Preview: Los Blancos obliged to fight boos
Real Madrid were one goal away from creating a sensational comeback against Borussia Dortmund last season. After emphatically falling 4-1 in Germany due to the exploits of four-goal hero Robert Lewandowski, “La Remontada” (The Comeback) became the most popular term in Madrid-based paper Marca.
Los Blancos were asked to find motivation from historical records while Jose Mourinho was sweating over the fitness of star man Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese, who netted a goal in the first leg, failed to get on the scoring sheet at the Bernabeu. Late goals by Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos were not enough as the Spanish giants suffered a heart-breaking exit from Europe.
Madridistas are now dreaming of settling scores. On Wednesday night, in the absence of key defender Marcelo, Real Madrid will be seeking a resounding victory. The team was booed for selfish play during their 5-0 win over Rayo Vallecano. After conceding the first spot in La Liga within two Matchdays, Real Madrid are back to square one where they need to recapture the confidence of their fans.
While La Decima remains a realistic target, Borussia Dortmund will want to upset the atmosphere in the Spanish capital on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, a brace by Cristiano Ronaldo on his 100th UEFA Champions League game would see him break Lionel Messi’s record of most goals (14) in the tournament in a single season.
