Paris Saint Germain are poised to secure qualification in the last eight of the Champions League when they welcome Bayer Leverkusen to the Parc des Princes.

Preview: Sami Hyypiä and Leverkusen chase an unlikely miracle

PSG have one foot in the Quarter-Final of the tournament after demolishing Leverkusen 4-0 in the first leg at BayArena.  Yohan Cabaye scored his debut goal for the club on that night, which also saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic score a brace.

The Swede’s double took his tally to ten goals this season in the Champions League and the former Barcelona star is just a goal behind Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo in the scorer’s chart.

The talismanic striker is also the leading goal scorer in Ligue 1 having registered 26 goals so far and is well ahead of his Uruguayan teammate Edinson Cavani who has scored 17 goals in the league in his debut Ligue 1 season.

PSG have been on a good run of form which has helped them in their domestic as well as European affairs. Les Parisiens are unbeaten in their last ten matches in the league and have conceded just six goals in the process. Their antics have put them eight points clear at the top of the table with 10 games still to be played.

Further to this PSG have a strong record at home and the last time the defending French champions suffered a defeat at the Parc des Princes was back in November 2012. The fact that PSG have conceded just five goals in seven European matches this season makes it more of a daunting task for Sami Hyypia and his men.

Leverkusen on the other hand are on a contrasting run of form. The German side are winless in their last four matches and have just won thrice in their last ten. Their disastrous form has allowed Borussia Dortmund to leapfrog them for the second place in the table, Hyypia’s men are now third and trail leaders Bayern Munich by 24 points.

Sami Hyypia who won a Champions League medal during his time as a player with Liverpool has put down his team’s chances of qualifying to the next round. The Finland international was part of the Liverpool side that staged a dramatic comeback and responded from being 3-0 down to win the Champions League cup. But Hyypia has claimed that the chances of his side pulling of a miracle like that are minimal.

"I've never known such comebacks [as the one required to qualify], neither as a coach nor as a player," Hyypia said.

The former Liverpool player instead demanded a better performance from his players both while going forward and defending.

"I will not say we're going to win 4-0 or 5-0, but let's focus on delivering a good performance, both offensively and defensively.

"We will play to win, and aim to play without fear and impose our game. Of course it'll be very hard to win, but our goal is at least to deliver a good performance.

"We won't have any motivation problems: this is a Champions League game and you don't need to motivate your players.”

"We have played three very high-profile matches this season in the competition, two against ManchesterUnited and the home leg versus Paris. Each time, we played with a bit of fear, so we need to approach this match better."

Emre Can will be available for selection after serving suspension but Bayer Leverkusen will be without defender Emir Spahic who received a red card in the first leg. Stefan Reinartz and Omer Toprak both missed the weekend match against Hannover 96 due to suspension but will make their appearance in the European fixture. Midfielder Lars Bender also missed that match because of injury and is a doubt for the trip to Paris.

PSG on the other hand will welcome the likes of Thiago Silva and Blaise Matuidi back to the squad after the duo was rested at the weekend. Edinson Cavani and Christophe Jallet are also back in the squad and are expected to feature during Wednesday’s encounter.

In six of PSG’s last seven Champions League games, there have been over 2.5 goals scored, the French champions are also undefeated in 14 of their last 15 Champions League matches and will be hoping to extend the streak further.
