After being knocked out of the Europa League, Tottenham now return to Premier League action where they face Southampton at the White Hart Lane.

Preview: Spurs hoping to end winless streak

The Lilywhites have failed to record a victory in their last four matches in all competitions. The winless streak began at Stamford Bridge at the beginning of the month when the North London side received a thrashing at the hands of league leaders Chelsea.

This was followed by a Europa League outing against Benfica and a Premier League tie against arch rivals Arsenal both at home, but Sherwood and co were unable to take advantage of playing at their own turf and suffered defeats in both the matches.

Having suffered a 3-1 defeat in the first leg against Benfica, Spurs came all guns blazing in the second leg against the Portuguese side and even though they fought valiantly, Spurs ultimately crashed out of the tournament.

Tottenham’s chances of claiming a top four finish by the end of the season seem unlikely at this point with Spurs trailing fourth placed Man City by seven points. This means that Tottenham will once again fall short of their Champions League dream and will have to settle for Europe’s secondary club competition again.

Belgium international Jan Vertonghen has voiced his disappointment on the inability of his side to challenge for a top four place and has claimed that Spurs have not improved much from last season.

"I do not want to look at the table anymore because the gap [to the top four] is very big," said Vertonghen.

"All four sides at the top are stronger than they were last year and we have stayed at the same level. If you see last season, then we did not improve.

"[However], I think we do have the players to achieve Champions League [qualification] and I hope we can achieve it next year."

The former Ajax man also expressed his frustration over his team’s elimination from the Europa League but stressed on the importance of making a response in their next outing against Southampton.

"Of course we are all disappointed but we will try to come back with some good results," he said. "It is difficult now but we have to [pick ourselves up] and go again."

However if Tottenham are to achieve anything this season they will have to put much better performances than they have in their recent fixtures. Spurs have lost three of their last four games in the Premier League and have scored just a single goal in the process. Next week they will go against the league’s top scorers Liverpool who scored five times against the North London outfit last time the two sides met. A disastrous night for Spurs resulted in the sacking of former manager Andre Villa Boas and Spurs will definitely have to pull their socks up to avoid a similar fate.

Southampton on the other hand have European ambitions of their own and will be hoping to make it to the top six which will be enough to land them a European spot. However Mauricio Pochettino's side will have to overhaul the likes of Tottenham, Everton and Manchester United to achieve this.
After three straight defeats in all competitions Southampton recorded a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace which was followed by a 4-2 victory against Norwich at home. The Saints will now be looking to make it three wins on a trot having enjoyed a week’s rest which is in contrast to their counterparts who have suffered from a busy run of fixtures recently.

Last time the two sides met was Sherwood’s first league match as manager of Tottenham. In his first league outing the Englishman guided his side to a 3-2 win over the Saints courtesy of a brace from Emmanuel Adebayor. The Togo international who has established himself as a key figure under Sherwood will return to the side after being rested for the European outing. Other players rested during the midweek encounter include the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Hugo Lloris and Paulinho all of whom are expected to return for the home tie against Southampton.

However defenders Michael Dawson, Vlad Chiriches and Kyle Walker along with Erik Lamela and Etienne Capoue will remain on the sidelines.

Southampton received an injury boost with Dejan Lovren expected to feature during the weekend encounter despite of suffering a groin injury in the game against Norwich. However the visitors are likely to be without a number of players including Gaston Ramirez (knock), Jack Cork (ankle), Victor Wanyama, Morgan Schneiderlin, Guly do Prado and Kelvin Davis (all knocks)
