West Brom will welcome Manchester United to the Hawthorns on Saturday, the 8th of March in a Premier League encounter.

Preview: United looking to respond after extended break

The Red Devils were not involved in Premier League last week, with their fixture against Man City postponed due to the Citizen’s involvement in the Capital One Cup Final which they subsequently won.

Man United will now be looking to take advantage of their extended rest and push closer to a top four finish. Since the dawn of the Premier League back in 1992, under Sir Alex Ferguson United never failed to finish outside the top three.

However for Man United to keep the streak going, it will take a miracle of epic proportions. Not are the Red Devils just 14 points shy of the third spot which is currently occupied by Arsenal, the Red Devils have been extremely inconsistent in the pursuit of their season targets and as things stand a top three finish, in fact a Champions League place itself would be quite a delusional target.

Their inconsistency can be proven by the fact that the Red Devils have won just a single match in their last five outings in all competitions with the victory coming against 16th placed Crystal Palace. United were handed a relatively easy tie in the Champions League but Moyes’ side failed to make any use of it as Olympiakos subjected them to a 2-0 defeat, United’s second in a span of five matches.

Man United’s other defeat in their last five matches, came against Stoke City as Charlie Adam downed the Red Devils with a wonderful goal in the second half. Despite their woeful form the Manchester side managed to gain a point from their match against Arsenal which ended in a 0-0 draw.

Whereas a Champions League finish seems out of the question, United can do well enough to land them a qualification in the Europa League, anything below that will be a crying shame. With Manchester City having won the Capital One Cup and the Citizens likely to qualify for the Champions League next season, it is safe to say that the Club finishing 6th in the Premier League will be able to book their place in Europe’s second tier competition.

The sixth spot is currently occupied by Moyes’ former club Everton who have just a slender three point lead over Man United. Everton are not scheduled to play a Premier League match this weekend owing to their FA Cup commitments, this bodes well for Moyes and Man United who should use this opportunity to leapfrog the Merseyside club for the sixth spot.

The two sides however will meet at the Goodison Park on the 20th of April and that fixture will have a big say on who ultimately manages to clinch a Europa League finish by the end of the season.
West Brom like their counterparts are having a nightmare of a season so far. The Baggies began the new campaign strongly and on the course even recorded an impressive 2-1 victory against United at Old Trafford back in September.

However of the 21 league games Albion have played since then only two have ended in victories, as a result of which former manager Steve Clarke was relieved of his duties.

Pepe Mel was then chosen as the man to help West Brom retain their place in the Premier League, but the Spanish international has struggled so far. A reminiscent of which is the fact that the Baggies are winless in their last five games with two of them resulting in defeats.

Their last Premier League outing was against Fulham, a side rock bottom in the league table. The match ended in a 1-1 draw as Matěj Vydra scored for West Brom late in the match to secure a point for his side.

The same fixture last season yielded 10 goals in a single game as a rampant West Brom side scored thrice in the last ten minutes. The Red Devils had already been crowned the champions of England and were to hand Sir Alex Ferguson a farewell gift as they led 5-2 in the 80th minute. However a comeback inspired by Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku resulted in the match ending all square.

Juan Mata is expected to return to the side after being cup tied for Man United’s Champions League tie against Olympiacos. Javier Hernandez who suffered a knee injury on international duty with Mexico is doubtful for the match. However Chicharito’s absence may not hurt the Red Devils much with the Mexican having made just four Premier League starts this season. Last time the 25 year old started a match for the Red Devils was in the Capital One Cup semi-final against Sunderland, a match in which he scored.

Meanwhile West Brom will not be able to field French striker Nicolas Anelka who is still under club suspension.
