1986 saw them get knocked-out by Argentina after a debatable goal from Diego Maradona, but in 1990, England arrived in fourth place. The France 1998 World Cup did not seem to be beneficial for the English team, as they were thrown-out in the Round of 16. England could only get into the quarterfinals of the tournament in 2002 and 2006; however this year, we can expect a completely different chapter.
England registered their name in the 2010 edition after finishing their qualification campaign as leaders of their table with 27 points, ahead of Ukraine who had to advance into the play-offs. The Three Lions are now with the United States, Algeria and Slovenia in Group C, in the Round of 32.

They became quarterfinalists in 1986, 1994 and 2002; but they were silenced in 1990 and 2006, as they were punished in the Round of 16... Their 1998 run was destroyed in Round 1; nonetheless, as Confederations Cup bronze medalists and reigning UEFA Champions, they could win the competition in South Africa in July to break their mysterious curse.
Spain won all their games in the qualifying part of the South African tournament to lead their qualifying group. They are now with Switzerland, Honduras and Chile in Group H.
