The two nations who have already qualified for the World Cup to be held in Brazil this year will battle it out in an international friendly at The Den, home of London based club Millawall.

Australia vs EcuadorPreview: Socceroos to take field without captain Lucas Neill

Despite of signing a short term contract with English side Watford, the 34 year old has failed to make it to Ange Postecoglou’s 23 man squad to face Ecuador. The former Everton man had been without a club after Japanese side Omiya Ardija refused to offer him a contract extension, with incoming manager Ange Postecoglou making his intentions of only including players who feature regularly for their clubs loud and clear.

Apart from the veteran who was axed from the squad, there were some surprise inclusions with all of Curtis Good (Dundee United), Chris Herd (Aston Villa), Massimo Luongo (Swindon Town) and Ben Halloran (Fortuna Dusseldorf) in contention to make their international debuts.

Even though the 48 year olds team selection left quite a few people shocked, the Australian international alluded to his team selection as being the first step into building a very strong side.

"The squad to face Ecuador represents the first steps in what I believe is the building of the next golden generation for Australian football acknowledging there is a need to balance experimentation and experience to achieve this," Postecoglou said.

"The Ecuador match gives this group of players an opportunity to stake a claim for the World Cup. They have been rewarded for playing consistent and strong football and shows that age and limited internationalexperience are not barriers to opportunity.”

Postecoglou also had words of encouragement for players not selected for the trip to London and claimed that there are quite a few players on his radar who still stand a chance of making it to the World Cup squad.

"Selection in the final squad for the World Cup is still very much an open door," Postecoglou said.

"There were quite a few players, particularly those in Asia whose leagues are just beginning, who are still very much on the radar.”

Ange Postecoglou was handed the responsibility of guiding Australia to only their fourth World Cup campaign after former head coach Holger Osieck was relieved of his duties after suffering consecutive 6-0 defeats at the hands of Brazil and France.

Australia have made a positive start under their new manager who in his first match in charge of the national side guided the Socceroos to a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica courtesy of a solitary goal from Tim Cahill. The former Everton man is poised to start upfront for Australia but will face competition from Mathew Leckie for a place in the starting eleven.

21 year old Tom Rogic is an exciting prospect and should get a run in the first team as well. The youngster who is on loan from Celtic has started to feature more often at Melbourne Victory and maybe rewarded for his fine form with a starting berth.

Matt McKay, Mile Jedinak and Mark Milligan who have regularly featured for the national side in recent times must be vigilant of younger players who are eyeing their spots. All of Luongo, James Holland and Oliver Bozanic are competent players and will be fancying their chances of featuring more often for Australia.

Their counterparts Ecuador on the other hand have won just a single of their last five matches when La Tri  pulled off an upset in the WCQ campaign defeating Uruguay 1-0. Both of their last two outings against Honduras and Argentina resulted in draws and Ecuador will surely be fancying their chances against the Socceroos.

Ecuador will largely depend on their captain Antonio Valencia who is one of the most recognisable names in Reinaldo Rueda’s squad. The Manchester United winger is one of the three European based players in Ecuador’s 20 man team. Also part of the squad is former Basel and Man City forward Felipe Caicedo who is expected to lead the line for Reinaldo Rueda’s side.
