Bayern takes on Hertha Berlin in a bid to secure the Championship on the ground in which they celebrated their 2010 triumph.

Preview: Can Bayern ride to victory against Hertha and secure the title?

The Bundesliga title will be on the line when Bayern travels to Hertha Berlin on Tuesday. They could win the title with seven games to spare if they simply beat the capital side. When the two sides met in 2010, the scenario was different. Hertha had relegation on their minds while Bayern had the championship on their minds. Eventually, a 1-3 defeat in front of their home fans awarded Bayern the title and sent Hertha into the 2.Bundesliga.

The scenario is much more different for Hertha this season. They sit in ninth spot, a full sixteen points clear of the relegation play-off berth. In fact, the scenario is much different for Bayern too. In 2009-10, the title battle boiled down to the last two match-days. The Bundesliga has not seen a title race as exciting as the 2009-10 race since then. The triumphs of Dortmund and Bayern have been relatively one sided.

Last season, Bayern clinched the title with six games to spare. They played Eintracht Frankfurt in the title clincher and their nerves really did get the better of them. Eventually, the player who decided Bayern’s match against Mainz on Saturday decided that game. A clever back heel from Bastian Schweinsteiger won Bayern back the title they begrudgingly surrendered to Borussia Dortmund in 2011 and 2012.

Hertha is coming into this one on the back of a demolition really at the hands of one of the league’s best sides, Borussia Mönchengladbach. They went down 3-0 to the Jupp Heynckes’ favorite side. All of Gladbach’s best attackers, Juan Arango, Max Kruse and Raffael, got on the score sheet. The match was effectively over in the first half. Bayern meanwhile struggled against one of the league’s overachievers massively. They failed to break down Mainz and could have gone into the break a goal down. In the second half, a glorious free-kick from the midfielder adoringly referred to as "Schweini" saw Bayern break the deadlock with eight minutes to go in a match which increasingly looked like it would finish 0-0. Mario Götze added a second for good measure.

Pep Guardiola will finally have a full squad to choose from excluding Holger Badstuber of course for this vital clash. Hertha will have to find a way to replace Sebastian Langkamp who will be serving a one match suspension. Pep Guardiola will seemingly not be satisfied with even winning the title. This is what he had to say to Bayern’s official website:

“I don’t just look at the results, at the 18 wins on the trot, at the 23-point lead. I also look at the way we play. And there’s plenty of room for improvement.”
