While Jürgen Klopp claims that BVB have already reached their target in European competition, he perhaps knows deep inside that his team, if not an outright contender, is at least a dark horse for the trophy.

Preview: Can Zenit put in a good performance amidst management changes?

Luciano Spalletti has built quite a few famous teams but Zenit is not set to be one of them. Filled with experienced Russian internationals and expensive recruits, the team has just not gelled on the pitch. Borussia Dortmund took apart the Russian outfit despite not being at their best in the first meeting between the two in the cold in Petersburg. Dortmund has four away goals to their name as a result.

However, Borussia’s problems at home are worth mentioning. Firstly, they were beaten by Borussia Mönchengladbach during the previous weekend, 1-2. Klopp was once again disciplined by the referee for overreacting; the feeling now is that a crime committed by Klopp will be more harshly punished than that committed by another Bundesliga coach as he is a “repeat offender”. Indeed, he was handed a $13,930 fine by the DFB.

Dortmund’s injury list however would force many a team to simply slide down the table. They have nonetheless managed to hold on partly due to the ineptitude of the opposition in the Bundesliga. Neven Subotic is presumably out for the entire season. Ilkay Gündogan’s back problems are yet to desert him. Jakub Blaszczykowski is out for a long period as well. The ever reliable Sven Bender and Jannik Bandowski will play no part in this match either. Marco Reus, Marian Sarr and Lukasz Piszczek are all doubtful. For Zenit, Andrey Arshavin, Egor Baburin and Cristian Ansaldi are doubtful.

Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, a Champions League winner in his own right, was partially behind his club’s downfall in the first leg. He is the one who is counted upon to add stability at times. The team needs a definite plan. Andre Villas Boas is set to take over. However, the timing of the tie is disastrous for Zenit. Dortmund on the other hand must not allow carelessness to slip into their game. They almost allowed Zenit to come back in the first leg when Hulk converted his penalty.

Can Dortmund see the tie through? Or will Zenit shock everyone?
