Arena Naţională will play host to an international friendly between Argentina and Romania on Wednesday, the 5th of March 2014.

Preview: Sabella looking to finalize squad for World Cup

Wednesday’s fixture will allow coach Alejandro Sabella to take a final look at all his players before he decides as to who will make the trip to Brazil for the mega event. One player who is expected to not make the squad is Juventus forward Carlos Tevez.

The former Man City striker last featured for La Albiceleste in the 2011 Copa America quarterfinal and has been overlooked for the national team since the arrival of Sabella in August 2011.

The 29 year old expressed his anguish on not being picked for the national team and further declared that he would not watch the World Cup if he fails to make it to the squad.

“I have no problems with the group and I get on great with Messi. I don't losesleep over the World Cup. I don't think I will watch it because it hurts me to seethe national team, it's bad for me,” he said.

“If Sabella hasn't called me up, I'm not going to phone him to find out why he doesn't pick me.”

“Sabella must not be asked to call me up. Let him work in peace because it's not easy for Sabella not to call me. I know there's a lot of pressure especially from fans.”

However with the plethora of attacking talent Sabella has to his expense, Tevez’s absence may not hurt Argentina’s much. Argentina have in their ranks arguably the finest player in the world of football in the form of Lionel Messi.

Apart from the mercurial forward there are other recognized players who can lead the line with aplomb including Man City’s talismanic striker Sergio Aguero who has regained fitness and will be in contention to start against Romania, Gonzalo Higuain is another player who has impressed for the national side after scoring nine goals in the WCQ campaign, one less than Messi.

Whereas the aforementioned trio along with Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria are destined to make it to the final squad, there are still a few players Sabella will have to give another look. Wednesday’s match will be the last game before the 59 year old tactician chooses his final squad and he may want to give a final look to the likes of Catania defender Gino Peruzzi and Getafe's Benfica loanee Lisandro Lopez two players who will be fighting to book their place in Sabella’s squad.

Romania on the other hand despite a spirited display in the WCQ campaign were denied a chance of an appearance in the World Cup after they lost to Greece in the play-off match.

Even though the current Romania squad does possess many world class players, Victor Pițurcă’s men have been quite resilient at home recently, with Romania having lost just once at home in their last eight matches the defeat coming at the hands of Turkey back in September. The players are thus expected to be in a buoyant mood ahead of the tie and will be raring to show the world that they have enough quality in their squad to rub shoulders with the best teams in the world.

All eyes will be on Argentina captain Lionel Messi who has been in breath taking form since returning from injury. The Barcelona man has scored eight goals in his last six matches and will certainly be the biggest threat to the Romanian defence.

Last time the two sides met was almost two decades back when Romania emerged victorious after a five goal thriller during the World Cup 1994 in America.
