Borussia Dortmund perhaps played Hamburger SV at the worst time. HSV was in a rut, having forgotten how to win matches. However, Bert Van Marwijk was sacked and Mirko Slomka was appointed. Slomka is the third coach of HSV this season. He previously oversaw Hannover 96's rise from relegation battlers to top six contenders. He was also in charge of Schalke when they made their run to the Champions League quarterfinals in 2008.

Hakan Calhanoglu was picked up by HSV in 2012. In Slomka's first match in charge, HSV beat BVB, 3-0. Calhanoglu scored a wonder goal:
