A mouth-watering clash will see two of the most successful clubs in the country go head to head as Liverpool face Man United at the Old Trafford.

Preview: Liverpool hoping to catch Chelsea in title race

Both the teams will enter the pitch with different ambitions, Liverpool’s recent form has given the kop faithful a new found belief and Liverpool fans will be hoping their team can lift the league title for the first time in the Premier League era. The Red Devils on the other hand after a title winning campaign last season are still hoping to finish the season in the top four.

For Man United to land a Champions League place, it will take a miracle of epic proportions.

The residents of Old Trafford trail fourth placed Man City by nine points, however the Citizens have played two less games than their City rivals and will be difficult to catch should they materialize on their matches in hand.

Liverpool on the other hand have more reasons to believe that this is the season which will finally bring an end to their league title drought. The Reds last won the league title back in the 1989-1990 season and even though they have come very close to winning it since then, they have failed to add a 19th league title to their trophy cabinet.

Brendan Rodgers' men trail leaders Chelsea by just seven points and have a match in hand and with the Reds yet to play Chelsea in the league at home, Liverpool will be fancying their chances of ending the season with a trophy.

However in order to achieve that it is imperative that Liverpool notch all three points at Old Trafford on Sunday, a venue they have not fared well at in recent times. Of the last nine meetings between the two sides at the theatre of dreams United have won eight and lost just once. The Red Devils have also been dominant in the last five meetings between the two sides in all competitions which has seen United win four times, three of these matches resulted in a 2-1 victory for the defending champions.

However Liverpool will be confident of turning things around this Sunday owing to their remarkable form as of late. The Reds have taken 23 points from a possible 27 since the beginning of the year much of which has been down to the incredible ‘SAS’ partnership. Both Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have been in impeccable form this season. The duo has a combination of 42 goals in the league and their goal scoring antics have allowed Liverpool to overtake Man City as the league’s top scorers.

Former Everton man Wayne Rooney also acclaimed the two strikers for their commendable performances this season and even likened Uruguayan international Luis Suarez to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

“I think they are both fantastic players and obviously it is good to see Sturridge doing well because he has never really had a chance at his previous clubs,” said the 28 year old.

“Suarez, for me, is up there with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the best players in the world. He has been that good and the two of them together have been in great form this season. We will have to do everything we can to stop them on Sunday.”

The England international also alluded to his partnership with Robin Van Persie and insisted that they could do better together.

“I think we are doing alright," Rooney said."Obviously, we can do better and if we are not at the top of the league then that will get looked at and we understand that.

"Personally, we can score more goals and we know we can. We are working hard to do that, we have to keep going and hopefully that will come.”

David Moyes will have the midweek match against Olympiacos on his mind while making the team selection for the match against Liverpool. The Red Devils suffered a 2-0 loss during the first leg in Greece and will be hoping they can turn the tide in their favour in front of their fans.

David Moyes’ side could be boosted by the potential returns of Rafael (ankle), Javier Hernandez (knee) and Jonny Evans (calf) all of whom are expected to be back in the squad for Sunday’s fixture. Portuguese international Luis Nani has also recovered from his hamstring injury and could feature against Liverpool.

For Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva featured for the under 21s last week and could be in the senior squad for the trip to Manchester, defender Mamadou Sakho is also expected to return having not played a competitive match since late December.
