In a one-off game in Munich, two teams with plenty of history between each other will fight for one spot in the final four of the competition formerly known as the European Cup.

Preview: Can Pep Guardiola's Bayern overturn recent fortunes?

Manchester United perhaps could not have asked for this tie to take place at a better time than it did. They are finally stringing results together; their performances, while not altogether convincing, seem more jointed. Their showing in the first leg was spirited enough to keep them in the tie. In all honesty however, Bayern created little against a staunch Manchester United defense, despite having possession for much of the match.

It is strange to say that Bayern has now gone winless for three matches.

They drew 3-3 against Hoffenheim in what a dismal showing defensively, drew 1-1 at Old Trafford and lost a Bavarian derby to a depleted Augsburg, 1-0 at the weekend respectively. Guardiola’s side looked disjointed and created little of note. Now, aside from the drop in performance levels, Guardiola has another problem called injuries.

Thiago Alcantara is out of a match in which Guardiola could definitely have done with an extra midfielder. Xherdan Shaqiri is also out following an injury during the weekend. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Javier Martinez are both suspended, leaving Toni Kroos and Philipp Lahm as the only two regular defensive midfielders with David Alaba a third option. Injuries to second choice keeper Tom Starke and third choice keeper Lukas Raeder has left 19 year old Leopold Zingerle as Bayern’s second keeper.

Marouane Fellaini, Rafael and Jonny Evans will play no part for United in this one. They have both been left home due to injuries. Robin Van Persie is still out. Ashley Young is a doubt while Juan Mata is ineligible. Wayne Rooney suffered an injury during the past week but has still flown with the squad. It seems he will start the game through pain as he did four years ago in 2010 at Old Trafford in the second leg between the sides.

The two sides met in this very competition in 2009-10. Bayern dominated the match at the Allianz Arena and despite conceding an early goal, went on to score two very late goals to keep themselves ahead in the tie. Ivica Olic scored the injury time winner.
