A potential new challenge awaits the Black Stars, who have never faced off against the Eastern European side

Preview: Black Stars prepare for upcoming World Cup in a friendly test with unknown opponents

Placed in what has been described as this year's "Group of Death" alongside European heavyweights Germany and Portugal as well as familiar foe United States, Ghana will certainly have a tough task ahead to qualify for the knockout stages in their third World Cup appearance.

Hence, in order to prepare for the eagerly anticipated tournament, the Black Stars will be taking on several European and South American teams over the next few months so as to get a feel of what to expect once in Brazil.

The first opponent for Kwesi Appiah's men, Eastern European nation Montenegro, is a wild card in that the two sides have never met previously in any kind of competitive fixture. Still, despite the host's poor record in their last five matches--with one sole win against minnows Luxembourg--the former Asante Kotoko defender has named a strong squad for Wednesday's clash.

Ligue 1 fans will recognize both Ayew brothers--Jordan and Andre, with the latter being singled out for praise, despite his injury woes whilst playing for Marseille by his coach. "He's a world class player who has strong technical abilities and also great leadership qualities. So he's a very important player for us to have available [at our disposal]", Appiah enthused last month.

Milan midfield duo Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien also have secured their place in the line-up, as has Juventus's Kwadwo Asamoah and Udinese's Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu. The Bundesliga's sole representative is Berlin-born midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng and Asamoah Gyan, who is one goal shy of becoming the Black Stars' all-time leading scorer, also takes his position among the three attackers called up.

As for the hosts, who failed to make it into the 32 teams heading to the World Cup and will have to wait until the fall to kick-start their EURO 2016 qualifying campaign, they will be without top scorer and captain Mirko Vucinic as the Bianconeri attacker is currently sidelined with injury.

Naturally, given the strength of their opposition, the Balkan side's head coach, Branko Brnovic has been full of praise and respect for the Black Stars. It's also important to note that Montenegro has only featured as an independent nation in internatonal fixtures for just seven years as they were previously united with Serbia.

And whilst a vast majority of their players--save for the aforementioned Vucinic and Manchester City's Stevan Jovetic--may not be as well known to non-Montenegrins, the team known as Hrabri sokoli (The Brave Falcons) will certainly be keen to put on a good showing in front of their hometown fans.
