After a highly contested first leg which finished in a 1-1 draw, the two teams will battle it out in the decider at the Estadio Vicente Calderón.

Preview:  Atletico hoping to make full use of away goal advantage

Diego Simeone’s men unfazed by an energetic home crowd in the first leg put an emphatic showing at the Camp Nou.  Despite a setback which saw star man Diego Costa stretched off due to an injury Atleti remained the most dangerous side in the first half and could have taken an early lead had David Villa been more clinical. It was a wonder strike from Brazilian midfielder Diego Ribas which gave the visitors the lead and Atletico were poised to end the first leg with a goal advantage until Neymar leveled the scores in the 71st minute.

Despite the match ending in a draw, Atletico will have the happier set of fans with Los Colchoneros carrying an important away goal to the second leg. The home side are now undefeated in their last five games in all competitions and in their last outing against Villarreal, Los Rojiblancos scored a hard fought 1-0 victory over the visitors to ensure they maintain the top berth in the Spanish League. Atletico have continued to defy all odds and with just six games to go in La Liga Diego Simeone’s men have presented themselves as favorites for the league title.

Barcelona on the other hand will be hoping for a strong response after off the field matters which have rocked Camp Nou. The Catalans have been penalized with a two window transfer ban after failing to abide by transfer regulations at youth level. Whereas a transfer embargo is likely to weaken Barcelona in the subsequent years the Blaugrana  will be hoping to make a statement this time around by winning Europe’s’ top prize.

Spanish midfielder Xavi Hernandez was among the Barcelona players to express their disapproval on FIFA’s decision while also claiming that his side would do their best to score more goals in the second leg.

“From the dressing-room we believe that the FIFA ban is disproportionate,” he said.

“We could do little else. The club is taking all legal measures, and we hope this ends in nothing. La Masia does absolutely correct work in all senses, and we will try and do everything to defend it. We have cases like Leo [Messi] or Andres [Iniesta] who have come from outside. Here the kids are looked after well.”

“We would like to have got a more favourable result,” Xavi said. “A 1-1 draw is not so good, but we will go there full of motivation and spirit to go and win the game. We are a team made to attack and score goals, and are up against a team which is just the opposite. We must try and get ahead on the scoreboard. We have not done that in any of the four games. We would see then how they react. That could be key to the game.”

The draw in the first leg was the fourth between the two sides this season with the league encounter as well as both the Spanish Super cup ties ending with the scores leveled. Atleti will be in a buoyant mood ahead of the match having won 16 of their last 17 home games in UEFA competition. However Barca enjoy a fine record against their counterparts having not lost at Atletico in four years and will need to maintain the streak if they are to make it to the semi-final of the competition for the seventh successive season.

Whereas Barcelona have been challenging for the European glory regularly, Atleti will be hoping to make their first semi-final appearance since 1974. Los Indios have not enjoyed much success in Europe’s’ top tier competition but have landed two European titles in recent times in the form of a Europa League title which they first won in the 2009–10 season and later in 2011–12.

However Atletico will have to do the job without star striker Diego Costa who has been sidelined for the match after suffering a hamstring injury in the first leg. Atleti could be without another star player with midfielder Arda Turan (groin) also a doubt for the important game. Gerard Pique (hip) on the other hand is set to miss out for the visitors after he limped off in the first leg. He is accompanied on the Barca injury list by fellow centre back Carles Puyol (knee) as well as goalkeeper Victor Valdes (knee).
