It would be an understatement to say Roma captain Francesco Totti is as much an icon for the Giallorossi as he is for the Italian capital.

The 37-year-old is now the most capped player in the club's history, with over 700 appearances and is also the top scorer with 678 goals in competitive matches (excluding friendlies).

Totti has spent his entire career with the capital club since making his debut on 28 March 1993 at just 16 years old and despite his advancing years, shows no sign of slowing down as he has helped Roma to a second-place standing in the league this season.

And, as a result for his faithful service, club president James Pallotta has announced that the iconic number 10 jersey will be retired once 'Il Capitano' hangs up his boots.

C'è solo un capitano: The no. 10 jersey will be retired in honour of the 2006 World Cup winner

Indeed, so has been his influence on his team this year that there have been calls for Italian national team coach to bring him to the World Cup in a few months, but that remains to be seen as to whether both Prandelli and Totti will feel that is the right direction for the Azzurri.
