Sunday night saw an El Clasico match with seven goals and three penalties awarded. Argentine star Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick with two of them coming from penalties, one being rather controversial. It saw Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos sent off and Messi tie the match 3-3 before adding his fourth goal to win the game.
However, Real Madrid weren’t the only victims of a controversial penalty.
Real Madrid were awarded a penalty 10 minutes after the second half restart, after Cristiano Ronaldo was tripped by Barcelona defender Dani Alves. However, replay shows that Dani Alves commited the foul outside the penalty box. The referee didn’t see that and gave the penalty, which Ronaldo converted to make it 3-2.
But the foul was outside the penalty box
Blaugrana defender Gerard Pique was quick to remind Cristiano Ronaldo of this incident as the Portuguese ace had criticised Sunday night’s referee for being biased towards Barcelona, saying:
“It's a real shame that Ronaldo is complaining about the referee again after such a great game," said Pique.
"If we go and discuss each individual decision, Ronaldo's penalty was outside the area..."
Was it tit for tat?
