the first half we played much better than them but couldn't score.”

"We're obviously not happy about the result but we know we have matches ahead and you have seen in football that we can still win - they can still make mistakes.”

"Hopefully we will win the rest and expect some mistakes from Liverpool. No-one left the stadium feeling they were champions, and we have plenty of matches."

Sunderland on the other hand are as desperate for three points as their counterparts. After 32 matches the Black Cats find themselves at the bottom of the league table, seven points behind 17th placed Norwich City. Wins for Cardiff City and Fulham over the weekend have not helped Sunderland’s cause and as things stand Gus Poyet's side are desperate for a victory.

However Sunderland do have two matches in hand and should they win both, the Black Cats will have a chance of survival. They will also be buoyed by a 1-0 win over the Citizens earlier in the season in the reverse fixture courtesy of a goal from Phil Bardsley, however it was the Citizens who emerged victorious last time the two sides met which was in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley.
Sunderland’s form has been disastrous as of late with the Black Cats losing all their last five matches in the Premier League. However their last outing against Everton saw Gus Poyet's’ side put up a better performance and they were unlucky to lose 1-0 in the end.

Steven Fletcher who in the past has been part of relegated sides Burnley and Wolves is unlikely to feature on Wednesday as he nurses an ankle injury. Phil Bardsley on the other hand will remain suspended for the match.

City have been dealt with a major blow with Yaya Toure ruled out of the match. The Ivorian who has arguably been Man City’s top performer this season suffered a groin injury in the match against Liverpool and is expected to be out for some time. Sergio Aguero on the other hand was a second half substitute in the match against Liverpool and is poised to make his first start for City in over a month.
